Loved it here. Great experience and the staff were brilliant. Highlight of our trip. Lovely museum with some interesting history.

The entrance is just 100 dalasis to the museum which will tell you quite a lot about history of Gambia. There is also pretty good toilet. The “pool” is just a few seconds walk from the museum and it is “free” as it is included in museum fee. I am seriously against to touching while animals and make me sad that so many people taking “cool” photos while “sitting” on crocodiles.
There are 3 parts … one where you can go to crocodiles very close and touch them. Pool where you can’t go close to them as they are aggressive (well that’s their nature right?) and then where you can see babies. I have had great guy to talk to and we were joking and talking not just about crocodiles but life generally. You can contribute some money if you wish to keep this place running and I think it’s worth it

After visiting the Crocodile Pool.
The Museum is small but very informative/interesting history of the Gambia. You will learn about the ancestral rituals, music, history of the British colonisation until recent days...By itself this was a good highlight for me.
The Crocodile Pool itself, is a rather muddy pool surrounded by trees and occupied by an assortment of tame crocodiles that do very little. Didnt take any photos with the crocodiles, because it didnt felt right for me.
It is an Okay way to spend an hour or two. Just don't expect a major tourist attraction

First there is some interesting museum
pieces about the tribes etc. Then you go to the pool. The guy who looks after the crocs really knows them well and you can tell he cares for them. You can stroke the crocodile under the supervision of their keeper.
Plenty of opportunity to donate to the upkeep of the crocs. Don’t buy the exercise books on offer at the price they ask for, so much cheaper in the shops!

The site actually starts with a small museum with different rooms on Gambian culture - traditions, music, war etc. Then you go to see the crocodiles where the knowledgable keeper will tell you all about them and you can take photos. I think entry is 100D and then you can make a donation to the care of the crocodiles too. Good place to combine with other places to visit - we then went to Serekunda Market.

If you have never been close to animals like these before it's probably a life times experience for you, although they are so well fed they are not very active but it is possible to touch them which gives most people a thrill. Should visit this place if just for the historic connection of Katchikally.

This was a really bizarre experience. The guide was telling us that it was perfectly safe to stroke the crocodiles and have photos taken with them. The reptiles were practically comatose, now bearing in mind that they are cold blooded creatures, they should have been very lively indeed in a temperature of 34-36 degrees. When questioned about the state of their inertia we were told that they have been trained to only perceive fish as food, which l am sorry to say was a complete and utter load of Croc! They were undoubtedly sedated which was very sad to see and l and 1 other in our group refused to participate in such a farce.

What are the opening hours? Is it open on New Year's Day? Thanks

I'm not sure of the times. Our guide just took us around 11am as he said that is when the crocodiles are out soaking up the sun.
I suspect they are open every day (because everything was on Christmas Day) but cannot be sure. Sorry.

Do you need to book onto a 'tour' to visit the pools or do you get a guide with the entrance fee? How much is a return taxi (approximately) from the Senegambia strip/beach area?
Many thanks,
Sarah

No need to book. Staff there can guide you. We fed the crocs fish. You can get close enough to crocs to touch them and have photos taken next to them but don't touch their heads. We also took hand sanitzer gel to use after.
