‪All you need to know about Port Gibson, Mississippi, is that General Ulysses S. Grant said the town was too beautiful to burn. Grant made that statement in 1863, when his Union Army was en route to besieging Vicksburg in one of the key battles of the Civil War. Port Gibson hasn't changed much since then. It remains a tourist's delight...historic buildings, beautiful homes, lovely gardens. Founded by French colonists in 1729, it was chartered as a town in 1803 after the United States acquired the territory in the Louisiana Purchase from France. Today, it has a population of 1,567 and is Mississippi's third oldest settlement. There is as much history here as there is beauty. The antebellum homes along Route 61 with their beautiful gardens are a popular tourist attraction. So is the First Presbyterian Church with its magnificent steeple. Nearby, visitors will want to see Windsor Ruins, Magnolia Church, Claiborne County Courthouse, the Grand Gulf Military Park, the ghost town of Rodney, the Natchez Trace Parkway and Gemiluth Chessed synagogue, which was built in 1892 and is the oldest Jewish synagogue and the only Moorish Revival building in the state. Port Gibson is the first stop on the route that General Ulysses S. Grant took in his 1863 campaign to capture Vicksburg. Several skirmishes between Union and Confederate troops took place in and around Port Gibson.‬

‪Port Gibson, MS. is a small town that played a part in the Civil War. Close to Port Gibson is Grand Gulf military park. There the Union defeated the confederates which led to the eventual fall of Vicksburg. Port Gibson has a nice little downtown area and town square which features the Claiborne County courthouse. When we visited there was not much going on and it looked like some of the businesses were not open. Not many restaurants to choose from. We did hear about 61 Fish House, but it was pickup only. We walked around briefly and then continued our trip along the Natchez Trace Parkway.‬

‪The town of Port Gibson is quite small but it is part of the great Mississippi River Road Drive, and it has the novelty of the First Presbyterian Church with its well-known steeple. The nearby Grand Gulf Military Park was closed during our trip because of flooding in the entire Mississippi River system and heavy rains during the spring of 2019. Windsor Ruins could not be accessed via Rodney Road, also because of flooding, but it was accessible via Highway 552. Don't skip this charming town just because it's small. Do check your gas guage and do plan for unique dining experiences. ‬

‪Drive through here often on the way from New Orleans to Natchez. It is a really pretty town with lovely old buildings and homes with lovely gardens but no fences.‬

‪I would go there again for a visit for they are very accommodating to people who want to find records of their family. The building was of special importance to me because my husbands great great grandfather was the probate judge of Port Gibson Mississippi. In 1860- till the time of his death. ‬

‪Beautiful testimony to God. This golden hand points to the sky. It is a wonderful display of the one of the many historical facts in this city that was to beautiful to burn.‬

Serve altro..? ‬

‪See the Windsor Ruins and the Port Gibson Military Park. An afternoon of interesting stuff to do for only $4!

Port Gibson Military Park has many outbuildings and interesting artifacts. Climb the observation tower, the view is worth it!

Then drive out to Windsor ruins. It’s a sight to behold!‬

‪If in the area, stop by and spend some time exploring this charming little town. Port Gibson played a huge roll in the Vicksburg Campaign itself and Grant said the town was “to beautiful to burn.” Enjoy stopping at some local shoes and have lunch at any of the cafes - you won’t be disappointed. ‬
