Our trip with Yellowstone Wolf Tracker was simply the best vacation my husband and I have ever taken. We took the premium tour at the end of January, and I can’t say enough about how much fun we had and how much we learned. My husband and I love Yellowstone, and we visit multiple times in the summer each year, mainly to look for wildlife and hike. One of our main “goals” for this trip was to learn how to find wolves and also understand their behavior and family units, and we were delighted with all we learned. I saw and heard three wolves howling to other members of their pack farther down the valley, and it literally brought tears to my eyes. Seeing wolves in Yellowstone has been a lifelong dream, and this trip was on my bucket list.
Our guides, Jamie and Michelle, were incredibly knowledgeable and shared their passion for wolves and other wildlife, as well as the geologic and natural aspects of the park all throughout the day. They found wolves for us several times out in the park, and we learned wolf tracking skills along the way. They taught us how to use scan using the scope and focus it on our target (wolves), and after a bit of practice we could do it by ourselves. They also taught us the ridges/valleys, etc., where wolves are most likely to be observed. We saw many bison and elk, along with whitetail and mule deer, pronghorn, moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats, accomplishing the “Ungulate Grand Slam” for this trip. We also saw coyotes, Clark nutcrackers, bald eagles, a long-tailed weasel, and a pine marten, which was a special treat!
Another part of this trip that we loved were our conversations with Nathan Varley and the speakers each evening. Nathan has such a deep knowledge and appreciation for Yellowstone’s wolves in particular, and he shared his knowledge generously with us all. We loved hearing the stories about the wolf reintroduction to Yellowstone and the individual wolves’ stories since then. Invited speakers included filmmakers/artists (Bob Landis, Dan Hartman and Quinn Harrison) and a naturalist who specializes in tracking and wolf genealogy (Jim Halfpenny). Jim took the time to teach me how to count teeth to determine whether a given skull was from a bear or a mountain lion. I would love to take a full class some day on tracking and identifying carnivores.
We are planning a late spring Wolf Tracker one-day trip this year, and we will most certainly sign up for another multi-day tour in the future.

This company is first rate! The guides are knowledgeable, friendly, and VERY helpful. They are local and well connected, that means you get some opportunities that others do not. The vans are comfortable (I am 6'6" tall), warm, and reliable. AND what can you say about the evening meals except amazing! Their chef is fantastic, you won't be hungry, nor will you be compromising on great food.
While there is not a guarantee that you will see wolfs, the guides are very focused on making sure you have the best experience possible. Over 3 days I would be surprised if you didn't get a great opportunity for viewing some wolfs. We watched a pack lounging and playing and we watch a skirmish with the bison while they were hunting.
You will probably see a bunch of other wildlife like elk, moose, bison, coyote, eagles, martins, etc. You won't regret going and you will be even more pleased that you went with Wolf Tracker.

My wife and I have been to Yellowstone on several occasions and we have always self- guided. This time we decided to take a trip with Yellowstone Wolf Tracker. The staff of YWT are all highly credentialed. Many of them have worked in field as researchers and all of them are very knowledgeable in Yellowstone history, geology and it's ecosystem. Although the focus was wolves we watched a lot of different animals and learned a lot from the wonderful guides and the evening speakers. I would highly recommend a trip with YWT !

I would highly recommend a tour with this company, even if you're not keen on wolves. Don't let the company name fool you. I'm also a birder and a very general wildlife enthusiast, and these folks were also top-notch guides on everything non-wolf. I was a bit reluctant to book the tour because I didn't have high hopes for seeing wolves. I've been led by many wildlife guides on several different continents, and my guide Quinn definitely had the most impressive resume as a researcher and naturalist. To be a wolf researcher in Yellowstone, you also need to be an elk expert (and more), so our guide's ecological knowledge was very holistic, diverse, and well-rounded.
We did see wolves on one of the 2 days. The weather was not favorable for our first day, as overnight snow can make them hunker down and less willing to come out into the open. On day 2, we saw the Wapiti pack after they had taken down an elk the night prior. Had I not seen wolves on either day, I still would have been a very happy camper since you track them and learn so much about them regardless.
My wife and I spent 2 days with Quinn, and I would love to come back next year for another trip. 11/10 would recommend.

Such an amazing trip! We saw wolves chasing an elk, several moose, several fox, a herd of bull elk and copious bison. The guides were top notch in sharing information and knowing where to go to see all there was to see. Highly recommend Yellowstone Wolf Tracker!

