‪On walking around the village we discovered that although the church was closed - a key could be obtained from a keyholder in the village. We spent nearly 20 fascinating minutes in the small church (or what remained of it). We particularly liked the quality of the marble.

‪A really lovely building which although a church in former years is now a mausoleum for the Douglas family . Beautiful clock tower and interesting grounds. One of a few hidden treasures in this wonderful little village.‬

‪We had quite a job to find this church because it is not well signed. It looks an interesting, historic place which we would have liked to see inside but unfortunately the door was locked.‬

‪This is a hidden gem only five minutes from the motorway. The church itself is kept locked, but on the day I visited the key was behind the bar at the pub (note though that I spent ten minutes wrestling with the key in the lock before realising you insert the key upside down). The interior was fascinating and very atmospheric. No pictures will really do it justice, it’s small and dark so difficult to capture really, but it is something to behold. The carving on the effigies is amazing. I probably could have used a little more information about some of the artefacts though. Well worth a slight detour though if you have time.‬

‪Visit St Bride's today having, I am ashamed to say, only recently become aware of its existance. It is the final resting place Sir James Douglas known as Good Sir James or The black Douglas depending on which side of the border you lived on. Impressive clock tower said to have the oldest working clock in Scotland. Lovely little church yard. Beautiful little church with gorgeous stained windows. Well worth a visit. Have to phone in advance to arrange to pick up keys from a nearby house, the key holder also provides a leaflet with information re the history of the church‬

‪Key is available from an adjacent house. Church has the ruins of one aisle, into which was set a clock tower - the oldest working clock in Scotland. The key gives access to the chancel where there are monuments to the Douglas family, and other interesting stones. The key-holder gives you an interesting leaflet describing what you see, and there are notices too. All set in a very well kept churchyard.‬

‪Beautiful old church and graveyard that you can walk around. The bell tower contains a clock donated by Mary Queen of Scots - it is thought to be the oldest working church clock in Scotland. Also took in the statue of the Earl of Angus which commemorates the founding of the Cameronian regiment.‬

‪The Douglas family are central to the history of the area and the remains of the original church have been very well consolidated and restored. We gained access via the near by museum staff and were treated to an expert tour with details of the various tombs and the life stories of the members of the Douglas family - Archibald the Grim, Archibald Bell the Cat, the Good Sir James and so on. The Cameronian Regiment connection is central to the site and the high standard of maintenance is impressive. An excellent guide to the history of the church is sold by the museum. The church is no longer used for regular religious observance.‬

‪Great to be there, and I had an excellent 'guide' round from a local history enthusiast. Also, the nearby museum is very well presented.‬
