OK, so Magnesia Stadium is REALLY well preserved and NO ONE is there. However, first, it's really hard to get to -- come in from the north road where at least it's paved (we came from the south side and it the last 1/4 was dust/stones). Second, there is now a gate. We could not find any ticket counter anywhere. I won't disclose how we got in, but let's just say we had the entire stadium to ourselves AMAZING - until an employee came down angrily and threatening us; very gratefully, he let us buy a ticket from him direclty (3 EU).

This is a lovely archeological site. I think we were the only visitors that day. The site is still being excavated so not all bits are viewable. You will need to drive here, but it is well worth the visit. Be sure to see the theatre which is a Short car ride to get to. Wow! Loved the free book that explains so much about the site.
There was no cafe here or nearby, so take water with you. Also because it is a working site it does get very dusty.

It is one of the ancient cities worth seeing in the Aegean Region. Although there is a lot of space to be excavated, it is still astonishing in its current state. You should spare more than 1 hour. You need to drive to the stadium structure. After a short walk, you reach a very well-preserved structure. The theater building, excavations of which have not yet begun, is also on this road.

Doğa ile barışık olmak gerek. Menderes nehrinin taşkın yatağı içerisinde yer alan bu antik kent üzerinde neredeyse 3 m civarında aluvyon bulunmakta yer yer. Ekli fotoğraf delili.Efes yanında bir uydu gibi kalsa da hayli katılacak yer olmalı.

Kent efsaneye göre Thessalia’dan gelen Magnetler tarafından kurulmuş. Apollon’un kehaneti ve yol göstermesi üzerine Anadolu’ya gelen Magnetlerin kurdukları ilk Magnesia’nın yeri ise bilinmemektedir. Kent çok büyük ve düz bir alana yayılmış. Gezmesi özellikle yazın biraz sıkıntılı olabilir. Ağaçsız, gölgesiz çorak bir alan. Girişinde belediyenin işlettiği ağaçlar altında çok şirin bir çay kahve alanı mevcut. Hipodrom yürüyüş mesafesinde değil. ( dediğim gibi çok çok büyük bir alana yayılmış bir şehir) arabayla gitmeniz gerekiyor ancak biz ulaşamadık. yolun bir kısmı çok çok bozuktu aracımız ilerleyemedi.

Combined with my trip to Aphrodisias (actually both are far away from each other and those two ancient cities I wanted to visit anyway) I only looked at small ruins and bunch of ancient carved pillars and stones. It seemed not that interesting ... but when I looked at the ancient walls across the railway outside the fenced-ancient city, voilà there is the real ancient city!!! I wondered if constructing the road in between the ancient city was a wise decision and it might be ancient statues below. Anyway, exploring the part of Magnesia across the railway is more worthy that the fenced-area. The ruins are somehow covered by bush, free to explore and visit but still visible.

Magnesia is near present day Germancik, and signed from the Aydin to Selcuk road. This main road towards Söke runs through the site. Entry is 10TL or use a museum card.
Magnesia was built by the Magnetes. Some people were attracted to them but others repulsed, so this was their second attempt of a city, with better fortifications than the original near the sea, at what is know Lake Bafa (Bafa Gölü). It also protected them from the meandering of the original River Meander (Menderes Nehri). There was a school of architecture here, at the time known as the Bronze Age in Britain when mud huts were the latest des res.
The main site has some notice boards and suggested walking routes. It is uneven but there are no hills. A recently excavated area shows houses with underfloor heating.
You need to go out on to the road then turn right on to the small road to the theatres and stadium, which are signposted. The dirt road to the stadium is steep and loose surfaced but nothing to stop a careful drive in my small hatch back. It is worth the trip. You could park by the gymnasium, which is fenced off, and walk the last 200m up the hill. I rang the bell at the stadium gate and waited for the caretaker to come up on his moped and let me in. Better to let them know in the pay kiosk that you are heading for the stadium.
The stadium was the highlight for me. It came into view and wow. No problem imagining chariot racing here. Today wild flowers add to the spectacle. It was one of the largest stadiums in the ancient world with a capacity of 40,000 and is largely intact.
The theatre is on the way to the stadium and the dirt road is marked as a walking route but driving would be possible. The theatre which once held 4700 spectators is now home to olive trees and not a great spectacle.
There is a part of the city across the main road and a railway runs through it. A wall from 2500 years ago with a railway and road running through it, just adds fuel for the imagination.

This place is pretty quick to visit. They have parking. Entry was 10TL. The main site is in pretty poor condition. Lots of overgrown areas so not really good trails so you can know where to walk. To get up to the theater, you have to drive up a train. The main part of the road is paved, but then you have to turn and go up a narrow dirt road to see each of the theaters. I visited just after it rained so some parts were muddy. There was one part where I started to get stuck in the mud but luckily I was OK. Overall, a nice place to visit after seeing the main attractions.

Merhaba pzt dışında açık. Ücret almadılar. Ama müze kart her yerde geçerli. İki bölüm olduğu ve birbirlerinden biraz uzak olduğu için bir saatten fazla diye düşünebilirsiniz. İyi gezmeler.
