Grounds are beautiful. Didn’t know that the mansion tours sell out so quickly. We went to this area specifically to take a mansion tour. You can’t purchase the tours online, just tickets for the museum. I was very disappointed that there were no tours available. They said that they sell out quickly. The grounds were beautiful, museum was ok. Disappointed that they were setting up for several events. So, that distracted from taking nice photos of the mansion.

The Birdwatch, Architecture Tour of Vanderbilt Estate Grounds with the museum's curator, Paul, was outstanding. This early morning tour is led by a knowledgeable, enthusiastic field expert who engages each group member, regardless of their birding expertise. He masterfully blended the history of the museum's architecture and bird watching into a fascinating story of the long ago Vanderbilts who inhabited this estate.
We never tire of visiting this spectacular gem in Centerport, NY. Seeing it during the early morning with the museum's curator made it even more special. If you cannot go on the early morning tour, I would recommend visiting during regular hours. The views, house, and museum are incredible.
Note: The museum does remind visitors to wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes. However, it is a slow paced walk and one does not feel rushed to "keep up" with the group.

The Mansion tour was wonderful. Our tour guide, Paul, was so knowledgeable and informative as well as entertaining. The house is just amazing, there are so many things to see and learn. Each room was more interesting than the last. The collections of Mr. Vanderbilt were vast, it is great that they can be shared. The grounds are so nice and well kept. Came back in the evening, which we really enjoyed. Great narration.

This museum was NOT accessible! My mom has a walker and found getting around on the cobblestones very difficult with her walker. Most of the mansion was not accessible, no elevator, no ramps ect. We paid full ticket price but was only able to see very little.
Very disappointed!

If you’re coming from NYC, it can be a long haul. It’s only about 40 miles, but traffic on the Friday afternoon that I went was brutal, and it took an hour and a half to get there.
That being said, it’s a beautiful estate with amazing panoramic views of Long Island Sound. Great photo opportunities, unique architecture.
The mansion (the Vanderbilts called it a cottage and you can’t take photos inside) is full of unique artifacts/decor. Tile from Portugal. Paneling from an English manor. Antique furniture. Lavish baths.
Our guide, Margaret, was very informative. Lots of interesting facts and drama surrounding this family! Volunteers are very helpful as well. Brian helped me find my way around and made sure I had cold water on a hot day.
General admission to the grounds was around 10 dollars and the mansion tour was 6 dollars. There is a planetarium on site, as well as collections of taxidermy and wildlife specimens that the Vanderbilts collected on their travels. Our guide told us that Vanderbilt always intended this home to become a museum after his death, so he prepared it like one during his life.

My wife and I bought our senior tickets online($9.36) and were permitted to enter the grounds 15 minutes prior to the 11AM opening. After inspecting the closed 1971 Planetarium, we walked down to the 1910-1936 mansion, moving from his personal collections of shells, fish, Papua New Guinea artifacts and hunting trophies from Africa. The extended house sits high above Northport Bay with views to the Long Island Sound. Then we walked up, passing the closed Carriage House, on the way to the 1922 Marine Museum, a one room display of 1000’s of fish collected from around the world. I liked the 2000 lb. ray caught in the Bahamas. Excellent 1+ hour visit.

On March 13 the Museum had already been shuttered for fears of the Coronavirus. We did get to walk the grounds are they are beautiful. Views of Northport Harbor and Long Island Sound clear to Connecticut.

Living locally, this is a favorite spot to bring kids and visitors. The house and grounds are beautiful and the planetarium is good. Seats are comfortable and the technology is fairly up to date. Shows change and there is a range of age level interest from young (animated components) to adult. I would actually give the facility a 4 star rating.
Unfortunately the show we attended there recently was a 70's sort of pretentious ego trip by an artist coordinating repetitious projections of elaborate, kaleidoscope like designs- celestial, architectural, natural backed up with new age muzak. What was that? A hypnotic voiceover declaring the amazing ,limitless human mind . Pass the shrooms...
The regular planetarium shows are a bargain at around $10. This thing cost $29. not worth it but it was a full house, so it might come around again. See"The Death of a Star" instead much better!

