Short hike out to the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Great views of both rivers! Sat and enjoyed the views and the nice breeze.

I went to this park today and it was closed due to flooding. I tried once before last year and it was also closed. It looks like it's at the end of a long dirt road right next to the river, so it's probably closed more than it's open. I'll have to try to find the status on a website before I try again.

Unfortunately, the Jones Confluence Point state park is closed. The closure was not clear to me from the Missouri State Parks web page. However, it was one the first items in RED LETTERS. The Missouri State parks did promptly reply to my email complaint and pointed to the closure notification. If you intend to visit Missouri state park check for closures.

60% of all the fresh water in the US flows here at the mouth of the Missouri River. The drive to the park is a long and rocky one, but with great chances of seeing wildlife. Be careful of other drivers coming at you. Once you're at the park it's just a short walk to the confluence. If the river is low, you can see the compass and markers etched in the concrete. The top of the flag pole is the highest the rivers have ever reached (in 1993). Across the river, into Illinois, you can see the Lewis and Clark tower (random operating hours, I suggest visiting the Lewis and Clark Historic site first or calling the city of Hartford to schedule a tour up to the top). Across on the other side into St. Louis County you can see Columbia Bottoms Conservation Area. The lookout at Columbia Bottoms is not as interesting as being able to walk into the rivers, but the state has poured good money into creating a fantastic conservation area and walking trail.

On an usually warm day in January, I thought it would be fun to get a bit of a walk in and visit the Confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. NOTE: while this is a state park, it is located in the middle of a bunch of farm land that is prone to flooding. It is probably best to visit during a dryer time of year as after you get off the main highway it is mainly dirt roads that take you out to the park. We had a few nervous moments where we were concerned of getting stuck in the muddy ruts in the road. Thankfully we did safely make it. The parking area was also a muddy mess, but a good portion of the quarter mile walk to the confluence is paved. It was really neat to visit the confluence, but extremely cold when we did. Even though the day was warm, being that near to two rivers made it very chilly. What was really neat though was seeing the large ice chunks floating down the river. Totally worth it!

You really have to want to get to the confluence, because it is quite a drive from town and then 4.7 miles of dirt roads and a .25 mile walk to the confluence point. But once you get there, you can say that you were at a historic spot.

Our visit to the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers was done on a nice day in March, for out-of-town visitors. The park was above water, so the walkways were navigable despite being covered with dry mud. We did have to drive for a distance off of a paved road to get to the parking area and then walk quite a distance to the interpretive signs and photo point.
It is on the way from St. Louis to Alton, IL, where we decided to stop for lunch in a craft brewery/cafe called The Bakery Brewery. I would not recommend going to the confluence as a destination in itself.

Very nice day trip, lunch in Alton, sat in Robert Wadlow's chair and down to see the Melvin Price Lock and Lewis and Clark park. Kids had a great time. The Confluence is nice, don't expect a lot. The area is subjected to frequent, heavy floods so it can't really be developed, I kind of like it better that way, a bit wild (check the river height before making the trip, especially in the spring).

We are working our way through the Missouri State Park Passport Challenge by visiting 88 state parks and a few historic sites by the end of October 2017.
So today we drove to the Confluence Park in West Alton. We stopped at the Audubon Bird Museum which I had no idea existed. It's a lovey facility with vast views of the river. Lots of telescopes and seating-- both in and outdoors. A small museum with books and other things to buy. We were able to have them stamp our books.
Then we continued down the gravel road for many more miles. Car is very dirty and requires a major wash. Anyway, we finally arrived and walked a path to the confluence where the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers converge --quite a neat site to see; however, the area is not key well-- trash and junk litter the waters. Signs had been stolen and others vandalized. Sad little area considering it's significance.
I'm glad we went because I always wanted to see this.

The park consists of a large designated Park area but the only facilities are at the end of the road. There is a quarter mile flat easy trail to the actual Confluence Point itself which has a number of informative signs and details. At the end of the road, where the parking is, is a picnic shelter and men's and women's outhouses and again some small displays which are very nice. The outhouses are clean and well maintained.
There are very few places where you can go in this world that you can actually point out on any globe or map. So it's pretty neat!
There are excellent bird-watching facilities on the road into the park, and you can also see the Alton Lock and Dam which is just past the turnoff for the park.
NOTE: the last four point seven miles of the road into the park is a one-and-a-half Lane dirt road. If it has rained recently, it will be muddy. We have had no problems reaching it in a compact car or in a Ford Crown Victoria, but I would not take a car that is very low-slung or easily stuck in the mud.
In addition, there is one small stretch of the path from the parking to the actual Confluence point that is not concrete. This stretch is flat so as long as it's dry you should be able to get a wheelchair there.
