‪This is a small, time period farmhouse. A docent is in one of the rooms and can explain the history of the house and surrounding area. You can also walk past the barn and in the garden area. Note: There are flush toilets in the barn area.‬

‪This homestead site was deep into the White Mountain National Forest, on scenic NH 112 or Kancamagus Highway. The historic house itself was in excellent condition, as was a replica barn. Several interpretive displays explained local history. Paths had easy grades on natural and paved surfaces. A nearby 0.5-mile (0.8 km) Rail and River loop trail went down to Swift River; it also had several displays about railroads and logging. On the grounds were heirloom apple trees, a pioneers’ garden, and a small town cemetery. Restrooms were immaculate. Parking was in a designated, paved lot, requiring proof of paying a $5 day use fee. I liked all that I saw here; I disliked nothing.‬

‪We enjoyed stopping and seeing this home. The home is impeccably preserved and interesting to learn about the history of the area. We also hiked the rail and river trail...all very interesting.‬

‪This site was in the White Mountains National Forest, on the Kancamagus Scenic Byway (NH 112). Designated parking was near this photogenic historical house. It required proof of having paid a day use fee. A small garden near the house demonstrated the kinds of vegetables early settlers had raised. Excellent displays interpreted local history. A small town cemetery was nearby. Well-marked, easily walked trails led into the woods behind the house. The site would most appeal to local history buffs. I appreciated all that I saw here.‬

‪I stopped at the home during a fall foliage drive of the Kancamangus Highway. The home is impeccably preserved. Take a minute and stop to appreciate this home. You will be glad you did.‬

‪We stopped at the home on our trip down the Kancamagus Highway, for a walk, the lady who volunteers there happened to come during our visit and told us the interesting story about the husband who disappeared for 42 years, leaving his wife and family, saying he was going into town and would be back in an hour. The house is furnished with period items and worth a visit.‬

‪We almost didn’t stop here but we’re so glad we did. The home was open to visitors and a delightful guide was inside, demonstrating the brick oven in the kitchen and telling us the story about the couple who lived there. (The guide’s grandmother had actually been a regular visitor to the home.) The story is intriguing and the home is well preserved. Definitely worth stopping. ‬

‪We were exploring the Kancamagus highway and came upon the Russell-Colbath homestead. We were surprised that the house was open and even more surprised to find an official story teller inside. We spent a pleasant half hour hearing all about the history of the house and its owner. The interior is beautifully preserved and hearing how the owner lived was fascinating.‬

‪We were disappointed that the house wasn't open. We went on a Wednesday in early June. We enjoyed reading the signage, walking around area the site, and peeking into the windows of the house and the newly constructed barn.

Being able to actually see the inside of the house gives us an incentive to redo the Kancamagus Highway.

There were real bathrooms and they were open. These may be the only real bathroom on the highway as we saw lots of portopotties.‬

‪It's a nice historic place with an old cemetery near by but there are so many better things to do and see along this highway...‬
