The tour of the Zimmerman House and the nearby Kalil House-both designed by Frank Lloyd Wright-is arranged through the Currier. For anybody interested in architecture or Mid-Century Modern design, this is a must see tour.
An added plus: The docents were quite good.

The highlight of our day in Manchester. The two docents, Dorothy and Tamar, provided interesting information about the two houses, and did so in a non-pedantic manner. They were both great speakers; they provided time for individuals to explore on their own while making themselves available for questions. Make sure to purchase tickets in advance since the tours are often sold out. Don’t miss seeing these two houses! It is a rare opportunity to visit two Frank Lloyd Wright homes virtually next door to each other (actually 3 houses apart)

Don't expect to just walk into the Courier museum and expect to tour the Wright homes - reservations for the tour are needed and made well in advance. The event is well choreographed and designed. You start with a nice ride in their FLW mini bus with a well versed driver, and are greeted at the Zimmerman house by your docent. The tour traverses through the entire house and grounds, and our docent took questions along the way. Non-flash photography is permitted. Like most Wright homes, the owners became part of the story; the Zimmermans were no exception; their ashes have been interred in the back yard! After this tour, you are given the choice of walking a few homes down or taking the bus to the Kalil home - close friends of the Zimmermans. Both houses are ranches, but their building materials are completely different but both definitive Wright designs. Again, there's interesting stories to tell, one being how the house was donated to the museum by an anonymous source. This was excellent, two homes in one trip! The docent was excellent!

Absolutely well worth it! I waited years - decades ! - to visit this property and now I wonder why!! The tour is fantastic. - well-informed and friendly docents who struck a good balance between leading and leaving you on your own to explore. The property is amazing. If you have any admiration at all for Frank Lloyd Wright, this is a “don’t miss” !!

The Zimmerman house is a “Usonian” Frank Lloyd Wright house, unofficially meaning “very small,” with only 2 bedrooms and a great room and some hallways. It’s not as impressive as other Wright buildings, but this house in particular is integrated incredibly well with a verdant backyard garden and indoor plants. The original furnishings and decorative ceramics show what a wonderful space it was when occupied.
The house can only be toured through the Currier museum, which sends groups over on a bus to tour it and the nearby and somewhat ugly Kalil Usonian house. There are two docents and a museum guide, but the tour is unstructured and semi-self guided. The docents volunteer some information, but expect guest questions otherwise. It takes two hours to see two houses you could walk through in 10 minutes. I would like to either go self-guided or a typical room-by-room tour. There seems to be an assumption that guests know about Wright already (mostly true on my tour), and they aren’t sure how best to inform well-informed guests.

A group of three of us joined a larger group yesterday to visit both FLW homes in Manchester. We enjoyed ourselves very much and learned a great deal about FLW, his architectural approach, materials used, contractors, his relationships with the Zimmermans, etc. The guides were excellent, their passion for the homes infectious.
We were able to tour the grounds and see each of the houses. I guess it took a couple of hours, in total. You purchase tickets in advance, take a shuttle to the first house, walk or shuttle to the second house (3 doors down) and then take the shuttle back to the Currier museum, minutes away.
We were allowed to take pictures, just no flash photography.
I am not necessarily drawn to architecture or famous architects, but the tour expanded my knowledge and was quite fascinating.
After the tour, we spent some time at the Currier museum (free with tour tickets) and ate lunch at the museum cafe. The museum itself is very impressive!
The houses are not open in the winter, so plan accordingly.
Have Fun!

How exciting to find two Frank Lloyd Wright houses on the same street in Manchester. We were headed to the airport and decided we had to ride by and check them out. Both homes are located on Heather Street and are under the care of the Currier Museum of Art. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the first house for his friends, Dr. and Mrs. Isadore Zimmerman, in 1950 at 223 Heather Street. Wright was able to design a home around the natural rocks and features of New Hampshire. Though only 1,458-square feet, the built-in furniture, continuous concrete floor mat, large windows, and dramatic changes in ceiling height imparts a sense of great spaciousness. After Zimmerman died in 1988, the house was acquired by the museum.
The next home is called the Kalil House and is located at 117 Heather Street. It was built in 1955 for Dr. Toufic and Mildred Kalil. This is a completely different house than the Zimmerman House. We were happy to be able to see both homes, if only from the street. You need to contact the Currier Museum to arrange a tour.

We visited here today to see both of Frank Lloyd Wright designed properties in Manchester. The 1951 Zimmerman House is a pleasing Usonian style with its long shape and extended overhang for a carport while the 1955 Kalil House seems extreme with its bold modular concrete block.
Both are easily seen from the quiet high end Heather Street.

My husband and I have been to several FLW homes - Taliesin West, Falling Waters and the FLW "block" in Milwaukee. So remarkable and each different. A few years ago, we discovered this gem almost literally in our backyard; the Currier Museum had acquired the house in 1988 and offered small tours. This house is a splendid example of FLW's style and work and sits on a quiet, unassuming street. If you are staying in or around Manchester and have the slightest interest, put this on your list of "don't miss" places to visit.

How wheelchair friendly is the house? The tour?
HughDonovan
Bedford, New Hampshire54 مساهمة
Here is the information from the museum's website:
All tours of the Zimmerman House begin at the Museum and travel by van to the House. The van is equipped with a lift and can accommodate two wheelchairs.
Due to the intimate nature of the House, many rooms and passageways are very narrow. The maximum size for manual or power wheelchairs in the house is 30″ wide and 45″ at the longest point. If a visitor has a wheelchair larger than these dimensions and can safely transfer a 30″ by 45″ chair can do so at the museum before the tour begins. Please indicate this need upon registering for a tour. For those rooms that are not wheelchair accessible, photographs are available.
The following areas at the House are wheelchair accessible: carport, entry hallway toward the Garden Room, dining loggia, entrance to workspace, outdoor patio (weather permitting).
The following spaces are not wheelchair accessible: entry hallway toward guest room, workspace, master bedroom and bath, guest room and bath.

Hello BostonTyler1: Due to weather conditions and the need to conserve the Zimmerman House, it is closed to the public during winter. The last tour for the "year" will be on January 4. We restart again in the spring.
