If you go to the arch, this is a free museum that highlights the history of westward expansions so it's worth a visit, although it's not very interactive. You will be doing a lot of reading.
It's definitely worth a visit to learn the history of the arch, and why it was built which was surprising.

A Midlife Adventure

I came here whilst driving Route 66 in order to find out more about the great drive west to find a better life which began with the pioneers of the 1800’s and I wasn’t disappointed.
The museum is set up in chronological order so not too hard to follow although initially I didn’t realise that section two was opposite section one and not a continuation of it!
I felt the way in which the history was told was really informative, at times interactive even for a midlife adventurer and I learnt a great deal. The information about the original mapping of the area west of St Louis by Lewis and Clark right through to the settlers who ventured out into the unknown was enthralling.
Being from the UK and not perhaps as familiar with this history I also learnt that the Western movies I had watched as a child and loved were in fact grossly over dramatised. This was quite a shock to be honest but led me to purchase a couple of books from the shop to further my research/ education.

We visited the Gateway Arch Museum and overall found it to be very engaging and informative. It's obviously a newer museum; all of the displays are in great condition and working order. I liked the inclusion of many sculptures for the visually impaired and a cafe that was reasonably priced with tasty food.
What I did not like was the obvious push to highlight individuals BECAUSE they were women or minorities. I could envision the committee that planned the museum saying "Whatever you do, minimize the inclusion of white males." To me, the purpose of the museum should be to educate the public on the facts of Westward Expansion, including the most important people, regardless of their sex or nationality.

This museum is accessible for all ages - it has plenty to keep kids engaged yet enough detail to engage the adult mind. It’s a great way to spend some time before or after the tram ride to the top of the arch.

The museum is laid out well and flows nicely. There are a lot of artifacts from the times high helps to bring the past to life.

That is a good museum to visit and it's tells the history of it and it's very interesting and very informative.

Confusingly called something else when we were on site so couldn’t find it to begin with. It’s downstairs through the Gateway Arch entrance.
The museum is brilliantly done.
The initial focus is on St Louis but broadens out to include many other places we’ve visited such as Cody, Salt Lake City, The Oregon Trail, etc.
There are many well thought out interactive areas, leading up to how the Gateway Arch was conceived and built.
The film of this was actually scary – don’t think they had Health & Safety rules back then.
The museum is brilliantly done.

The NPS has done a great job of using one of its newest National Parks to tell its story in a museum. In most parks, museums are a small part yet here it is one of the main attractions. The combination of historic artifacts, miniature recreations and artistic displays tells the story of St. Louis and its importance in Westward Expansion. It is a really good museum that you can enjoy either before or after you go up the Arch.

The Museum of Westward Expansion is located entirely underground, beneath the Gateway Arch. This was my second visit to the museum, which has been completely redone since my last trip. There is not a large entryway beneath the Arch, which brings visitors to a huge map set in the floor.
As the name implies, the museum focuses largely on the history of westward expansion. However, it also features some of the history of St Louis as well as the story of the Arch itself. If visiting the Arch, it's definitely worth taking the time to explore the musuem.

The museum area was larger than I expected. Lots of history and exhibits. I am interested but not a “history buff”. This would be a must see for a history buff! And a good stop for the cost conscious traveler as the museum portion is free.

On the Landing across from the Arch. Also in the Hyatt Hotel underground parking garage on the Eastern side of the Arch grounds. Both parking areas are public and pay-to-park and approximately $6.
