We're staying in Butte and I read their website. It said that this old West town was open 7 days a week. Only 2 cafes and the Mercantile was open. While the Mercantile is a cute store, the town is a big nothing. Even if all of the stores/ buildings had been open, it still would not have been worth the 1.5 hour drive. Their PR exceeds the reality.

Virginia City and sister Nevada City are each wonderful experiences. Amazing detail of historical items, original and reconstructed buildings that were saved from destruction. An eye opening view of life in the late 1800’s. Virginia City is free. Nevada City charges a small fee.

Virginia City wasn't on our road trip itinerary, but we discovered it along the way, so we decided to stop. I'm so glad we did. So much history. So many original things. Make your first stop the visitor center. The nice man working was a wealth of information about the town. Plus, you can pick up a map of the town, with the descriptions of all the buildings, etc. There's a nice park, a short distance from the visitor center, which is perfect to cool off in the shade (it was very hot the day we were there) and have a picnic (which we did). Shop the shops, look at all the store (museums), take one of the tours (we did the old fire truck tour) and enjoy. We were there about 3 hours and could very easily have spent a few more hours, as we didn't see everything. The only disappointed for us, was the train to Nevada City broke down just before we walked to the train station. They were giving out refunds, when we arrived.

Awesome historical museum that reflects the old mining town back in the old days. Nice artifacts and pictures on the walls and brochures to walk you through the town. The people are friendly and reminds you of what it was like back in another century. Check it out !!

We had a great time walking down the streets of Virginia City. Great way to see the way things used to be in the Ole West. It is free to walk into the buildings and see all of the antiques. There are information signage throughout. I learned about the amazing Sarah Bickford. Grateful that this history was preserved. Looks like the locals try to keep it going. Hope it can continue.

I had heard of Virginia City from my readings but really hadn't thought of visiting until we were headed south out of Bozeman, MT and were going to be close by so we decided to check it out. We were so glad we did! Despite the fact that it was about 32 degrees and snowing pretty heavily, the restored mining town is a must visit just for the history and experience. Some of the shops weren't quite open as they were getting ready for Memorial Day weekend in a few days but all of the people were warm and friendly and genuinely happy to see us.
So, take a few hours and walk up and down the main street, see the restored buildings, and get a glimpse of life in a boom town in the late 19th century. The kids will love it too!

We spent about four hours here, looking into the shops and stores, reading the historical markers and informative signage, and just absorbing the atmosphere.
We especially enjoyed the grocery store with all of the old packaging and labels. It brought back many memories of my grandmothers’ kitchen in the early 50’s.

This popped up on my app as a “Ghost Town” but it is very much alive. Wonderful historic displays in the old buildings that you can walk around and view. Mingled among those are active shops open for business now. We spent about 2 hours here and that was ample time for a quick walk through everything. It was a glimpse into the past. There are a couple of places to get food. A tavern for a drink and even an old hotel that is currently open to stay in. Well worth the stop if you are in the area. Also historic trolley tour on open air old tram, wished we had time to do that.

Husband and I will be going to Yellowstone in early May 2021, and have carved out a couple of days to explore other areas or towns in Montana. We would like to see Virginia City/Nevada City, is anything open there that time of year? Any suggestions, or a must see? We are staying in the Livingston area.
Is this attraction open now? End of October? So many places are closed for shoulder season.

Hello,
Virginia City is a living town so yes you can visit it any day of the year. Many of the attractions and restaurants are only open between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Thanks for your question.

Virginia City and Nevada City are both dog friendly. Most of the businesses are open from 10-5 Memorial Day weekend thru Labor Day. Nevada City is only open to the public from Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day.

Some features are likely to be closed but don't let that discourage you. You will still see lots of things, and the autumn season will add to the experience. You can look in the windows to get an idea of the old-time stuff inside if a specific building is indeed closed. Unless you are a hardcore history buff you will likely still enjoy your visit even if the town seems a bit quiet. I encourage you to still go in October.
