‪Great hike up to the summit today. This is not an easy hike. There are bouldering sections and elevation gain similar to some 4,000 footers. One ice patch left.‬

‪BRING LAYERS! This hike is a great workout in both endurance and strength. The trail starts off with a very long slight grade and then ramps up to a steep and rocky assault. Parts of it are a climb, not a hike, but it is well worth the effort. Weather on the summit varies greatly so check the weather. 3 weeks ago we summitted in short sleeves to a cloudless sky. Last weekend we summitted onto what quickly became a cloudburst of horizontal snow and driving wind which subsided just below the summit. There is already ice on the trail but you can navigate around it.‬

‪If there was a view, we couldn't see it through the fog. If it hadn't turned to wind driven rain at the summit, we may have waited for the fog to dissipate. The wind was brutal too. It felt so good to get down below the severity at the summit.
The hike up on White Dot was well marked and strenuous. It took 2.5 hours. There were other uphill hikers passing us, and a couple that were coming down.
The hike down was 15 minutes quicker, and we took White Cross.
The bathrooms were new and immaculate.
We paid $16 online the day before to park.
We arrived at 9am and departed at 2pm.
These 60 year old legs have bicycled 2200 miles this summer, but they are feeling this. My partners today were a 64 year old gentleman and my 28 year old daughter.
We will have to go back on a clearer day, and maybe use a back trail for something different, and maybe it will be easier? I prefer the chairlift up and the skis down.‬

‪Background: We are mid-60's. Decent shape. We walk and hike a lot, but right now we are not in great hiking shape. We went up White Dot - 1 hour 55 minutes with frequent short stops. It was a difficult climb over continuous rocks and boulders. In some spots we had to scramble. There are no ladders, ropes or cables for assist. At the top the view was panoramic and clear. Windy and cool on Sept 21, 2020. Not a cloud to be seen. We took White Cross down - 1 hour 40 minutes. A difficult descent that was rough on the knees. We used trekking poles up and down and we were glad to have them. We were glad we did this hike, but in all honesty I can't say we enjoyed it. Just too many steep climbs over difficult rocks and boulders - some of which were slippery from dust - not moisture. Suggestions: bring lots of water, if you have weak knees bring poles and consider elastic knee braces, go up Dot and down Cross, and wear shoes that have excellent traction on rocks.. Nice clean bathrooms. We did not wear masks on the trail but about 25% of the hikers we encountered did and they kept their distance from us. ‬

‪I just tackled Monadnock with friends over Labor Day Weekend. I loved every second of the climb, the views offered, and the occasional challenges along the way.

You’ll want to reserve parking ($15 at the time of writing) via their website. They have limited “first come first serve” parking spots, so it’s just best you reserve ahead of time. Bring sufficient water and/or sufficient water bottles to fill up outside of the restrooms. I had about 64 oz on me and felt good with that, but could’ve done with maybe another 32 oz myself.

The bathrooms are extremely clean for a state park bathroom and I’m glad the $15 parking charge is very obviously going towards the upkeep of the state park and it’s services.

On to the hike! We took the white dot trail up. I wouldn’t say I’m an experienced hiker, but I am a fitness enthusiast and I’m in good shape. Overall, the hike never felt impossible. There were some areas where you want to be mindful of footing, but with enough breaks I think the majority of people could accomplish the climb provided they have some experience. The first 25-30 mins were relatively easy and then it increases in difficulty when you begin dealing with rocky terrain. Foot placement is everything during some portions of the hike.

The views are truly incredible especially on a clear day. There are about 3-4 really good “outlook” stopping points - one, of course, being the summit. I’m excited to return during the foliage season as I can only imagine how much more breath-taking it will be.

We took white dot to white cross when we descended and that seemed to be the better decision. The white dot trail all the way would’ve been a little more challenging due to steepness and slipperiness going down and after climbing, the last thing you want is bad footing on the way down and getting hurt. My recommendation is taking the same white dot to cross trail down as we took.

Conclusion - it’s an incredible hike. It’ll be challenging, it’ll be fun, and you’ll definitely earn whatever snack or meal you bring to the summit (yes, bring some fuel food). ‬

‪If anyone thinks this is merely a hike and not mountain climbing, I am here to tell you that this is a mountain and if you wish to reach the top you must climb. I am 29 and 180 lbs. and not particularly in shape; although the hike was strenuous, I was able to do the White Dot Trail practically non-stop in 75 minutes. I am biased toward appreciating the mountains of New England so I declare that every step of the climb was worth not only the view at the top (and the wonderful wind) but also the beautiful forest and scrubby tree-line growth that you can only experience on mountains. My first climb up Monadnock but not likely my last.‬

‪Great moderately difficult hike. May be tough for beginners, as it is very steep. However, it is doable with frequent breaks. I always find the descent tougher on my legs. Very rocky trail with rocks that become extremely slippery when wet.
Reservations required during Covid. Clean bathrooms and maps available at the headquarters parking area. $5 per person fee to hike. Great work out that one can handle if they’re in decent physical shape and excersize at baseline.‬

‪We went not expecting this hike to be as terrible as it was. We have a 5 yr old and all the reading (I guess we missed a lot) we had done said the white dot and white cross are suitable for kids. With our daughter, it took us 4.5 hours. It was exhausting and people were everywhere, not wearing masks, sneezing and literally getting on top of you to push you out of the way. We were constantly moving aside and hardly anyone was nice, kind or patient. Overall, a terrible experience. The views were beautiful but not worth the hike at all.‬
