This place was such a lovely find. I am a disabled lady using a mobilty scooter and we had our dog with us.
It was a cold day so we wrapped up warm and left the carpark and headed towards the hides. Everything was very accessible with a lower window in the hides which was great and even space to turn my scooter around. We only went as far as the last hide as it was getting cold and starting to rain so we decided to head back to the cafe for a hot drink and something to eat. We got back to the car park and found sign posts to the cafe. It was quite a hilly path but I manged to get my scooter up there. We got to the top and saw what would have been beautiful views but it started to pour down. The cafe looked lovely, warm and inviting so when got to the entrance and saw the NO DOGS inside sign we were rather annoyed. This place is geared up for people with dogs and its a wildlife reserve so why don't you cater for people with dogs. In this day and age with more and more restaurant's offering dog friendly sections why can't they ? A sign in the car park saying the restaurant isn't dog friendly might have been nice otherwise. Needless to say we turned around and found a dog friendly place for lunch! Such a shame!

I always look carefully for accessibility for my all terrain wheelchair with power attachment before I go somewhere. Usually a visitor attraction gives more information than 'accessible trails' on its website but this place did not. I expected interpretation boards and maps in the main car park to identify the wheelchair accessible trails but there were none. I parked at the visitor centre in the disabled spaces of which there three or four - inadequate especially given that there appeared to be space given to staff parking instead. I didn't fancy the visitor centre, it looked uninviting from the car park and required large doors and lifts to be navigated and I was on my own at that point. I got good information from other walkers about the paths. And later my sister bought a paper map at the visitor centre. Which still did not identify accessible trails. We went by walkers advice and completed the red path. Which was tremendously difficult for me, in a few tiny places which with a bit of thought could have mainly been adapted to be no problem at all. (See picture of huge step up which with a few planks would have sorted it) During my twin centre holiday in Wales I had great difficulty finding any walks to do with my children in my wheelchair. Most were measured in yards when I need miles! This site with a little investment could be a beacon of accessibility and getting into unspoiled nature. As it was I needed assistance from my family to get off my wheelchair for obstructions and several dangerous boardwalks. The only part of the walk which would be difficult to make accessible was the wooded steep section five minutes before getting to the tarmac path. A turning point could have been put there, to follow the path back, if adjoining landowners couldn't allow a wheelchair deviation. I'll attach some photos and the map which appears randomly on the tarmac path towards cardigan. That tarmac path is on the map, running between the car park and cardigan and is completely accessible.

We visited this wildlife centre for 3 hours during our holiday and we’re left wondering if we had perhaps missed something! The signage all around the site was poor and we still don’t know exactly what there was to look at. We started off walking down a paved track through reed beds and visited a number of beautifully constructed bird hides but saw little more than a handful of ducks in the 4 we entered. The track seemed to come to an end near a bridge so we turned around and headed back towards the car park to see if we could at least find the visitor centre. This was a very nice large glass building that seemed to be little more than a shop and a cafe. We ventured upstairs and discovered an exit to a grassy area with nice views and so stopped for our lunch before strolling down a path that was not very well signposted. This lead to the river where there is kayaking and canoeing that looked fun but the steep and treacherous path next to the river did not have any signposts indicating distances and many of the steps were in a state of disrepair. The wood on many of the steps had rotted away leaving dangerous metal stumps that would normally hold the wood in place. We passed two other couples who were of a similar view that the Gorge path was not well maintained and potentially dangerous. Despite being fairly fit and agile we turned around to head back to the visitor centre in the hope we’d missed something. This appeared to be just a childrens’ play area that to be fair looked pretty well kept and fun. If you just want a coffee or ice cream and a short stroll to the river then this is for you. If you actually want to see some wildlife then you may just be disappointed and feel the £4 for the car park was somewhat excessive.

