Enjoyed two days of fishing with Lake Big Mac Spoiled Guide Service and caught some great eating fish along with master angler trophy Walleye caught and released, Master angler Crappie, and Master Angler Small Mouth Bass. Thanks!

After a four hour drive, we arrived at a lake with no water. The campground hosts did not inform us of the conditions before we purchased our $36 parking pass (for three days). You could not see the lake from the check-in point. We drove down to the beach to find no water. Immediately, we asked for a refund and were turned down. We asked to be relocated and were turned down. The staff we dealt with on the phone and in-person were rude and unreasonable. Save yourself the disappoint! Do NOT make the drive for this horrible Nebraska state park.

-white sand beach / soft sand
-beautiful sunset
-beach camping
-campfires allowed at beach sites
-camp next to the water
-stargaze
-dog friendly
-clear water

-boating

Cons
-4WD required to park next to beach sites.
-Small cars cannot drive to up on the sand, they will get stuck.
-road is NOT close to the water. You must drive on the sand to get to the beach site.
-beach sites are not close to restrooms.
-Portable Toilet Device needed, restrooms are NOT in close walking distance when you camp near the water.
-campsites are close to each other.
-be prepared for loud cars accelerating through the sand at all hours of the day/night.
-possibility of getting stuck in the sand. Tow out cost money.
-dog owners don’t always pick up poop
-A Nebraska State Park Permit is required for each vehicle entering the park area; Camping fees do not include this permit. Additional $12 per day.
-alcohol is not permitted
-bring a broom sand gets everywhere when camping on a beach site.
-showers cost money and lines get long to take a shower.

This place is fantastic, and the State does a great job with the campgrounds. It is a place to stop and camp for the night and enjoy the Lake. Both sides of the dam are equally unique. It's always lovely when the State Parks care about their Land.

We chose this campground and site because it was on a lake and we thought that after a 10 hour drive the kids would enjoy a swim on a hot summer day. Well, there is no lake! And we had to pay $12 on top of our camping reservation for one night. There is trash all over our site, it has fire ants, the water is shared with the neighbor so our hose is across our yard and 50 feet to our camper, and worst of all there are prickly thorns all over the ground that stick to your shoes by the hundreds so no going barefoot and constantly sweeping. Of all the campgrounds we've stayed at, this is the worst. It honestly looks like end times at the beach, it's so sad.

We were hoping for a refreshing swim in the lake on a super hot day (105 degrees). Unfortunately, the lake is only 53% full and the water is far from the access roads. We paid $12 to enter the park, then found we couldn’t get to the water. Our little car actually got stuck in soft sand when we tried to get near the water. The sandy beaches are at least 100 yards wide because of the drought. We did see vehicles parked at the water’s edge in several locations but they all appeared to be pickup trucks with big tires. Our little car didn’t stand a chance! Some nice people pulled it back up to the road with a cable (so kind of them). In some places, the lake is just a big puddle surrounded by sand. The South Platte River at Ogallala isn’t there, it’s just a dry river bed.

This was the first time my wife and I camped here and it was great! the camp ground was clean the hook ups were problem free, loved the beaches there clean, and the white rockless sand was awesome, kudos to the people from the state who kept at least one boat launch very usable,also the wonderful staff at the visitor center we will be making regular trips to Lake Mac from now on.

The people who come here should be taking their trash with them than chucking it everywhere, water sand, vegetation. . . . . I was so saddened at this Mid-Western trash lake.

Plus? beautiful lake, wide beaches, well managed. great swimming.
Minus? young man at visitor center did not offer much information on the boat launch ramps ... was important due to low water level.
Beyond Control of the Game and Parks Commission? Weather: very windy.
Overall? YES! we'll return.

This is a large lake that seems best for boating. Nothing special however, and there are more scenic lakes. But if you are into boating you will likely find this spot fun to spend some time.

Is there any cell reception at the lake? We are going to the south side near the Hooks Lake Bar & Grill and we need to be able to receive calls.

I have personally never had a problem with cell reception (Verizon), BUT others have indicated it is sporadic. Hope that helps some.
Are there beaches currently or is the lake full?
