‪Not very popular among visitors so it makes it a peaceful place to visit. Not much to see, but it's still worth the drive, especially if you're already going to be visiting Merritt Reservoir.‬

‪We found it odd that this was called a National Forest as most of what we saw was grassland. We stayed in the Steer Creek Campground which did have trees. The water there tasted terrible. There were two pit toilets, one was filled with flies. Looking out over the grasslands you could see deer and cows. Campground was lightly used.‬

‪Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest manages 116,000 acres of tall grass prairie and woodlands in the Nebraska sandhills. The area abounds with wildlife such as white-tailed deer, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes and foxes. More than 150 species of birds are listed. Wildflowers are abundant in late summer when carpets of sunflowers and goldenrod carpet the prairie. Wildlife is best seen early in the morning or at dusk, either from several gravel roads or the Blue Jay hiking trail (about one mile, starting at the campground). Forest Service Road 5 traverses the refuge from route 97 to spur road 16F, crossing the dam forming Merritt Reservoir near route 97. You can fish in Merritt Reservoir and (in season) hunt for game birds and waterfowl (you must adhere to Nebraska Game and Parks regulations and licensing requirements). There is a boat launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes where spur road 16F crosses the Niorbrara River. Alas, there is no potable water at the boat launch, so be sure to bring ample supplies. The Steer Creek campground on the south side of the Forest has 23 sites, potable water and pit toilets. The campground is well-shaded by tall pines, and each site has a picnic table and grill. Camping fees are $5 per night (seniors with a Golden Age passport are half price). To reach McKelvie, drive about 18 miles south of Nunzel, NE on Spur Road 16F, or about 26 miles from Valentine, NE on state road 97.‬
