‪Interesting Place to Walk in the City‬
أكتوبر 2021
‪I have lived in Cortland for over 45 years, and until about a month ago I had never walked into the cemetery. The cemetery is touched on 2 sides by SUNY Cortland (the school I graduated from), and in the front by Tompkins Street. It is over 160 years old, and has about 44 acres.
I walk daily, and one day I stopped by just to walk thru. So many names that I have heard about that are central to the story of Cortland. I noticed that there were really informative signs randomly that students at the college had created. It speaks of the famous people buried in that area, information about the types of stones used, etc. I ran out of time that day-but did return on a later day to follow all 22 signs (they aren't exactly spaced easily to find) in about 3 hours. I found it really fascinating to learn the history.
I have visited many cemeteries while traveling. This isn't really one of those. This is interesting, but more so to locals who would know all the names (Wickwire, Randall, Willcox, etc) It is, however, a gorgeous place to walk all seasons for a nice view of the hills surrounding Cortland!‬

‪Cemetery tours?‬
زوجان • يوليو 2018
‪My husband's family are buried in this cemetery, and it has been a while since we stopped in. I was quite surprised to see large signs along the roadway, and I didn't realize what they were until we stopped at our destination and I began reading them. They appeared to be part of a self-guided tour of the cemetery, featuring early settlers of Cortland, some interesting facts about monuments in general, and various types of artwork to be found thereon. Although we did not take the time to read them all, I enjoyed learning a bit more about the Cortland area.‬

‪Not like it used to be...‬
العائلة • يونيو 2018
‪I stopped by the cemetery a few weeks ago..it was my first time back to it since my Dad passed away 14 yrs. ago and I was a little disappointed with the upkeep of it. I remember visiting loved ones many years ago and it always looked so nice, but this time it was different. It was the week after Memorial day and my Dad was a Vet. But, I didn't see a flag on his grave like a lot of the other Veterans graves. One pleasant surprise was we saw a lot of little animals roaming the area and it did look so peaceful. Due to life issues I wasn't able to get back there sooner, but I do hope to visit again before the snow falls over there and have more time to take care of my parents graves.‬

‪It's a cemetery‬
العائلة • فبراير 2018
‪My niece had to go to Cortland this weekend for an interview. While driving we passed this cemetery. It's a cemetery and there is not much to really look at.‬

‪Beautiful Grounds ‬
الأصدقاء • يوليو 2017
‪My friend and i decided to visit here before heading to the 1890's house down the street. The grounds are beautiful, the rolling hills of green grass, the trees here and there... some graves had fresh flowers planted (thankfully fake flowers are prohibited). The monuments and statues are breath taking in their detail. Their are helpful stands with information about the graves dispersed throughout which helps to make the experience more personal as you learn about those buried there. I wish we could've viewed all of the grounds but it started to pour so we had to leave. ‬

‪They take good care of my family‬
بمفردك • سبتمبر 2016
‪My cousin and uncle are interned here in a beautiful spot overlooking the SUNY campus where my uncle had started his career 50 years ago.

It is a nice place to pay your respects and they take good care of the property. For a cemetery, it is a nice place to visit with its scenic views and old paths. I try to pay my respects when I am in the area.‬

‪Interesting old grave markers, well-groomed trails to walk‬
بمفردك • يوليو 2016
‪It's a great and quiet place to walk or to run, as well as a neat place for examining grave markers and old-style memorials. It isn't all history, though, as there are funeral processions occasionally visible on the grounds. Be respectful of modern mourners, if you're here for history, for sight-seeing, or just for a shady graveled walking path.‬

‪Beautiful, historic self-guided tour material and markers‬
الأصدقاء • يونيو 2016
‪Cortland Rural Cemetery is a vibrant resource for Cortland and New York State history. It's beautiful and provides many resources for exploring and learning: self-guided tour map, educational signs about historic "residents", a broad variety of trees--many marked by species. CRC encourages walking and exploring throughout the cemetery and it's a fascinating place to do just that!.‬
