Great trail to ride in the fall for the changing leaves! Restrooms are few and far between. Make sure to visit the Danbury country store.

It was my sincere intention to fully enjoy the therapeutic value of hiking along the rail trails and solo camping along the way. I was SO excited, I was all prepared (over prepared actually) and had been planning this excursion for months. I didn't get very far, as fear basically paralyzed me the minute that I touched down at the trail.
For some reason ALL of the local ATV riders were hyper-aware of my presence and so they were recurrently, in unison, revving up their engines as loud as they possibly could, in some kind of a group signal regarding my being there, alone, hiking, not bothering anyone - but not about anyone else there hiking alone apparently. Just me.
How interesting.
My original plan was to stay much longer, hiking to the mountains in the North, but on day 2 I heard someone nailing something against a tree near my tent. When I came out of the tent the next day I saw that someone had nailed a NO TRESPASSING sign riddled with bullets near my camp. That was really kind of whoever felt that was appropriate.
On state park property. Really?
I have attached those photos of the lovely, bullet riddled sign that was meant for me specifically.
Thank you for your welcoming spirit New Hampshire. My visit wasn't traumatic at all.

LOVED THIS TRAIL! Did a 3 mile run and loved the rives, trees, path, everything about it! Highly recommend it for runners and bikers.

Rode 10+ miles from Potter Place to MP115. Nice hard pack gravel surface, nicely maintained but not a whole lot to see. Couple of ponds but no place to sit and enjoy the view. Slight grade going up but nice on the return.

Potters Place in Andover is a great place to start your bike or walk on the Northern Rail Trail. On the week-end May-Oct. you have the benefit of having the museum at the Rail Station & old Post Office open. But a quiet week day when they are closed, or a beautiful day "off season" you experience a lovely deserted quiet for taking pictures, looking through the windows , eating at one of the picnic tables, and just imagining the history of the area before or after your excursion on the Rail Trail.
Heading several miles towards Highland Lake is an easy, level, walk or bike ride of several miles. This section would be cool and shady in the summer, colorful in the fall, and in "off season" you have trail side views of marsh, river, well kept fields and occasional homes.
There are features for the whole family at various points on this section of the trail: at the edge of a large sand pit, there is a picnic table and sand pile with many small dump trucks and other toy machinery for kids to play with. Further along, there is a baseball field and playground beside the trail. There is a lovely old iron railroad trestle bridge, a covered bridge, and a horseshoe shaped pond to view. If you are hungry, follow the sign and wooded short cut to Pizza Chef for reasonably priced, very good pizzas, subs or pasta.
Depending on where you exit the trail and drive in your car, east of Proctor Academy on Rte 4 is Naughty Nellie's Ice Cream with a wide selection of choices and unusual flavors. There are many picnic tables and several Adirondack chairs where you can enjoy your ice cream outdoors.

We usually ride on country roads, having to be cautious of traffic at times. Lots of hills, ups and downs around the lakes. Great, but here was a change of pace. Flat, nice trail construction, good scenery, no getting lost, safe from cars, easy. This would be especially good for families. All ages from kids to grandparents. Great to take along a bike trailer with tots. Good workout since I didn’t have to give up at steep hills. Great for large groups since strong riders can go ahead and either wait or double back, no side trails to lose slower riders.

Until 1963 one could ride three times a day to Boston in a one-car Budd car, enjoying the scenery and the trees brushing up against the train. Now most of the former rail line is converted to a well-maintained gravel trail, the most used part of which is from Lebanon. Plants, including invasive plants, are marked along the way, and the users of the trail respect the right-of-way by not scattering litter in their wake. In this age of pandemic, almost everyone also wears masks and.keep the necessary distance. There's ample parking near the start of the trail in Lebanon. Compliments to the local organizations and the State of New Hampshire for so effectively converting the rail line to a use for the public good.

I have experience bike riding rail trails. This one gets a B+. Most of the trail is hard dirt with some areas of fine gravel. If you have a racing/road bike like me, you may have some minor issues with traction. Tires w/ some tread or a crossover bike probably works better but overall I was able to maneuver well enough. The trail is plenty long on the New Hampshire side. The Vermont side is just beginning to be constructed, although they did use some asphalt to make that part of the trail. Hopefully they'll decide to use more asphalt for the rest of the trail. The maps/info boards could have been better with info. Some of it was unclear as to where on the trail you were or how many miles you had ridden. Fortunately GPS helps. I only had time to ride 10 miles one way and back. Hopefully I'll get back here again.

We have ridden the entire Northern Rail Trail , and some sections more than once. In general the surface is good and the grades easy. There are some stretches in the southern section ghat are not very appealing, but for the most part the trail is very scenic. On our most recent outing we rode from Webster Lake in Franklin to Highland Lake in Andover. The section is completely wooded and not overly busy.

We're so lucky to have lots of rail trails to enjoy in the State of New Hampshire, and mostly we look for the ones that are paved (asphalt) since one of us uses a motorized wheelchair/scooter. But this section of the Northern Rail Trail of NH in Lebanon was some sort of deeply packed crushed stone and it worked just as well, so we were pleasantly surprised. The history behind this section of trail is quite interesting and the trail itself is very peaceful and beautiful, following along the Mascoma River for quite a ways. Definitely worth a visit.

Does anyone know current conditions in the Lebanon to Grafton area?
I've been intrigued with doing a century(ish) ride on gravel and am going to ride it out and back starting in Concord. Are there stores near the road crossings at suitable intervals where I can get food/drinks? Thanks in advance.

I can vouch that there are stores in Lebanon (the beginning), Enfield, Canaan, Grafton and Danville. I can't say past that.

there are many entry points. Such as Lebanon, Enfield, Canaan....
Try to access from Lebanon ( near CCBA) since it is the most maintained. The other entrance in Lebanon has known to have glass pieces and doesn't seem to be well maintained.
It is a great trail...make sure to go in Fall....spring....summer....snowy winter. It is just fantastic !
