A little local gem that showcases western and indigenous art of North America. Also offers new contemporary exhibitions along with featuring works from a diverse collection.

It's not a world famous art museum and most people don't realize it exists, but if you're in Corning, it's totally worth to check out what they have going on. A Frida Kahlo exhibit coupled with their impressive southwestern collection made this well worth a small chunk of our afternoon. Compared to the other museum in town, it's a short visit, but still very much worth the stop.
We stayed at the Radisson which was literally one block over from The Rockwell and just in front of Market Street, so it was very conveniently located for us.

This smaller museum, but still three stories, in the former City Hall and Fire Station is excellent. We went specifically for the Frieda Kahlo exhibit. It is actually a collection of photos of her and some photos of correspondence.
The photos are by Nicholas Murray and give us an intimate look at her and their relationship.
The rest of the displays focused on native art. There are some fantastic historical and contemporary pieces.
The museum offers an audio app you access via a QR code. A description of the work and artist makes the experience extra special.
There is also an art cart with activates for youngsters - or adults!
Restrooms are available. There is a gift shop with many wonderful items. There is a patio area. No smoking, please. Photos are allowed in some galleries. There is free parking behind the museum.

We went specifically for the Frieda Kahlo photography exhibition, which was excellent. The rest of the museum had very nice pieces as well. It’s small enough to not be exhausting. They have a very nice gift shop. Parking lot is around the back.

Very nice little museum. We purchased a combination ticket with the Corning Glass Museum and there is a shuttle bus to and from each of them. The Rockwell focuses on Southwestern art including Native American. In fact, the special exhibit featured was of sculptures from Michael Naranjo, a Native American sculptor who was blinded while serving in Vietnam. Small gift shop as you walk in. Very friendly staff. A nice quiet museum to spend your morning or afternoon in.

This was a delightful museum full of western art. I absolutely loved all the pieces by Remington and The Cowboy Artist, Charles Russell. The works of Michael Naranjo were on display to be touched! Wendy Red Star had a large selection of pieces as well. Another of my favorites were all the intricate bead work pieces done by Native Americans. The building was originally a fire station. The large windows in the front were the bays for the fire trucks. In one of the gift shop pictures if you look at the corner of the ceiling, you’ll see a circle where the pole used to be for the firemen to slide down. I also loved on the outside front, the Buffalo bursting through the building!

We didn't realize until we got to the Corning Welcome Center that there was a shuttle that goes between the Rockwell museum and the Corning Glass Museum. The combination ticket was perfect - we had plenty of time to see both locations, and eat at the cafe. Absolutely loved the exhibits and the building. Definitely recommend.

We had a few extra hours in Corning and decided to dip in to see this small museum focused on Native American art and culture. We are really glad we did. It had wonderful historical artifacts that you'd expect at a Smithsonian related museum, but it also displayed contemporary art by Native Americans as well as art by other marginalized populations. It also juxtaposes the art created by artists of European background that depicted Native Americans, like the Hudson Valley School and some of the 19th and early 20th century western artists. The way all this was curated and displayed was very rich, creating links and parallels and contextualizing the art. This museum is worth a couple of hours of your time.

Hi there,
There is a parking lot free for our visitors, located directly behind the museum. We do a bus lane, and if it is open you are free to use it! Corning Musem of Glass also has ample parking, and there is a free shuttle that runs between both museums.

What is the name of the piece depicting an Indian on a horse, looking up at the heavens with arms outstretched? Also, who was the artist?

That piece is called "Appeal To The Great Spirit" - it is a very famous depiction by Cyrus Dallin.
