Really gorgeous cemetery. You have to drive through a less than ideal part of town to get to there but once inside it is completely safe and a different world. There is a ton of history and the cemetery website can help you find graves.

This is a spectacular walk through history, visiting the graves of such amazing people associated with St. Louis such as William Clark (explorer of the Louisiana Purchase), Adolphus Busch (founder of Anheuser Busch), and Susan Blow (Mother of Kindergarten) to name a few. The cemetery is immaculately taken care of. It is a safe place to walk around and spend some time with the people who helped to make our city and country what it is today. You can drive to different locations within the cemetery, park your car and look around at the gravesites of so many famous people. Maps are available to help with your search.

When I booked tickets for my friend and I for the event Sips, Souls & Strolls: Architecture and Architects, I had no idea what a treat we'd be in for! The event was well organized, with knowledgeable volunteer guides, friendly attendees, and lots of historical information. Despite the tour focus being on famous architects and architecture, we passed by other famous mausoleums such as numerous Anheuser and Busch structures, as well as the famous Lemp family. The beverages and snacks available were not the focal point, so if you go hungry, you'll probably leave hungry (at least for this event), but strolling amongst the beauty of the place was truly the highlight. The cemetery is huge (314 acres with 14 miles of road), so if you're getting an Uber pick up/drop off, be very specific with directions and tip well! It's very easy to get lost there. Another fun is that the cemetery is actually also a Level II arboretum, with efforts at flora conservation and species diversification of trees and plants. It provides habitat for small mammals and lots of birds, so it's a fauna haven as well. Whether you go on a self-guided tour (map highly recommended) or an event, you won't be disappointed!

This is a beautiful cemetery providing peace and tranquility - it’s also the final resting place for several historical figures including William Clark (William & Clark exploration) and Rush Limbaugh
It’s a must visit in St. Louis for all those who love history

Bellefontaine is a cemetery that glows with care. Staff maintain beautiful grounds, and share wonderful stories of the inhabitants and architecture.
I went with a bus tour. Our guide was funny and knowledgeable.

We enjoyed the Mausoleum II tour tremendously. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we learned about the cemetery, it’s grounds, the architecture, as well as the history of St Louis and several of those interred here.
The grounds were designed to be park-like with an attempt to reflect the Paradise of the after life. There are winding roads, hills, ponds, trees and numerous gardens of native plants - all of which attract a large number of wildlife. In fact, of the 314 acres, 100 acres are held as undeveloped land.
The cemetery has been in common use since 1849 and is the resting place of numerous well-known figures from St. Louis’ past. We viewed the Busch family mausoleum, and we’re able to go inside the Wainwright and Lemp - both beer barons - mausoleums. When the guide found out I’m interesting in cemetery/graveyard geography and history, he let Keith and I ride with him on the golf cart (everyone else drove their personal vehicles) and we got a more in-depth tour. After the tour, we went to see obelisk marking Gen. William Clark’s underground mausoleum.
I highly recommend a guided tour or self-guided (maps are available at the entrance) for anyone interested in St Louis history, architecture, cemeteries, or just wanted to spend time in a beautiful park

Over 170 years of history is located in this beautiful cemetery, which is more like an arboretum. Many famous and historic graves - some with mausoleums and others with beautiful headstones and statues. Get the map in the box near the office and follow along.

My husband and I spent a perfectly LOVELY afternoon in Bellefontaine Cemetery recently; in all our visits to St Louis, we'd never been there. I'm so glad we finally made the time to see it!
The cemetery is impeccably cared for. Brian is one of the groundskeepers, and was immensely helpful to us during our visit. He guided us to a few sites that weren't specifically listed on the map, and was very friendly and welcoming. Many thanks to Brian for his guidance, his hospitality, and for opening the waiting room so that we could use the facilities there.
It's really a beautiful cemetery. The map does a nice job of leading you through the grounds, pointing out all the most interesting gravesites (e.g., The Girl in the Shadow Box, the Lemp family tomb, William Clark's grave). One of the loveliest areas is the Wildwood Valley, with two lakes joined by a stream lined with gorgeous wildflowers. At the top of the farthest lake is a lovely outdoor chapel with a lion sculpture. Simply gorgeous view!
The cemetery has multiple paths, so a map is absolutely necessary. But it's easy to drive, and you can pause along the way at multiple points to admire the lovely funereal sculptures of a time gone by.
If you have a couple of hours to spare while you're in St Louis, Bellefontaine Cemetery is definitely worth your time. Enjoy your visit!

Add Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis to my bucket list of the most significant cemeteries in the United States...along with Arlington, Hollywood and Graceland. Founded in 1849, it contains 314 acres of beautiful landscape, over 87,000 graves and a number of architecturally significant monuments and mausoleums such as the Louis Sullivan designed Wainwright Tomb, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 4947 West Florissant Avenue, the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. It contains over 14 miles of paved roads and, as an accredited arboretum, is home to over 180 species of trees and shrubs. A new lakeside garden and columbarium were completed in 2010. Aside from the Wainwright Tomb, which was built in 1892, other notable mausoleums in the cemetery are the Busch Mausoleum, designed for brewing magnate Adolphus Busch in 1915, the Brown Brothers Mausoleum and the Paramore Mausoleum. Many of the wealthiest families of St. Louis society are interred in ornate mausoleums which overlook the Mississippi River and draw from Classical, Romanesque, Gothic and Egyptian architectural styles. Other noteworthy burials in Bellefontaine are prominent U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, who championed western expansion and the Homestead Act; William Clark of Lewis & Clark fame; William Seward Burroughs, inventor and founder of Burroughs Corporation; James Eads, an engineer who constructed bridges, railroads and ironclad warships.; Stephen W. Kearny, a U.S. Army officer who played a significant role in the Mexican -American War and the conquest of California; Rush Limbaugh, popular radio talk show host and Medal of Freedom recipient; James Smith McDonnell, founder of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation; Civil War general John Pope; many Union and Confederate generals from the Civil War; 10 governors; members of several notable brewing families, including the Buschs, Anheusers, Lemps and Griesediecks; many prominent pioneers of the West and significant politicians and businessmen. Visitors can obtain self-guided tour brochures that indicate the location of notable burials and mausoleums at the cemetery office.

While in town for a visit, we placed the cemetery on our things to see list and were not disappointed. Had the opportunity to visit the gravesites of many who helped shape our country. Among the gravesites was William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame), Confederate General Sterling Price (I'm a Civil War buff, Price played a significant role during the war in my home state of Arkansas). I also visited the gravesite of Rush Limbaugh which took a bit of effort as he is not yet listed on the maps the cemetery provided. A phone call to their office and the staff was very helpful in locating Limbaugh's gave. And a word about the staff - very professional and helpful. We would recommend including this tour on your list of things to do when visiting St Louis.

Not sure what you’re asking...there are special tours, but we just used a pamphlet provided and did a self guided tour.
