‪The Sandwich Notch is one of the best kept secrets in New Hampshire. The road is closed (Jersey barriers) in the winter and reopens after the snow melts and “mud season” ends. Usually reopens around May. The gravel road can be rough with a lot of blind spots and has a couple steep spots. Take your time and you’ll be fine. If you’re a trout fisherman the remote ponds offer excellent fishing. There’s also great hiking trails along the notch as well. If camping remember you’re in black bear country so keep your food appropriately stowed away. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be too worried about bears as you most likely will not encounter one while hiking or driving. The road goes deep into the forest and does not offer too many scenic views of the White Mountains. It can be challenging to get off of the grid nowadays, but the notch definitely provides you the opportunity. ‬

‪Whoever put this up there, you shouldn't have. Due to having so many travelers out there that have no idea what they're doing, it's been blocked off with Jersey barriers and those of us who have spent so much of our lives out there in the past and respected it can't drive out there anymore.‬

‪Sandwich notch rd goes all the way to Cameron/Thornton. About 10 miles.
It’s the foothills of the white mountains
There are trail heads that are off the road to some great ponds.
The road itself isn’t that great. I don’t recommend a low sitting vehicle as it’s a dirt road but the views are amazing. Stop by pulpit rock and imagine the pioneers crossing here by horse n buggy.
Good read before going across is
The Road to Sandwich Notch.‬

‪This best kept secret of the White Mountains takes you deep in the NH woods. It's a great place for the whole family just to take a breather and get away from everything. Make sure you have 4WD and take the trip over the Notch road. Just don't do it in the winter.‬

‪In summer and fall, there are many great hikes and mtn bike rides on trails in the notch. The notch itself is a great cyclocross bike ride or a car ride with clearance. It's single lane (find a place to pull over when another car comes along) with dips and rocks. The Notch used to be a thriving community so there are many cellar holes (house foundations) to find and try to visualize what life was like back then. A book or two was written about the notch so you may like to read and explore. Bring a plastic sled (snowboat) to slide down the rocks in the stream below Beede's falls (or wear out your shorts) and plunge into the small pool at the bottom. If you like exploring, you can easily spend a day in the Notch! In spring and winter the road is closed but you can snomobile, ski or snowshoe. One of the best is visiting Beedes falls in winter to see the ice cave that forms there. Hopefully no one has broken it open because it's best when there is just a small opening on the left and you crawl in to view the "winter lagoon", a magical ice palace in miniature!‬

‪If your looking for a nice little getaway you should head this way. Yes the road gets narrow but is easily negotiated even with the smallest cars. Followed by a little walk to the falls adds up to a very nice relaxing day. With a couple different paths to take it can turn out to be a nice afternoon spent.‬

‪We went to Beede Falls off Sandwich Notch Road today. The path from the parking lot is easy. It's about a 5 minute walk to the falls with a shallow swimming area. My girls loved it! There are more trails to the Cow cave and Lower falls. It's certainly off the beaten path but worth it!‬

‪You can stop in several places at trail heads or along waterfalls. The road can be tricky, because it is dirt, very hilly and rarely maintained. It is closed in the winter to cars, but becomes a great snowmobile trail. ‬

‪BE CAREFUL. I really don't suggest taking a low lift car unless it is the height of tourist season and is hasn't rain in a while - I have bottomed out before. A fun drive with lots to enjoy (especially the driving surface) and several points to stop, park and explore. There are several ponds off of a few trails/closed roads, streams and exciting history of a lost village that was depopulated by the civil war (you might have to really dig up this history). I 100% urge anyone with some clearance on the vehicle to take a half day or day and explore this road (get some info first from the Chamber) and enjoy NH wilderness.‬
