Moderate hike with amazing views of Squam Lake on summit. About 1.5 hours round trip depending on how long you stay to enjoy the views.

Excellent hike. Maintained by the Squam Lakes Conservation Society and the University of New Hampshire. Wide, well marked trail. Perfect for children, dogs & older folk. The view from the top is awesome. The Ridge Trail over to East Rattlesnake is also a nice trail with lots of chipmunks scurrying around collecting acorns. Highly recommend both trails.

We went on this hike with a group from our condo along with Randy, a guide provided by the facility. We caravanned to the parking lot then Randy led us on the trail, answering questions as we walked. The trail is relatively easy, a bit steep in spots but in shade most of the way. The view from the top is fabulous! There were a few mosquitos, but not too many. We encountered a few other groups on the hike, but it wasn't really crowded.
One thing I would warn everyone about is that the two outhouses in the parking lot were absolutely disgusting, worst maintenance I've ever seen. One had an "out of order" sign on it and the other one was full to the brim. I am not exaggerating, it was literally full to the top. No paper either and the sanitizer was empty. I saw that the other one wasn't locked so I checked to see if it was usable. It was even worse; the seat had been torn off and there were feces everywhere. I would have taken pictures just to document but it was seriously too disgusting and Trip Advisor would have taken them down. My suggestion is: don't drink coffee before going and be prepared to hold it the entire time you are there.

The West Rattlesnake Trail is relatively short (0.7 miles one way) and the elevation is not too demanding. Saw many families on the trail some with their canine companions. The view of Squam Lake at the top is beautiful.
One caution, if you have small children there is a ledge at the top and children should be watched closely to avoid an unfortunate accident.

The trail is steep in sections so I'd say short enough to be easy but steep enough to be challenging. There has been some erosion but there were crews working on diverting the runoff. We are in our 60's and like to hike - hubby is 5 months post open heart surgery- so we rested a few times. We loved having our hiking boots for roots and rocks, but many people just had sneakers. We went mid week in the afternoon and it is before the busy season. Bring the Bug Spray!! The view is tremendous and it is well worth the hike.

Great trip. We arrived at approximately 3:30 pm and started the trek up the mountain. The climb up was moderately difficult, as several parts of the mountain were steep, and I did end up slipping several times. The scenery was very beautiful, and the view at the top of the mountain was spectacular. There were not that many people climbing up/down the mountain, and we were able to enjoy the view at the top in silence.
Tip: I recommend spending 2 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

Five of us today hiked West Rattlesnake wearing snowshoes. Trail was very icy so crunch crunch crunch. But nice not to slip and slide up or down. Spectacular day with nice views. Our first time in winter.

Beautiful hike to the top! Small limited parking area but people are always arriving and leaving. The path is well maintained and easy to moderate to climb. At the top the views are beautiful and there are plenty of spaces for people to sit and enjoy and still socially distance. A great find in the lakes region!

I haven't gone up in the winter. Probably open.
Is this trail closed due to mud as of april 22 2018?

Yes, it is closed for mud but people still hike up it with proper boots.

Thinking about trying this out with our kids. They are 6 and 4. I see posts saying this is an easy hike. Has anyone gone with young children? How was it? Any areas too steep or dangerous for kids?

I do not have young children. I would got with the Boston, MA, reply. The trail has been updated with a lot of steps. I imagine smaller legs will need more time. No need for speed hiking. Always Bring water, snacks and bring your trash home. Have fun.

I am confused as to the length of the hike. I see some folks say it is less than 2 miles round trip and then one writer (tank1050) said it is 1.7 mi. one way.
Please clarify, thanks!

I am not really sure of the exact distance, but I would be inclined to agree with the folks who say it is less than two miles round trip. I did my last hike when I was in my mid sixties, and it was no problem at all.
i would love to try this with our 2 senior dogs (bucket list) ~ roxie has some arthritis but it doesn't sound too difficult. are there any swimming holes nearby for after the hike?! roxie likes to swim.

It should be a great hike for older dogs. Warning that it gets VERY crowded on summer weekends. I don't know about public beaches on the Holderness/Ashland side; Sandwich beaches are posted for residents/guests & closed to dogs. But many of the lovely rivers & streams on all the hiking trails make for lovely foot-cooling for people & dogs both.

How to go up the right trail to get to the spot where you see Squam Lake.

When you climb up, there are two forks so to speak, on route, to the left is the best view, that's where my profile picture was taken, the right hand turn is, lets say a step up, and then you can sit on the granite and enjoy the view which is the beautiful lake and pine forest.

My Son and Granddaughter are up the mountain now, however they are not looking out over Squam.
Coming from Ashland and parking. They went up the right side of road. From there, where should they go, Is there just one path?

See answer to question below - that might help.
I went to Rattlesnake mountain in the early spring and saw it was closed for mud season and I am wondering when it will be opened back up? Thank you!

First, there are two Rattlesnakes; East Rattlesnake and West Rattlesnake. The best view of Squam and beyond is from West Rattlesnake. As far as I know there is no view from East Rattlesnake, but I have never been up myself. Tahe 113 from Holderness toward Sandwich. Follow the road for several miles and eventually you will see the Rattlesnakes trailhead on your right. Relative to the direction you were heading on the highway (east-ish), you want to hike to the right (south).
There is another trailhead very near the West Rattlesnake trailhead. That trail goes south to East Rattlesnake and is also known as the Col Trail (as I recall) - it goes up over the ridge between the two Rattlesnakes. Both Rattlesnake summit trails can be accessed from the Col Trail.
Apparently, there is another Rattlesname Mountain fairly close, but on the other side (east) of I-93. Not the same Rattlesnake Mountain, but I hear there is a good view from there as well.
