‪$16.00 for admission to the tower for us. We felt being on a budget it was a little steep for an elevator ride to see a train yard. I asked if we could walk around the gift shop. She said yes but stay in this area only. Maybe she thought we were going to sneek up the stairs? lol There is a Hall of Fame exhibit in the lobby that reviews history and people of the area. Outside there is a dinning car and handcar.‬

‪This may be a favorite place for railroad buffs, but anyone can enjoy a short stop here to learn what railroads have done and still do for America. The exhibitions cover a wide range of subjects, some of them more technical and/or historical and others aimed more at what might be described as "human interest."

Since I fall into the latter category, I was quite taken with a small but emotionally poignant exhibit on "Baby Trains," featuring video, pictures and stories of a "foster care" movement that operated roughly from the time of the Great Panic of 1873 to the Stock Market Crash of 1929, with the aim of "finding homes" for children of poor parents via placing them on westward trains to be "adopted" by people along the railroad route. It is a very controversial subject to take on, but the railroads played a big part and so it is appropriate to present it here.

By contrast, my better half was fascinated by an exhibition on the operation of rail yard switching systems, a very pertinent subject given the dramatic views from the tower over the world's largest classification yard. It is indeed huge, understandably inviting great interest in how this is done, involving so many trains with so many cars constantly being moved to create new configurations heading out on so many different routes. It all starts here. Wow.

I think any time spent here, even if short and selective, will be time well spent for a majority of visitors, and not just train enthusiasts. There is plenty here to see and do, for all ages and for all areas of interest. And you will walk away understanding how the railroads played their important part in the country's development.

There's a very nice gift shop, too, with something for everyone, including children.

Highly recommended.‬

‪The displays right when you walk through the door give a history of the railroad and accounts of people who contributed to the railroad in major ways. I did not pay to go up to the viewpoint. I know what a rail yard looks like and I was way more interested in the historic aspect of the yard.‬

‪This is slightly to the west of town, but relatively easy to find. It has a lot going for it. North Platte's big claim to fame is the largest rail yard. We have driven by North Platte and this place for many years, zipping by on I-80 as I would suppose do many other people, but this time we stopped overnight in North Platte. Having driven on all the east-west freeways in the U.S., we wanted to see the country from a different perspective, and drove straight up highway 83 from Liberal, Kansas to Minot, North Dakota. Worth it.
Which brings us to this tourist stop. Was it worth the side trip? Yes! Parking was ample, access was easy. There is a moderately sized gift shop on the first floor, with some history explanations, and clean restrooms. But the main attraction, of course, is the viewing tower. There are two options. You can exit the elevator at the floor with an outdoor view, or the floor with the more popular enclosed view. Each has a different sort of experience. Info boards are on the top floor. The floor below it with outdoor viewing, is simply that, outdoor viewing, facing only the train yard. The enclosed viewing room is a 360 experience.
If you like odd places or trains, this is worth a stop.‬

‪A great place for railroad enthusiasts but the average joe will get a lot out of seeing how train cars are moved from the east to the west in our country. A volunteer railman was there to answer any questions as you watch the trains being sorted.‬

‪A surprisingly interesting stop! Learned a lot about the early railroad industry, orphan trains, trains through the war years. Very welcoming staff and free coffee too! ‬

‪I stopped in as a casual train observer and lover of all world's largest things. If you are not interested in trains, this one probably won't impress you too much. If you are, however, this is engaging and worth a visit. There are small museum displays, but you are mostly going for the observation tower. You can see plenty of train movement at any given time, but I feel the observation tower was a hair to sort to really get the bird's eye view I was hoping for. Nonetheless, it is a pretty neat stop with a lot of history. It won't take you terribly long to see what you need to see here, so no need to plan for a long detour.‬

‪Thank heavens a friend told us to go here when she learned we were doing an overnight in North Platte! This place is an historical gem. I will be researching it for months. The history of North Platte is intertwined with the settlement of the West, helping during wars and basic human kindness. You will find it all here.‬

‪If you like trains, go here. Excellent view of one of the big hump yards in the nation, and a retired railroad worker was available to answer questions. Very useful.‬

‪This is an amazing place to see the trains in action and learn the history of railroading. The tower is 7 and 8 stores up by elevator. Very educational. Sort of ran into this by accident and glad we did. Didn’t see it listed in the Nebraska travel guide.‬
