The museum was closed when we were there in May (earlier in day). We did the 1 mile walk from the museum to the aqueduct. The thing we didn't know was that you could drive down to the aqueduct. If you want to see the aqueduct, recommend driving down as opposed to taking the walk.

We stopped by in July 2020 but the museum and general store were closed due to Covid. We walked along the canal a bit and looked at the artifacts that were stored next to the canal. Many people out walking along the canal as a walking path/dog walkers/ bikers. You get the feel of the old canal tow path at this site and can almost see the mule Sal, fifteen miles on the Erie Canal.

It's springtime and walking a stretch if the Erie Canal in Camillus, NY. Trees are budding, spring flowers in bloom and a few early fishermen. Springtime is a great time.

We became members even though we live in Cape Vincent which is 1.5 hour away. We figured it will make us get out shopping more! Hopefully the membership pays off for us. It is a great store!

This stretch of the Erie Canal is a real beauty. The aqueduct is built over top of Nine Mile Creek and is an engineering marvel considering it was built in the 1820's. We walk here often as it is a flat hike. Many people enjoy this park including hikers, bikers, kayaking, fishing joggers and snowmobiles. A general store is open sometimes as are canal cruises.

My wife and I walked the canal trail last weekend. The town of Camillus has done a nice job of bringing the aqueduct back to life, it look nice. The train is nice for walking, jogging and sightseeing.

This little park has a piece of the 1842 Erie Canal with water and a reconstructed aqueduct accessed by a short walk along the original tow path. Walking on the path is the same pace as the original boat travel behind mules. A short walk on a nature trail takes you to a piece of the original hand dug Erie Canal ditch from 2 centuries ago. It is overgrown but the contours are clearly visible with wooden posts to show the bottom and banks.

This abandoned section of the original canal is quiet and relaxing, with walking along the towpath on each side. You get a real sense of the effort involved and how it felt to travel the canal- this is the halfway point between Albany and Buffalo. The general store was not open the day we dropped in, but photos show how it used to look. Check their website, they sometimes offer boat rides. There is an interesting aqueduct a mile up the canal- a water filled bridge where the canal crosses over a creek.
This locally maintained park is not well marked and hard to find; from the center of town take Newport St north past Rt 5, then turn right opposite the fire station. It’s a short distance up that road.

I’ve biked from Warner’s Road to Jordan And back. Also walked the same. Good trails, things to see along the way. Just didn’t like the sketchy skiing on it in the winter because people walked on the trails.

The Sims Store/Museum is interesting, but it was a gorgeous day and I decided to take the mile-long walk to the restored aqueduct. The dense brush gave an idea of what a stupendous accomplishment the 1817-era canal was, as workers cut the channel through wilderness. The aqueduct, which carries the canal over Nine Mile Creek, was lovingly restored to original specs--despite the fact that most of that restoration is now underwater, as the aqueduct is full of water.

I'm not sure, there is how-ever the Camillus Kayak shop just a few minutes away. - camilluskayak
They rent kayaks, but they do it at Willow Bay - Onondaga Lake.
Call and ask, have fun ! The canal is a nice ride in a kayak or other watercraft, enjoy !

Hello - No not at this location, how-ever the sunflower "field" hillside is within about a 5-8 minute drive from the canal park. When you google sunflower field Camillus you will get several results. Good luck have fun - thanks for visiting !
