My husband and I enjoyed visiting this museum. The Museum Director greeted us warmly and was very welcoming. The young lady working at the front desk was friendly. The museum does not charge admission so that it is accessible to all. They used to charge admission for the special exhibits but no longer do that. We enjoyed seeing the very detailed ink drawings from an Italian artist in the 18th century. The scientific instruments were very interesting. There was a good collection of ancient Roman artifacts also. This small museum is well worth a visit!

This museum is the kind of small, intimate art museum I like to go to. On exhibition now is the work of Jacob Hashimoto, and we enjoyed this exhibition the best. Although the rest of the museum is very interesting as well. We spent about an hour. Staff was very friendly and they have a very small gift shop, but with some interesting wares for purchase.

Oxford, Mississippi, home of the University of Mississippi or Ole Miss, is one of our favorite destinations to visit when we travel south to Natchez and Vicksburg and the Great River Road in Louisiana. But the last time we visited Oxford, during the pandemic, the University of Mississippi Museum was closed. We were able to tour the campus and Oxford Square but the museum and William Faulkner's Rowan Oak home were closed. One thing about the museum that has always puzzled me: why isn't there any reference to the 1962 riots on the Ole Miss campus? Since then, a statue has been erected between the Lyceum and the Williams Library. But no reference in the museum.

When my wife and I visited the University of Mississippi campus in 1992, we were astonished to discover that there wasn't a single reference to James Meredith anywhere on the campus, not at the Lyceum or University Circle where the violent Old Miss riot of 1962 occurred in the wake of Meredith's enrollment as the university's first African-American student and not at the University of Mississippi Museum. Even today, as we stroll the campus, there is only one reference. The Civil Rights Monument, a statue of Meredith, was unveiled in 2006 behind the Lyceum next to the University Library. Meanwhile, the University of Mississippi Museum, which was established as an art museum in 1939, remains an interesting place to visit with its collections of southern folk art, Greek and Roman antiquities, 19th century scientific instruments, American fine art, Marty Skipwith Buie's personal art collection, correspondence relating to the American Revolutionary War by George Washington, John Hancock and John Adams and the paintings of such American Modernists as Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, John Marin and Marsden Hartley. The museum also owns Rowan Oak, home of Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize winning author William Faulkner, which can be reached by walking from the museum through adjacent Bailey's Woods.

The museum, although small, has some wonderful exhibits.Pottery found in Greece from the BC time frame. Nice artwork and mathematical instruments were among the exhibits I saw this week. Last year when I visited they had art work from the local artist Kate Freeman Clark, which was wonderful. This is definitely worth the visit!

My wife and I visited on a Saturday morning when things were relatively quiet. The back of the museum is bordered by the forested acreage of the Faulkner estate (it is possible to walk from one attraction to the other through these woods).
The museum has a great collection of Roman and Greek antiquities which are some of the most remarkable I have ever seen. There are vases and busts which are magnificent. Some are in need of restoration, and a project is underway to do just that.
As far as artwork is concerned, on display is a wonderful collection by Randy Hayes who paints directly on grids of photographs. His career has taken him from Mississippi to Seattle and back, and his work is absolutely awesome. You will not believe how unique his work truly is. Don't miss this fabulous collection.
The campus museum is an unexpected gem. Please check it out.

Looking for a perfect way to soak in local culture in an easily accessible location between The Square and so close to campus? This is one of those!
There is free parking. The museum is historic and has a walking path called Bailey Wood's adjacent to this lot. This path winds through shaded trees to Rowan Oak.
You can spend 40 minutes or 3 hours here - it only depends on what you decide to do. Rain or shine, cold or hot, the museum itself is a great destination.
The collection has amazing works and displays. This summer we were delighted to see the installation for Kate Freeman Clark. Her work of 1000 paintings is now housed in Holly Springs, MS. The story of this artist is revealed in this elegant exhibit.
The entrance is from just off the parking lot. The view facing the street is part of the lobby. Knowledgeable volunteers are there to help with questions.
Highly recommend this experience while you are in Oxford!

In the area recently and stopped here after touring William Faulkner's Rowan Oak. Enjoyed the exhibits as well as the cordial, very friendly staff. I also got to peek in on classes with youngsters creating art. As a retired teacher I loved it. Great place to spend 45-60 minutes. Leave a donation as admission is free. Wish there were more offerings in the gift shop.

Worth a visit, 30 mins. Mainly ancient Greek artifacts and a local painter. Highlight was a Corinthian oil lamp from 100 A.D.

We were expecting to see displays/info on the history of the University but found that that was not the case. They at the time had displays of a contributor to the university. Still interesting enough. Staff was very friendly & informative.

Do you have a collection music related items or is there another museum in Oxford that i'm thinking of?

You are probably thinking of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture which is located on the Ole Miss Campus.
