The church seems to be open only at services. It is interesting since it is an old landmark in Laayoune from the time when the Spanish culture were present. See the photo exibition in the nave.

The church among the highlights to see in Laayoune; its archtecture is notable. Although I did not get to visit inside, I appreciate being able to see its outside.

Un edificio sólido, tipo el último de Filipinas, con unos curas entregados en un desierto, de lo último de la presencia española

It is really just quite a basic Catholic Church built in 60’s modernist architecture.
It is unusual because it is in a Muslim country. However it was built when the Spanish government was in control of the area.
In a town with not much attraction it could be one of the highlights.
The two priests are very knowledgeable of the local area and made the visit special for us by their welcoming hospitality.
Worth visiting.

This building is a few minutes ride from the main residential area and has some attractive gardens opposite . It appears to be a rare example of a Spanish Building in this new and growing city.

Visited this church after a completely unexpected meeting (in the contested Western Sahara) with a group of mainland Chinese tourists. They believed that the famous Chinese/Taiwanese author Sanmao 三毛 was married to her Spanish husband here while writing her book Stories of the Sahara during the early 1970s.
Finding the cathedral (also apparently known as St Francis of Assisi Church) is not too difficult. On google maps, it's named the Spanish Church and sits opposite a public garden between Ave Hassan II and Blvd 28 February. While the cathedral is apparently used by local Spanish speakers and UN staff, the priest on duty insisted that the diocese has been through the records and there is no indication at all that Sanmao ever visited or married on the site.
Not being catholic or an architect, I cant comment authoritatively on the merits of the building. It was certainly peaceful and cool in the heat. And apparently it was designed by one of the two men, Diego Mendez, who was ordered by Franco to design the contentious Valley of the Fallen in San Lorenzo de el Escorial. All in all, worth a visit in a town that has very little of interest other than an oppressive police presence.

The church is open Monday to Saturday 1000 hrs - 1700 hrs.
However you must knock on the door for attention as the door will usually be locked.
I am sure that Mario the Pastor or Padre Valeiro Echo will be pleased to welcome you.
It would be good to make a small donation to help the church and or a little gift of biscuits or something for the staff.
If you are visiting the airport you must say hi to Taki who runs the airport shop (there is only one) he can organise tours or anything for you and he will not rip you off.
He knows the priests at the church too and can show you all the Echo Chan sites if that is your reason for visiting.
Have a great time.
