‪As a child growing up in Douglas we tended to simply take this statue for granted as simply a part of the village structure, and it is only many years later and as a visiting adult that I can really appreciate it from a artistic point of view. This larger than life structure really is a most impressive structure and is situated in a lovely location overlooking the river and the countryside beyond.

Whereas we didn’t appreciate such artistic merit as children, we were however well aware of the historic significance of the statue, having been taught by our teachers of the important part that Douglas had played in the Covenanter movement and the founding of the Cameroonian regiment. Indeed, every year a religious “conventicle” would be held at the statue to commemorate those previously illegal religious meetings, and the Cameronian regiment would post sentries on the surrounding hills during the service to replicate that historic necessity.‬

‪This monument stands in tribute to James, Earl of Angus and son of James Douglas, the 2nd Marquess of Douglas. His main notability was to fight on the side of William of Orange in opposition to the Jacobite cause and secondly for raising the Cameronians Regiment, which existed for over 200 years in the British Army until it was disbanded in the 1960s.

This monument was raised in 1888 to mark the 200 year anniversary of the raising of the regiment. The monument features a larger than life statue of James, surmounted on a pedestal. The statue depicts Tricorne as a young man in military attire of the 17th century and wearing a tricorne. His right arm is raised as if presenting the Cameronians, while his left is holding his sword held in its scabbard. The sculpture is an incredible cast bronze work with fine detail on the Earl's uniform and face.‬
