‪This is a great trail and park that I bet a lot of people in the area are not familiar with. The trail is packed crushed rock which is perfect for running, hiking or bike riding. Along the main trail there are a few places the trail veers off onto other trails into the woods or other connections for added miles. The Meramac river is close to the beginning of the Al Foster park. There is a large beach area for fishing and swimming.‬

‪I love the Al Foster trail. It is a well maintained gravel trail along the Meramec River with lots of trees. It connects to the Rock Hollow Trail and Rockwood Reserve. You can walk, run, or bike for many miles. It is really awesome.‬

‪A truly beautiful trail for walkers, runners or bikers. It is an old railroad with the tracks removed and crushed stone applied, so it is flat! It goes from Al Foster trailhead in Glenco to Castlewood State Park, if you are adventuresome. Awesome views of bluffs, water and forests. Very relaxing and more enjoyable than running on a track!‬

‪This is a 2.5 mile paved trail down to the Meramac river. It is downhill from the top and then all uphill back. The scenery is great and very clean. From the end by the river you can then go on a chat trail that goes along a miniature railway line and the river for a longer walk. There are no facilities along either trail.‬

‪Secluded, very flat, dirt / crushed-stone trail right next to Meramec river, but easy access to the Glencoe trailhead just off highway 109. Sherman beach (really a gravel bar) is near the other end of the trail and is a great gathering place to take in nature. Trail occupied by mostly walkers, then runners, followed by a few bikers but is very wide (approx 8 feet) to allow easy passing. There are about 4 sets of permanent side benches scattered along the route. Connecting side trails include Bluff View and Rock Hollow -- both are considerably steeper than Al Foster. 12-inch gauge train line runs mostly along the north side of the trail but does cross it in a few locations -- not a big deal (engines do not run very often). Much more enjoyable / relaxing than running on a track or through a neighborhood -- I drive out of my way to exercise on Al Foster, when time allows. This area did recently get flooded, but trail has recovered nicely.‬

‪Walk this trail regularly with a group of mostly senior women. It's easy for walkers, runners, bikers, etc.

The current trail length is 5 miles (3 miles to Sherman Beach and another 2 miles to Castlewood State Park. The trail is eight foot wide and made of crushed stone. The trail generally follows the Meramec River from the Al Foster Trailhead in Glencoe to the east through Sherman Beach and into Castlewood State Park. It provides scenic views of bluffs forest, areas, and the Meramec River.

Parking, restrooms and trash cans are available at the Al Foster Memorial Trailhead.
located just north of the trail. Currently there are portable restroom facilities, picnic tables, and parking lot. Please note water is NOT available.‬

‪Wildwood did a great job with the Al Foster Trail. Beautiful vistas along the Meremec from above as this Union Pacific rail right-of-way reutilization provides a great walk, bike ride or equestrian 5 mile path to the beachhead.Great place to catch the fall leaves as well.‬

‪This trail offers plenty of variety for mountain bikers and hikers alike. You can stay in the flats for an easy bike or hike, or you can take the Bluffview Trail or Blue Ribbon or Rock Hollow for intermediate to advanced offroad biking/hiking. You can even trek all the way into Castlewood Park for more variety and challenge. Good trails are here! ‬

‪You can park on 109 & ride past the mini-train station along the Meramec for a smooth, flat ride or continue on to Candlewood State Park for some rugged terrain. You can go the opposite direction through Rockwoods Reservation for a paved hilly ride. Another route is very new & goes from Al Foster up a long hill to Ridge Meadows Elem. School. I would recommend this trail, but pick you route wisely; you can make it as long or hard as you want. I'm not sure which part is Al Foster, probably many connecting trails.‬

‪The Al Foster trail is part of a cooperative trail system that follows the north side of the Meramec river for approximately five miles from highway 109 east to Castlewood State Park and eventually on to Lone Elk Park at highway 44 and highway 109. Here’s a link with directions: http://www.greatriversgreenway.org/trails/al-foster-memorial-trail.aspx

The trail offers a smooth crushed rock surface suitable for walking or biking and remains level throughout on the trail. The trail follows the river and provides interesting views of the river and of the cliffs to the North. There are several substantial bridges crossing creeks that run into the Meramec River. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the trail, biking and hiking only. There are alternate trails running off the main trail that are less formal and offer bikers and hikers a more varied terrain. Eventually the trail will be connected to the existing paved trails North in Wildwood, allowing residents to hike or bike from Town Center to the Al Foster trailhead.
There is a small park with playground and restrooms near the parking lot for the trail. There is also a unique narrow gauge railroad that runs along part of the trail. The railroad operates on Sundays and provides a unique experience to enjoy riding through the woods behind a small steam engine.
Highly recommended, the trail is well drained, open and functional in most weather, free and open to the public.‬
