Clean facility. Enthusiastic docents. ( they were available but not under our feet. We felt free to enjoy the displays without standing and listening). All docents wore masks which we appreciated.
Brockway truck museum was awesome.
The Homeville museum was alright. And the history museum had many great sections: we enjoyed the war and military displays most. Our only criticism was that displays within the history section didn’t always follow a reasonable order chronologically.
Their gift shop was nice. Overall a gem for the region. Oh, and reasonably priced too.

The center is composed of three separate museums: The Homeville Museum dealing with history of wars the U.S.was involved in-civil war, WW 1 & WW 11, Vietnam & Gulf Wars- the history of Cortland residences, Brockway Museum-trucks & the Tractors of Yesterday. Since Homeville has the largest exhibit will start here first. Was told there are over 10,000 items on display or in storage.
Items are displayed in glass cases or exhibited in the open. My visited started with the 1991 Gulf War working into Korea in the mid-late 1950's, Japanese army to the Axis Powers of WW 11. A ww 1 exhibit includes a 1912 Ford Model T Express Military Vehicle. From the Ford is a replica of a French trench, After the trench are conditions encountered-diseases, rats, trench foot, body lice & fevers, not a healthy living environment.
One wall is half covered with american flags from the colonial period up to the present time. Sanding in front of the flags are mannequins-female/man- wearing uniforms of the U.S. army, navy & marines of the WW 11 period.
The civil war is represented with two small howitzers, cases of both south & north items-clothing, weapons & every day life necessaries. Also the role of the Union Africa-American troop's contribution. Next door is President Linclon's Emancipation Proclamation along with a photo P. Linclon at Gettysburg-A Place To Remember.
Small exhibits are the New York State troops stated in 1917 up the present, along with a video of still photos. Also the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack & the Cortland Fire Department.
One wall has a full size replica of just the 1952 front end of locomotive #2107, which children are allowed to sit or stand for a photo. Next to the locomotive is a large model train set. Can't say how many trains are operational. Under the Baggage Town wall are a number of model locomotives, passenger & box cars. Also shelves of model Lionel trains.
For seating are a number of chairs, the largest seat is a double sided early 1990's bench from the Homeville Station. Each exhibit is detailed in the open or case.
The Brockway Museum is two levels, just three Brockway 1800's horse drawn carriages/buggies. The ground floor has eleven vehicles:
1. 1914 Brockway Model 6.
2. 1922 Brockway Model 6-a barn find.
3. 1925 Brockway Model 6-delivery truck.
4. 1937 Brockway Model 8-Flatbed.
5. 1964 Brockway 257 cab.
6. 1977 Brockway Dump Truck.
7. 1975 Brockway Leach.
8. 1925 Brockway Fire truck from Argentina.
9. 1974 Brockway Demonstrator Fire Truck.
10. 1926 Brockway torpedo Fire Truck.
11. 1972 Brockway K360 cab.
Besides the trucks are five engines.
The Tractors Of Yesterday-That might be of Yesteryear.
Each year a different theme is experienced. This year is Orphans: Odd Balls. An odd ball is a tractor that was only manufactured for one or two years. Of fifteen tractors only knew of two brands. Each tractor seat is occupied with a large stuffed animal, which is not for show, but for a function which is to keep children from climbing onto the tractor's seat.
Besides the tractors are some early 1900's farm equipment which are an Ellis Key Stone Stationary Barn Thresher, Burr Millor Grinder & a 1913 Gallawy Stationary gasoline engine. A pulley & wheel system connects all three above units.
The last exhibit is Grand Ma's kitchen. This year's them is 'Every day is Christmas'. There was at least seven X-mas trees also a working player piano & cabinets of Christmas items. The kitchen has a dinning table, wood type stove, cabinet. The kitchen is probably from the late 1920's/early 30's.
All all three museums have excellent lighting for photography. Restroom only on the ground floor. For the second floor is handicapped wheelchair elevator. Plenty of free parking space with two handicapped spaces. For some reason my GPS unit couldn't get a match. I used the address of Hyde's Dinner, 157 Homer Avenue, Cortland, NY, which is about 3/4 mile south of the museum. My total time was about 3 1/2 hours-time out for a visit to Hyde's Dinner. I thank the following staff/volunteers for their help-Cindy, John, Tim, Tom & Barbara.
During my two visits would say at most ten other visitors. Please don't let this number stop from a visit. There much to see. There is no one huge exhibit, a exhibit will be made of several small items creating a very impressive exhibit. The most enjoyable two exhibits are the WW 1 & American civil war periods.
What I viewed on July 19'19 will not be available. Both the Brockway Trucks & the Tractors of Yesteryear will be completely different & possibly part of the Homeville Museum may be changed. With the trucks & tractors changing a second visit will happen.
A visit is highly recommended. I know other future visitors will not spend the time I did, yet any time spent will be worth the time. Just have an open mind & enjoy what you encounter.

