‪Sometimes when you least expect it you run across an excellent small town museum such as this one. While the museum is there to tell the history of Lincoln County Nebraska, it tells an overall great story of history. As a geek I really enjoyed the extensive display of early telephone equipment. The area telling the story of the WWII canteen located in North Platte was interesting as well. Besides the museum there are several outdoor buildings restored to their vintage look in a small village setting. Nearby to the Buffalo Bill Ranch and a highly recommended stop if you are in the area.‬

‪I took my youth group to this museum and it was a great place for the students to walk around the property and learn about Buffalo Bill. There is a small tour in the museum house that is also interesting. ‬

‪This is a nice little museum with a variety of well done displays though don't expect polished and professional. One of North Platte's claims to fame was the canteen that was run mainly by local women during WWII to provide refreshments to the passing trains filled with soldiers; probably the best display on site commemorates the canteen. You may well have the place to yourself when you visit, which is always kind of nice. Not for everyone but we enjoyed it.‬

‪Nice museum and village. Lots of local memorabilia. Not sure if there is more going on in season but I was the only one there today. Did enjoy the story of the canteen feeding the troop trains. ‬

‪One of the best museums of the early days on the Northern Plains. Lot's of fun things to see inside and out. Took me back to my childhood days on a farm in Northern South Dakota. Definitely recommend a visit!‬

‪We decided to visit this museum based on the recommendation of a guide at the Union Pacific Bailey Yard.

The museum provided an opportunity to see life as it was many years ago. There were numerous older buildings, including houses, a barn, a church, an old train car, and more. It showed how residents of the area lived. The best feature of the museum was that we could walk into those original buildings and feel the past lives.

They sponsor many events there, so check their web site for a listing and dates.‬

‪I came to learn more about the North Platte Canteen. Enjoyed the photos, artifacts, writings, and video about an amazing story from WWII. If you don't know the story, I encourage you to read "Once Upon a Town" and be inspired by such generosity and love, or what we call the aloha spirit in Hawaii. Amazing. Museum workers were wonderful. They allowed us to use golf carts to help take our elderly relatives around the outer portion of the museum. Loved the preserved buildings and family enjoyed the old tractors. There was a scavenger hunt that kept our older kids busy while the adults took their time going through. I wish I had more time to look through the natural history section.‬

‪I brought 7 friends home to Nebraska from Denver to see the sandhill crane migration. I wanted to make an epic road trip and have interesting stops along the way. So, though the museum is closed in the winter, I called to see if I could make an appointment with Jim to stop by as I’ve been really wanting to see the canteen exhibit. I love off the beaten track museums and find them very interesting. This one did not disappoint, and much of that was due to Jim’s tour as we wouldn’t have learned nearly so much on our own. It was one of the things that made our trip so special. Jim gave us a tour and provided the backdrop for understanding Nebraska for the whole trip. We had an understanding of the Prairie (and lack of trees), the hardness of life, and the community that made people successful. He Explained the farm implements, one room school, kit houses, the telegraph and trains, and the local area. Jim knew tons, kept it interesting and was a phenomenal guide and made it come to life. We were all very moved by the story of the canteen and the sacrifice of the people-most of us were brought nearly to tears. We had some world war II buffs and they Were surprised to find some history here that they had never heard before. This was one of the highlights and really made our trip. I know it seems like a big thing to say for a museum and such a quick experience for us, but one of the girls said it was life changing for her as she heard the stories and sacrifice from the canteen. To think that this small town created a big impact on morale in 15 min railroad stops by providing such hospitality that they got letters years later is incredible. We were inspired to live better for others in our communities too. I’m so glad we stopped and that he made time for us. This experience and the stories from the canteen is something that will stick with us for a long time.‬