I went in a two day private tour with Quinn. Wolves were pretty far away but I saw them really well. I knew the odds of them being super close is slim so I wasn’t disappointed. We saw countless of other animals. And I learned so much about wolves. Quinn was absolutely fascinating to listen to. All the other wolf tracker guides were the nicest people. I am so glad I booked that tour. Highly recommend them.

We took the 5 day wolf watching tour and spotted wolves on 4/5 days. The guides are fountains of information, the food during the day is good and eaten in the field but the dinners are truly fantastic.
The guides take you all over, up hills, hidden pull outs, steeping us in wolf and nature info the whole time. We got to meet several Yellowstone scientists who gave presentations after dinner.
Winter spotting is great and the guides made sure we had plenty of bathroom breaks, food, and warming up time in the van.
Would do it again! Perhaps a different time of year. Might be fun to add a few days of hiking in Yellowstone afterwards.

An incredible and inspiring experience! We did a wolf watching experience with Wolf Tracker in January. We met passionate, well-educated people who have dedicated their lives to Yellowstone area and the wildlife there. It is inspiring to spend so much time with such dedicated people. We also enjoyed meeting so many like-minded, diverse fellow travelers.
During our time on the trip, first and foremost, we watched wolves from two Yellowstone packs through spotting scopes for extended periods of time. We watched them hunting, resting after getting full bellies, and most specially communicating (watching and listening to them howl to each other is incredible ) and traveling as a pack with their young and their alphas. We watched them play together, chasing and tumbling through the snow, which was incredible.
Almost as special was all of the other wildlife we found with our guides. We watched bighorn sheep, mule deer, white-tail deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, moose, lots of bison, coyotes, mountain goats, bald eagles, long-tailed weasel, and a pine marten.
I can’t recommend this trip highly enough. I love to see new places, and often when I travel, I fall in love with a place but I know I won’t likely go back to it because I just have so many places I want to see. But this trip—well, I just can’t wait to do it again!!

We did the 6 day vacation package and a 2 day private tour and had Jamie, Michelle and Michael as our guides
Their enthusiasm and knowledge of the park is outstanding and they really went out of their way to make sure we saw as many of the parks animals as possible.
The first pack of Wolves we saw coming over the hill brought tears to my eyes, it was really magical.
The vehicles are comfortable and have great views and the scopes they provide make you feel like the Wolves are just a few yards away.
Nathan answered my numerous questions before I arrived very quickly and you could tell that this is more than just a business for him it is a passion.
I really can not praise Wolf Tracker enough, they are an exceptional company.

Yes, not a Government agency, main road used is open.
Hi,
Do you operate in the winter as well as summer? Could you suggest good accommodation that we can be picked up at the tours. Is there information on your web site regarding rates?
Thank you

Yes, they operate in Winter. In fact that's the best time to see wolves. I have a friend going with them in December! There's ample accommodation available in Gardiner. Good luck!

Hi, Joseph. What would you like to know about this attraction? what did you judge to be a highlight of this experience, how did your guide perform, did they accommodate your needs, what time did you tour, what could have improved your touring experience, when you tour with them again, what else would you do to make this a wonderful experience?thanks Joe Philipp, ..................... going there at the end of September, 2018
Thanks!

We have taken tours with Wolf Tracker twice and both times exceeded our expectations. Our guide on both trips was Evan (I requested him the second time) and he is extremely knowledgeable, personable and passionate about his work. Both trips were in the winter, one in February with eight people and one in March with four people. Both times the vehicle was comfortable and the food provided was perfect for a "brunch in the snow". The tours start between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. as that is the optimal wildlife viewing time. The only thing a guest needs to do to have the best possible experience is to follow Wolf Tracker's guidelines on what to wear, what to bring, and what to read to be informed and enhance your experience; the guide will do the rest. By the end of the day all in our group were planning their next trip -- that speaks volumes!

Will I be able to see some wildlife in late April/early May ?

Yes! Spring in Yellowstone represents a wildlife homecoming and extravaganza of sorts. I've long believed the month of May to be one of the best months of the year for seeing wildlife in Yellowstone. The park service aims to open the interior roads each April by the 21st, which opens up the opportunity to travel down to Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone the days following or proceeding your wildlife tour. Are there any service providers that you know of that match people together to make a large wildlife viewing party? $625 won't work for the 3 of us, but we could afford the prices quoted for a bigger group if splitting evenly amongst us. Thanks.
