‪Beautiful view and a site to dig for trilobite fossils about 0.33mi in. Beware of suspicious people!‬

‪First of all, this is no casual hike. It's 4.7 mi, R/T. There are 3 Plateaus. Total elevation gain, of 2 Peaks is aprx 2,100 ft. It's challenging due to loose ground, Rocks. Advise Hiking Boots, or Approach Shoes. View from the 2nd Peak, where Antenna Arrays are, is nothing short of spectacular. A real cardio workout, for sure. Should take 2.5 - 3.5 hr, R/T. I love it!‬

‪This is a difficult 4 mile round trip hike due to the incline and loose gravel. I highly recommend hiking shoes, hiking poles and plenty of water. There is no shade so I would not recommend going in the summer.

To get here, you can use Waze and type Frenchman Mountain Trailhead. Once you park, go thru the gates and hike uphill about a mile to the first peak. From there you will see Frenchman Mountain. You will need to hike down about half mile to the base of Frenchman Mountain and then hike up about half a mile to the Frenchman Mountain peak, Once you are on top, enjoy the view and get some rest as the hike down is just as challenging as the hike up due to the steepness and loose gravel.

We did take our 6 year old and 9 year old but they are used to hiking and they did use hiking poles.‬

‪It's hard to get to, boring and unsafe loose rocks. Not fun. Red Rock is 100 times better. Mt. Charleston is 100 times better. Dont waste your time.‬

‪We wanted to get the best view of Las Vegas.

The Stratosphere is a good view, the top of Frenchman's Mountain is a view for the ages.

To get there get on to Lake Mead Parkway. Drive east until you are out of the city. After you pass the last houses you are about 5 minutes to the parking for the mountain. There are no signs for the mountain. The parking is on you right, look for a large silver gate which is the start of the trail.

Our preparations for the climb started 3 months ago when we started walking hills in our home area and I spent a lot of time on a treadmill with an incline of 15%. We bought hydration packs that hold 2 litres of water, packed lots of snacks, had sweatbands and hats, sunscreen and I wore ankle supports and proper hiking boats to try and protect against rolling an ankle. Bring as much water as you can carry, you will need it.
This is a 3-4 hour round trip, if you are not in good physical shape this is not something you should be trying. For much of the hike there is no cell phone reception so you are literally on your own, no way to get help.

We started our climb at 5:30 AM to avoid the heat, it was 82 degrees when we started. Sun wasn't yet up so we had lamps on our heads to see the beginning of the trail, this was more that enough light. By 6 Am we turned off the lights.

The hike went well. The view back down the mountain as you hike up it is inspiring. Footing and incline for the first 1/2 hour is reasonable. Then the incline increases and the footing is a lot of large gravel. I was very focused on my footing to avoid rolling my ankles.

Once you make it to the switchbacks things get better in terms of the incline, but footing is not great. It took us about an hour to get to the first summit, then we looked over and saw we still had another mountain to hike, that was a bit of a letdown.

We keep on going and the climb down from the first summit to the valley was challenging again because of the loose gravel and steepness of the incline.

Now we were facing the most challenging part of the hike. The final summit to Frenchman's mountain is very steep, footing is very poor and by then our legs were getting tired. Then finally after 2 hours we were looking down on Las Vegas from the cell phone tower on top of the mountain, What a view. We stopped, enjoyed the view, took lots of pictures and had breakfast on the mountain. We then walked over to the second tower and climbed around the propane tanks to get a view of the backside of the mountain, another WOW moment.

Now for the fun, getting back down. Note to all, with the loose gravel, poor footing and steepness of the incline it is as hard going down as climbing up. Make sure your boots are tied tight as you will be challenged to hold you pace going down. To add to the pain of the decent is you will now be in the hot sun. We each had 2 litres of water and we ran out half way down the mountain. It took us 2 hours to get back down and our legs were screaming for the last 1/2 hour. When we got back to the car it was 102 degrees.

We changed out of our boots, towelled off and headed back into Las Vegas to get something to drink.

We ask everyone to please clean up after yourselves. Whatever you take up with you bring back. We were very shocked at all the garbage we saw along the way.

It was a lot of effort but the the views you get are something you can't experience otherwise.‬

‪This hike is referred to as the Sunrise/Frenchman Mountain hike. It is a very challenging hike right from the start. Not for someone looking to get out of the casino, and take a walk around. If you want that, go to Red Rock with all the other tourists.

What makes this hike of tough, is it is actually two hikes in one. You start up the mountain immediately, but then you get to the top, there is a false peak. You will then have to go down the mountain and up another one. The trail very loose gravel and rocks. It is very slippery! I lost my footing and almost went down around a dozen times. And to make matters worse, it will probably take you longer to walk down the mountain then to walk up,

Tips:
It's Free!!!!!!!!!
A little over 2 miles to the top. Took me 1 hour 15 minutes up, and 1 hour 20 coming down.
Bring, lots of water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Shoes - gym shoes won't do you will slip, need to have hiking shoes and hiking sticks.

Directions - take 15 north, and get off on Lake Mead heading east. Drive 10-15 more minutes and it will be on the right side of the road. Hike starts at the metal fence.

CAUTION - When you get off at Lake Mead road, you will be in a very bad neighborhood. If you want to stop for gas, or snacks, wait until you get closer to the mountain. You will find all you need. (Gas stations, McDonalds, grocery store).‬

‪I was looking for a good hike east of town, and i found it. I researched this one and it sounded promising. It is essentially the access road for the cell towers on top, but how the get a vehicle up some of the steep parts and switchbacks would be interesting to see! Be prepared for three climbs...the first is a good sized hill, the a small drop before climbing up to the first peak, which is a saddle on a different mountain. Only then can you see the descent and climb to Frenchman's. Very cool views of the Strip to the east and Lake Mead to the west. Probably not many places with that view. There's a spot with a logbook to sign your name, but it requires a pretty dangerous scramble so I skipped it. Save energy because coming down is harder than going up. I would recommend trekking poles or a walking stick. I was wishing i had mine. Also, brink water. I drank 2 liters on a cool day. RT is four hours at a moderate pace.‬

‪People often mistake Frenchman Mountain to the lower peak just south of it, Sunrise Mountain. State Road 147 (Lake Mead Blvd) is your access point , just to the north of the peak, to various hiking trails that crisscross the area. Much of the area is a nature preserve, so some etiquette is required of visitors. Tremendous views, looking west, of the whole Vegas Valley and Spring Mountains. Good sunset vistas. Very rugged, however, bring plenty of water and know where you are going. Protective clothing probably makes some sense too, as the area is crawling (literally) with tarantulas, snakes, and especially scorpions. Hard core stuff.‬

‪My wife and I heard about this trail in a hiking book and have been wanting to do it for a while. The trail head starts off Hwy 147 (Lake Mead Blvd) east of Las Vegas. There is a large metal gate with a service road leading up Frenchman Mountain. No motorized vehicles are allowed passed the gate. The dirt road serves as the trail. The trail is only 2 miles long, but is very steep. It's a strenuous hike, but a rewarding one! It took us a couple hours to reach the summit. From the summit, looking West, you will see Las Vegas laid out like a carpet. Looking East offers an even better view with Lake Mead, Lava Butte and the multi-colored landscape. The beautiful colors and land formations are breathtaking! When your ready to come down, be careful not to slip in the loose gravel. My wife and I slipped a few times coming back. Allow about four hours for this experience.‬