My grandson and I were drawn there for the Brockway trucks and somewhat for the antique tractors but this place is much more that just those 2 categories. There are a wide range of military displays from the Civil War through Desert Storm including an impressive assortment of firearms. Planed on spending no more than and hour and a half there but were there just over 2 hours.

This is truly an extraordinary museum, actually three museums all at one location, with an astounding display of interesting exhibits. No matter what your interests might be, it seems likely there will be exhibits there that will be of attraction to you.
The personnel at the museum, mostly volunteers, are exceptionally friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. On their guided tours they provide much additional colour and background to each of the exhibits, making the visit that much more interesting.
They have a an extensive and interactive children's area situated next to a great model train display. The train display has numerous buttons along its length that allow visitors to operate the various carnival rides along the rail line, flashing light rail way crossings, lights in buildings etc. There also is a near life size steam locomotive section that visitors can climb on and have their picture taken etc.
The museum provides wheelchairs and electric scooters for anyone with those needs, and provides an elevator to take guests up to the mezzanine section. The museum has a nice gift shop and provides a large and very convenient paved parking area.
For transportation buffs, the Brockway truck exhibit with its rotating display is beyond compare - and be sure to hear the story about the vintage Brockway fire truck from South America that made an epic two year overland odyssey back to the Cortland manufacturing facility, where it was exchanged for a new model.
There is an excellent and very comprehensive military section, stories of early Cortland entrepreneurs, an impressive display of early buggies and carriages, the interesting history of the clock tower, pioneer furniture, early office equipment, a re-creation of President Lincoln's box at the Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C., complete with the actual chairs, and so much more.
Adjoining the main museum building is a huge hip roofed former barn that houses an impressive collection of, mostly rare, farm tractors, on one half of the barn area. The other half, which sadly we were not able to see due to time constraints, provides an exhibit of a rural home life, with each of the rooms appropriately furnished with period furniture and artifacts.
It should be mentioned that every artifact has a large, easy to read information board, not only telling what the item is, but also adding some interesting detail or trivia about it. Nice.
This is one great museum - and we will be back another time to see more of it - the 3 1/2 hours we were here was not adequate time to see it all.
If you are in the area, don't pass this museum by - - it is of a calibre one does not often see in a smaller community.

Plenty of paved parking, reasonable entrance fee, tour guide was a male for us and answered many of our questions and a Brockway (Retired) truck owner who had been a farmer. He turned us over too a female who toured us thru a building building which was mostly tractors. She and her husband own 15 of their own in Madison County. Both tour guides were personnel, friendly and informative. If one wishes to learn history then this is a worthwhile museum. The bathroom facilities are new and clean with a wheel chair lift for those who need it. A very informative tour and were told that exhibits were changed yearly. A return visit will be planned next year! Small gift shop and again ALL employees encounter were happy and made us feel at home! As it is named...Living History Museum!

Lots of displays on a variety of topics - a great train display, war memorabilia, Brockway trucks, old toys, farm equipment, etc. We spent an hour here and really enjoyed it. A guide walked around with us and had lots of stories and explanations. The museum (History Center) has 3 buildings. They have taken great care in their displays. The original clock from downtown Main Street is here also.

We stopped not knowing exactly what to expect. It was a great place. Very helpful, interesting, and informed volunteers. Learned many things and had some great conversations. Worth the trip.

We stopped in this past weekend with two boys, both under the age of two, and spent a happy hour there. We were expecting trucks and tractors and they were there and very interesting to look at; we were pleasantly surprised to also find small childrens' play corners in both the truck and train areas, and several other "extras" that the boys enjoyed. For example, they got to honk the horn of an antique truck, ring a train bell, manipulate items on the large model train display, and sit on a tractor. Most of the tractors had giant stuffed animals sitting on them ... really, the whole thing was well thought-out and child-friendly. There were definitely times we had to say, "don't touch!" but not as many as I was expecting in a museum. Another highlight of our visit was that the volunteers/staff were extremely friendly and informative.
It is easy to drive by without realizing it is a museum; the signage could be better. We appreciated that we were some of the only folks there because it meant no crowds, lines, etc.

The last time I was in this building was when it was AB Browns dept store in the 1970's. There are 3 sections of the museum. Local history, connection to famous people, military connections (large selection of war items uniforms) is one area. Complete with a bunker from WWI or II, lots of trains. The next area is Cortland's famous Brockway Trucks, great exhibit with every type of truck, 18 wheelers, firetruck, milk delivery, fuel trucks. Very clean detailed area. The other section is the farm equipment and old fashion kitchen located in the barn next door.
