I was fortunate to see the rare black necked cranes Late February this year. Watching the birds gracefully just be in the valley was a special experience.
The peace and solace in Phobjikha is incomparable!

After breakfast, walk along Gangtey Nature Trail, crossing streams, pine trees, and villages. As the black-necked crane flew over me, I felt so blessed. Stunning views of the entire Phobjikha Valley. Attend the evening chanting of 300 monks at Gangtey Monastery.
When in season, watch cranes from the deck using binoculars at the Crane Information Center

Bhutan is one of the most unique places to visit on the planet bcoz is the first country to adopt happiness as a measure of success and this does translate in every aspect. Phobjikha valley excellent destination for those who love to enjoy nature at its best - peaceful - serene-green & the happiest people around. So serene so untouched and beautiful. Once your feet touches the ground you just know you are in a very peaceful place, No hustle and bustle. Its known for black crane visit in winter from Tibet plateau. The crane festival held in November at gangtey monastery . It was full of glaciers in December to February and remain closed. It was full of rhododendrons flowers in may-june. From thimphu travelling to Dochula pass, Gangtey monasteries, black craned centre, stayed at home stay Wangchuk lodge in phobjikha valley.

We stayed in Gangtey and walked this valley one day. There are beautiful views, and we were there when the Black necked cranes were still in residence. A visit to the Crane centre is a must in season, but it also gives a good summary of life in the valley. Being at altitude, it can be quite cool in the winter.

Phobjikha valley is one of the lesser known attractions of Bhutan but a must do when one is planning a trip to the dragon country. Gazing at the scenic beauty and taking the long trekking paths are the main attractions. The serenity and beauty of this place is addictive. Do include this location in your itinerary when travelling to Bhutan.

A nice beautiful place with culture plus nature. Travellers should not make noise and should respect the local culture of Buddhism i.e wearing a polite dress in a temple (no trekking pants; no shoes; no forbidden manners) not taking a photograph when people praying.

Beautiful valley for hiking. Bonus is seeing the back neck cranes that roost here in the winter. Stayed at a farm house in Mole and highly recommend this experience. Enjoy day hikes in the region and relax with a hot stone bath.

This was a highlight for me. The hikes in and around the valley are exceptional. Having the Black Necked Cranes just a stone's through away was amazing. The scenery was beautiful and my only regret is that I didnt stay longer.
If you are unguided then please make sure you dont wander into the reserve area where the Cranes reside. My guide had to reprimand some unguided tourists who were venturing too close to the cranes.

After the Black Crane Festival at the Gangtey Gonpa, we trekked to the Phobjika Valley. The walk took us through a village, a stream, and a Pine Tree forest before opening into a clearing from where we spotted several black cranes. The air was crisp and the walk very refreshing. Beautiful sights all around. Though it took two hours, didn’t feel one bit tired.

Went to Phobjikha and did the nature trail. It’s an easy 2 hour walk, but it sure is pretty. I was blown away by the view of the valley at the view point.

Hi ! I'm going to Bhutan this November with my family. It is a 7 day 6 nights trip. We are a group of 8 people and I really want to visit Phobjikha valley. Is it possible to stay at Punakha and do Phobjikha valley sightseeing for a whole day and return back to Punakha...Or it is better to stay at phobjikha for 1 night.
PS. We cant afford more than 1 night stay at Punakha

Hi, Phobjikha Valley is itself very beautiful. You can get a feeling of being in Switzerland if you stay in Phobjikha for a night. There are many farmstays offering night-stays in Phobjikha.
If you start from Thimphu you require some time to reach Punakha (as you would like to spend some time in Dochula Pass on the way) so by the time you reach Punakha and complete Punakha sight-seeing it will be evening. So if you plan to stay for just 1 night in Punakha you cannot do Phobjikha Valley. However if you stay for 2 nights in Punakha then on the second day you can visit Phobjikha Valley and return back to Punakha. Else staying at Phobjikha Valley would be better.

If you have 7 nights, then you can keep your itinerary like this.
Thimpu - 2 Nights
Phobjikha - 1 N
Punakha - 1N
Paro - 3 N ( including Haa valley , Chelle la excursion with additional 1 day for Tigers Nest)
I completed this recently. Let me know if you need any further information.

I'm visiting Gangtey valley in a week (11/11) and a bit struggling to decide whether to pack a thick down jacket just for that two days, as the rest of the trip seems to have higher temperature. Anyone has experience with weather in Gangtey in mid Nov. please help me!! Many thanks!

2) Is it possible to get hotel at Phobjikha without advance booking in the said period?
3) Do mobiles work in Phobjikha?
3) Can I get phone number of Dewachen hotel, Nga Yapling Farm Stay?
Thanks in advance!

1.From Phobjika I stayed gakling guest house and its a budget resort ....budget is affordable for middle class family .But the think is phobjika is a remote area there is nothing available for entertainment inside the rooms eg: Wi-Fi, tv,24 hour electricity , mid time snacks etc. .So brink some mid time snacks because there is no shops or cafeteria's available near this place. If your in thimphu I will recommend you Dorji Elements for stay and we can get typical Kerala or Indian tasted curry's in same flavours and aroma.
2.Of course you can reach phobjika within 4 hours from thimphu if the road work is still going and its depends on month you prefer for your trip. better start your trip from thimphu early morning then you can reach phobjika before lunch. If your trying for mounting like activity's it will take time otherwise its possible to complete sit seen with in half day.

Can you recommend a place to spend a night in Pobjikha. It should not be too expensive but at the same time comfortable. Planning a visit in Feb 2018.

Dear fellow traveller, we had not stayed at Phobjikha valley and preferred to do a day trip from Punakha. However while considering hotel options we had shortlisted Dewachen Hotel & Dragons Nest Hotel which we felt were reasonable. Have a great holiday in Bhutan !!!

Phobjikha or Bumthang?
So the classic dilemma. I can either do Bumthang or Phobjika. Also Bumthang comes with one full day(almost) gone with a 7 hr drive from Punakha to Bumthang and then I opt to fly to Paro while returning (which costs around USD170 :( )
or
I could spend more time at locations and include Pobjika in my itinerary.
Anyone who has visited both and have any suggestions. I read some really good things about Bumthang but lack of days and hectic itinerary makes me unsure of whether I want to include Bumthang.
If you are curious. Below are the two alternatives.Any thoughts?
8th Paro - Thimpu. Reach late evening
9 - Thimpu
10 Thimpu - Punakha (3 hrs drive)
11 Punakha
12 Punakha to Bumthang (7 hrs drive)
13 Bumthang
14 Bumthang to Paro (flight)
15 Haa Valley (1 day trip)
16 Paro
17 Tigers Nest
18 Depart from Paro
OR
8th Paro - Thimpu. Reach late evening
9 - Thimpu
10 Thimpu - Pobjika (5 hrs drive)
11 Pobjika
12 Pobjika to Punakha (4 hrs drive)
13 Punakha
14 Punakha to Haa Valley (5 hours drive) overnight at Haa
15 Haa Valley to Paro (2 hours drive)
16 Paro
17 Tigers Nest Hike
18 Leave early morning

Firstly sorry for the late reply, don't know if u still require an answer!Anyways, its absolutely OK if u r going to drive yr own car up to Phobjikha valley, not a problem! It being a restricted area, have to get yr permit for the said place from Phuentsholing, hence register yr own vehicle for the said journey there itself and u r done. Road condition is very bad, hence have to b careful to drive and it will take about 6 hrs approx from Thimphu.