Stephanie,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. We always welcome feedback from our visitors. You had some very nice things to say about our facilities and programing, and we appreciate the support!
As you noted in your review, the theater was full for the Mesmerica show. Audiences have a desire to see a show like that, and providing that opportunity helps support the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum's other educational and historical programing. The show does not interfere with our regular planetarium shows, so there are still plenty of options available for anyone who is interested.
Thanks again for your feedback, and we hope to see you back for one of our other shows in the Reichert Planetarium.

This is a small but well done place. It has been upgraded since I was last there and it is now excellent. The seats are comfortable and the staff was friendly and nice. We enjoyed the many displays and the small gift store.

Vanderbilt Museum light show trip on February 2, 2019
Constellation and "Queen' Light Show evening presentation
At desk, we met Marisa the Manager and Charlie the Console Operator. Charlie was wonderfully informative, friendly and assisting with getting us to our seats. The Consolations program seemed pretty much the same to my memory from years ago. But how much can that change?
We did sit somewhat near Charlie who did the speaking and was the presenter of the Constellations show. Some of us had trouble hearing him clearly even though there were speakers causing partial problems of clarity in the words from volume and hearing feedback.
The light show had the music of "Queen". It seemed to me that some of the lighting did not quite match the song beats. But overall it was colorful and entertaining as my sister who sat in the row just in front of me conducted along to some of the songs. Though it might have been a popular song, I had not recalled the one about the bicycle.
The building outside seemed adequately lit, the structures as the wire horse, plaque, Gravity balls unit and Space Weight Station all were interesting.
If you are looking for a unique thing to do this is a nice thing to add to your list if you are near or willing to drive out East. Checking their web site to see what other up and coming performances being presented that might interest you may help you find a fun somewhat different thing to do to add to your list of activities. If you have not seen or not seen for a long time the presentation of the stars, it might be worth both the performances the same night.
Note: The presentation takes place in a Dome with much movement. Those who tend to get motion sickness-this could set it off. Staring at one spot helps some, or maybe motion bracelets and or a medication to prevent it, put on before you go.

Thank you very much for the very thorough review Mindy! We always appreciate feedback from our visitors. We do change the content of the 8 pm show, which is called either Long Island Skies, or Night Sky, Live! depending on the season. Also, there is a show at 9 pm that starts with what we call a star talk, an abbreviated version of the 8 pm show, and then plays one of our full-dome feature films. Those films change on a regular basis. Right now our 9 pm show is about the connection between the winter night sky and the holiday season. In January, that 9 pm show will change to one film on a fictional mission to Mars, and another about the Apollo missions. Also, our laser light shows at 10 pm change as well. Right now, for example, Laser Pink Floyd and Laser Elton John are playing. In January we will add Laser Bowie to the lineup. SO! we do change our shows regularly, and hope you come back to see another one some time soon! Make sure to check out the website for the most up to date information!
Cheers!

You're not allowed to take photos inside the Mansion, but you're free to take photos of the exterior and the grounds. There was no fee when I went there.
I've seen some photos of the inside, so I guess some people break the rules (tsk, tsk!).

Hi, will I be able to take my stroller? Its a jogger so I'm not worried about the cobblestones, but can it go inside the planetarium and the museum?
Thank you for your question! Yes, you can bring the stroller into the Museums and the Planetarium. However, please be aware that the stroller cannot go inside the theater with you if you choose to see a planetarium show. Fire safety laws prohibit it. Unfortunately, the stroller cannot be taken on a tour of the Mansion either, as there are several flights of stairs the tour must climb and descend. We do not recommend the Mansion tour for young children. However, you are free to bring the stroller with you into all of the other museums, including the Memorial Wing, the Marine Museum, the Nursery Wing, and the Habitat and Stoll Wing. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us by phone or email.
I would like to know how long is the planetarium show? And what time it starts on weekends? Thank you.

Usually the shows last about an hour....for time schedules, I would recommend that you visit their website..{.I installed the website link but posting guidelines prevent me from doing so when I clicked answer } ...once you are on their site, click the Planetarium link, then show schedule for details....

Hi. No you may not take any photos inside the mansion. I was told that the flash from your camera or phone , over time will harm the items inside the mansion. However outside you may take as many photos as you wish.