We'd read very mixed reviews before visiting so weren't expecting much, and we got what we expected. Visitor centre (and toilets) closed - surprised at this in the height of summer season, but the website does say opening days if you look closely (we hadn't). Other buildings looking a bit unloved. Nice walk into Cardigan and back, visiting hides which were in good condition. We enjoyed seeing curlews - a first for us. The boardwalk section has clearly had an upgrade as was almost all new. Shame we couldn't enjoy the cafe or shop - but Cardigan businesses got our money instead.

Very disappointing . Trails were poorly marked and lots were overgrown . Toilet facilities only available weds - sat when cafe and shop open . Crazy if you’re letting people pay £4 to park just to walk . Have had many happy family times here but now it’s unkempt and dirty . Can see more wildlife in my garden than here . Will not come back .

Not dog friendly, not solo traveller friendly either. I arrived and walked around looking for some sort of map or signposts and found one that had one way for the visitor centre and the other way for a walk. The one I walked along brought me to a body of water where I spoke to several people advising me not to follow the trail with a dog. So went a short way to a dead end turned round and went to the visitor centre . Dogs not allowed in, theres nowhere to tie them up and I probably wouldn't do that anyway. So I left. The bits I saw were run down and felt like walking through a wood on the edge of a bad council estate.

Huge site with different way marked trails and shop and cafe which was much bigger than expected. We did the gorge trail, hard work but we had it to ourselves!

Parking is £4 for the day but the machines weren't working at all so to pay you had to walk to the visitor centre which we doubt many people did.
There is an accessible walk going past the visitor centre and cafe although we didn't do this one. We did the longer red walk which was generally well surfaced with sections of boardwalk which were quite new and other parts in a worse state of repair.
The reserve is dog friendly on the lead although there is a lack of poo bins.
The hides are well kept but generally close to the path so not too quiet. A board identifying reported sightings is in the visitor centre.

We enjoyed a walk here today following the red route which is very mixed in terms of accessibility. The boardwalks are broken in places. Hides are good. Carpark isn’t huge but we had a nice time and would definitely come back.

Hi there I'm on holiday in the area in 2 weeks and just wondered if I could visit your centre with a well behaved Springer.
Where can the dog go or not go?
Many thanks in advance

Dogs are welcome around the centre on a lead, there is seating outside if you want to stop and eat. I don't think dogs are allowed inside the cafe or shop unfortunately, hopefully that will change in the future.

Is there disabled access to the restaurant please? (ie, without stairs)

Hi Christine, there is disabled access to the cafe. There's a disabled carpark next to the centre and then a lift up to the top floor.

Thinking of visiting with my parents in a couple of weeks. What would be a typical length of visit and how long are the trails?
Thanks in advance for your response.

When I visited, we was there for about 4-5 hours, we enjoyed coffee and lunch in the cafe though. We only did 3 of the trails as ran out of time. Would definitely recommend a visit though. It's lovely.

Hi Sally M,
Thank you for your comments. The Welsh Wildlife Centre & the Wildlife Trust are fully committed to maintaining & providing a high level of customer service across our catering establishments. We are fully compliant with current food labelling & allergen information provision in line with European legislation introduced in December 2014.
We cater for a wide variety of dietary requirements very successfully on a daily basis & our customers have a great deal of faith in the information that we provide to them this enables them to make informed decisions about what they choose to eat.
There is a prominently displayed notice on the counter at the order point asking visitors who have dietary needs or allergies to ask at the time of ordering for more information. We have a comprehensive allergy information file available to view that states the inclusion of any of the fourteen major allergens in our dishes. For any dish not contained in the file the information is available orally, again in full accordance with the 2014 legislation.
We know from the very many customers who use our Café who have dietary requirements & specific food allergies that the approach that we take works & does give them the confidence to eat in our Café at The Welsh Wildlife Centre.
I hope that clarifies our practices within The Welsh Wildlife Centre and we hope to welcome you again soon.

Are dogs allowed?

Hi Robyn, Thank you for your enquiry. Dogs are allowed on the reserve but should be kept on a lead please. Dogs are not allowed within the Visitor Centre, however we do have covered outdoor spaces adjacent to the café where you can sit with a dog and eat or drink.
