‪The Easton Tower is the flagship landmark on the Saddle River walking path (not a park). It's a relic of Bergen County's very rich history.‬

‪It's more of a hiking trail rather than a park. There's the tower in the middle of the park and another trail the leads towards further on.‬

‪You can start your visit with a free cell phone audio tour. It lasts under three minutes, and it gives some interesting information about the history of the tower. According to the audio tour:

In 1899 Edward Easton bought 48 acres of land where the Red Mill (a grain mill) once stood. Easton was the founder of the Columbia Phonograph Company (known today as Columbia Records). This parcel of land was just the right distance from New York City for a country retreat for Easton and his family. He created a landscaped park around his home with elaborate gardens and ponds, and he named it Arcola after a small town in Italy. He later commissioned the construction of the tower, which was used to pump water to several fountains that irrigated and decorated his estate. The park attracted many people, who would stroll around, go for boat rides, and ice skate there in the winter. The park was used as an early setting for silent films when Fort Lee was new center of the film industry at that time. The park and tower appeared on many postcards of the time. When Route 208 was connected with Route 4 in 1931, which gave many people access to the George Washington Bridge, the construction destroyed many sections of the park. The only remaining part of Easton’s estate is the tower, which was bought by the county in 1956. It was placed on state and national registers of historic places after it was restored in 2008 by the county. (end of audio tour information)

The tower is next to Saddle River, which is the size of a creek here. It is nestled among trees and bushes, and if you didn’t know it was there it is likely you would drive right past it. It is surrounded by a small piece of land containing a path that is actually one segment of Saddle River Pathway, a 7.6-mile pedestrian and biking trail that runs from the Wild Duck Pond Area in Ridgewood at the north end to Railroad Avenue in Rochelle Park at the south end.

I was here for a little less than a half-hour, and in that time I passed probably 15-20 people who were biking, walking, or jogging. When I was getting into my car to leave, another car pulled up and out came an adult woman and four teenage girls. Clearly the place is popular with the locals. It helped that today was a perfect day to be outside: sunny and 84 degrees.

While the tower itself is interesting, sadly it has been marred by delinquents who have painted portions of the base with graffiti and carved things into the wooden waterwheel.

You can enter the tower at its base, but there is nothing inside it. What remains of the tower is just a hollow structure with a roof.

There is only one way to (safely) enter the parking lot for the tower. You have to drive south on Paramus Road at Route 4, then turn right onto Red Mill Road and then immediately right again into the parking lot. If you take the Saddle River Road exit from Route 4 east and then turn left onto Red Mill Road, there is a concrete island that blocks the entrance to the parking lot.

The parking lot can hold about 20 cars, although the striping that marks the spaces has largely worn away.

There are no formal visiting hours other than the fact that the park closes ½ hour after dark. There are also no benches or tables in the area. The only place you can sit is on the small stone wall that surrounds portions of the tower.

If my review was helpful to you, please consider clicking the thumbs-up button. Thank you!‬

‪Saw the tower while walking along Saddle River County Park path. Just keep walking along the path to get to it. A little eerie when passing under Route 4. Good place to sit and rest along the way. People have probably passed by many times but never stoped to check it out. Rumor has it the tower's haunted!‬

‪Don't forget to stop by the Easton Tower when going under Rt. 4 on the Saddle River Bike Path. It is a testament to our entrepreneurial past and a solid structure of timeless engineering. ‬

‪Having stopped to catch our breaths after a long arduous bike ride at this tower I was wondering what all the hype about this being haunted... ok I love a good ghost story as much as the next person but was a little puzzled after sitting there for about 45 mins water break and ..... BOO!! Nothing... oh well fun flirting with the folklore just the same.. ‬

‪I'm not sure how old this structure is, but it has remained untouched for as long as I have lived around here, which is nearly 45 years.‬

‪It is easy to miss the Easton Tower that is located behind the Garden State Plaza Mall and next to two highway. It is hidden on a off beat road that has since been cut off from the rest of the park by progress.

The Easton Tower is a picturesque water tower that was used for pumping water on a private estate that the tower was once part of and is located on the Saddle River bike path on the edge of the river.

The tower is not in the greatest shape but still interesting if you like local culture and historical sites in the area. It is interesting to look at the architecture and see how the tower and mill once pumped water to various fountains on the estate. It was also the site of the 'Red Mill', which was once used by the Dutch as a power source.

Take the time out and watch for the directions as it is a quick turn on the road to get there but it is well worth it. On a beautiful day, take some time to walk the Saddle River biking path along the river. It is really beautiful.‬
