I can't believe I've never been here up till now - what a beautiful experience to visit Van Vleck Gardens in Upper Montclair NJ.
My mother and I were en route to Presby Iris Gardens in Montclair, where we've been many times. We took a drive through Upper Montclair and were passing Van Vleck Gardens and decided to come here instead. Gorgeous 12 acres of flowers and edible gardens with many paths through a gated block nestled in between opulent Upper Montclair homes.
Really worth a visit. Can't wait to return.

We stopped by on a fall afternoon. To enter either of the two parking lots you need to pull up to the closed gates, which will then open for you to drive through. We first stopped in the visitor center which has rest rooms and picked up a map. Not entirely necessary, since the property isn't that large, but nice to have for an overall view. We were in luck because their annual Scarecrows in the Garden exhibit was underway. Members and organizations in the community create scarecrows and/or pumpkin figures which are displayed in an open field. We wandered around the many paths and walked around the outside of the mansion. It would be nice if the house was open for walking about but it is not. But for a free (donations welcome) activity it's rather nice.

Van Vleck house and Gardens are no admission fee. It is well maintained and good place to walk around

Let me preface by saying, my teen daughter looked for places to take pictures to post to Instagram. She stumbled upon the Van Vleck House and Gardens. I was immediately intrigued as I love learning about historical sites and how they came to be. The grounds are gorgeous. Simple yet a sample of the quiet life right off of Valley Road. I want to visit when everything is in bloom, especially the rhododendrons. I imagine they are simply beautiful. It is a non-profit, no entry fee. But they do have a box for donations which we gladly contributed to. You can bring a blanket and picnic on the grounds. One needs a permit to do formal photography.

We had planned to come here a few years back, and are glad that we finally got the chance to visit the beautiful property this month.
The Mansion built in 1916 with its Mediterranean Revival Architecture and a fabulous facade is not open to the public except for special events. But, the 6-acre Gardens are free to enter and were absolutely gorgeous, especially in this springtime with their abundance of Wisteria, Azaleas and Rhododendrons, and chock full of other pretty flowers. Everything was tastefully manicured and beautifully maintained, and we loved strolling around the woodland property among the flowers and shrubs of a variety of types and sizes, and in every color of the rainbow. It felt wonderful to be out-and-about after being cooped up during the pandemic, and whiling away some afternoon hours on a sunny and warm day taking in all that beauty. The 100-year old Wisteria draping the back porch over the Grecian columns was full of blooms, almost at its prime, and amazing. It is no wonder that this patio was a popular spot for people to pose for family and engagement pictures. We liked the fact that there were sunny and shady areas to alternate in- between our walk, and benches to sit on if we got tired.
There is a Visitor Center at the back of the house. It had a lot of information there with maps, brochures about their cell phone tours and extremely clean bathrooms. Certainly a nice touch for people who have come a distance away and want to know a little more about this place. Particularly liked the fact that most people were pleasant, and masked, even though the signs were changed from “required” to “recommended”.
It was such a perfect place for me as a photographer who is also a flower and garden enthusiast. We would love to visit this urban paradise again next year, and will also recommend it to friends and family.

I stopped by earlier today to get outside and enjoy the weather; such a nice space to soak in the trees and gardens; very clean and well kept. It’s the perfect place to observe lovely gardens, catch some sun or shade and reflect. Would definitely return or recommend

Well-maintained, super clean and super-informative!.
We loved the cell phone info stops along the pathways. A wonderful place to stroll post-Sunday brunch year round.
These gardens depend on their members.
We will be supporting this non-profit.

I have driven by this multiple times and didn’t know it was free to the public. It’s a beautiful garden with a multitude of beautiful plants. Very relaxing and tranquil. I recommend it highly

Never realized how large the property was. Not to many flowers, but the green lush landscape makes up for it. Everything is marked to read or you can have a description told to you over your phone. There is no fee, but they do take donations. Can't wait to go back in the spring to see the Wisteria on the house.

Are there areas that can be reserved for events? I would like to plan a post wedding brunch.

When we went, the house was not open for touring. One certainly could take all the photos they want outside. I don’t know about inside.
