This is almost across the street from Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro. You start with the fire house, move to the doctor's house, and end with a schoolhouse. The volunteers are very knowledgeable.

Nice community feel. Old fire house had a nice collection of 19th c pumper. House, one of the oldest in town, has a collection of 19th century furniture, clothing, dishes, etc. Old one room school house and barn. Behind it a green which was home to a farmers market. And it was a short walk from our B&B.

There is a wide variety of things to see with the most interesting for me being the early fire fighting equipment that was part of the local fire department.

This museum gave us a taste of what life was like in the early 1900s. Beautiful garden between the buildings.

We love to tour America and take in its historic locales. Wolfeboro is one of the best, and quietest, we've ever seen.

After nearly 10 years, I revisited this museum on a daytrip to Wolfeboro. It was just as well maintained by the Wolfeboro Historical Society as on the last visit.
The two guides gave excellent tours of the buildings.
The guide in the Monitor Engine Company Firehouse was very knowledgeable about the four pieces of Wolfeboro fire equipment from the 1800's plus the Amoskeag Steamer, a horse-drawn fire engine from Manchester. The latter was the most interesting because of its more complex functioning by a wood or coal-fired burner to convert water to steam which provided pressure for pumping water though the output hose. Its large red wheels added to its attractiveness. It was what I remembered most vividly from my last visit.
From the firehouse, I went to the Clark House where re-enactor Mark, a local teacher, led me through the rest of the tour.
The Clark House, built in 1778, came into the Clark family in 1817. Three generations of Clarks lived there in 100 years. In 1917, Greenleaf Clark donated the property with the stipulation that it was to be used as a living history museum. The home’s large rooms were well furnished in the earlier period. In the kitchen, there were many curiosities that included some Blue Willow pattern china, four different styles of butter churners, and kitchen gadgets of the day. The hearth and beehive oven were large enough to cook meals for The Clarks and their 10 children. The horsehair sofa was in good condition as was the grandfather clock. The built-in china closet contained some very pretty formal china.
Visitors are allowed to handle items while wearing white cloth gloves.
The Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse was a one-room schoolhouse from the early 1800’s ine the Pleasant Valley section of South Wolfeboro. It was interesting to note that the only desk belonged to the teacher. The students sat in rows of benches. And, of course, there was no indoor facility. I learned that there were once 15 schools in Wolfeboro and that each one had students of all ages from its neighborhood.
Mark showed me a photo book of a double wedding held at the schoolhouse in 1947. He recently wrote a newspaper article about a visit to the museum by the son of one the couples. I got a copy of the newspaper and read the article. It was very interesting.
Both guides provided insightful looks into the lives of The Clarks and other Wolfeboro citizens in the century from 1817 to 1917.
I highly recommend this attraction to anyone interested in history and/or old buildings.

Read somewhere allow minimum 30 minutes but we enjoyed it so much we spent 2 hours. Our 2 hour visit went past closing time and our friendly guide didn't rush us out at all. This was the first time I've been to an old house museum that I could go in every room and touch things. It was very interesting to learn what and how some of the objects were used for. We will be going back when they finish with the barn.

It's been years since we visited this site with our children. We were absolutely delighted with the very personal tour we received of both the firehouse and the home. We didn't have enough time to visit the school. The guide thrilled me when he invited our children to pet the horsehair chair. Wow, I thought, one could never do that in most historic homes where everything is cordoned off. I don't know if the Clark's guides still invite children to pet the furniture, but what an engaging, tactile way to present history! We visited late summer in probably 1990. Can't wait to take our grandchildren one day.
