We bicycled a few miles of this Harlem Valley rail trail, it was very good, with nice surface to ride on, thru rivers and farms, lots of bridges to cross, some view of bear, and benches for resting! We also found that the restaurants close early and Tuesdys lots of restaurants are closed! The trail is well marked and very well maintained and ample number of restrooms/toilets! Suggest to write and request trail maps in advance before going to ride the trail! There is good parking at the Mellerton (Town end).

With its new open segment, the rail trail is now about 24.5 miles in length from the hamlet of Wassaic to Orphan Farm Road, on the north side of Taconic State Park. The best part about the trail is that it combines views of woodlands, farmlands and wetlands with the Taconic Mountains framing them. While there are few services directly on the trail (The town of Millerton and the Depot Deli and Bash Bish Bicycles in Taconic State Park are exceptions) there are many options within a mile or so of the trail. As well there are some great options for other activities nearby: Alander Mountain and Bash Bish Falls are two hiking options and Copake Iron Works is an interesting historical site. Or, if shopping is more your style, Millerton has fun and unique shops.

I went for a bike ride on this trail and it was very pleasant. I went from Millerton to Amenia and back. It was a very flat trail and was not difficult in any sense. The views are decent and remind me slightly of the south of France. While I am yet to walk the trail, based on the people I saw walking on the trail it seems like it would be fun. Pedestrians and bicyclists were all respectful. Will definitely go again and bike the full trail. It's a good idea to end in Millerton, so that you can get a coffee and snack/meal at Irving Farm or Harney afterwards.

This is a lovely trail. Paved, not crowded, several entry points and lots of diverse scenery. Flat and easy to navigate. You do have some serious cyclists but they are respectful and don't fly past you at 80 with no warning. If you are walking, just be courteous and stay to the right or at least be mindful of bicycles.

Decided to take the bike out for a Sunday ride and remembered this trail from last year when I went to Bash Bish Falls. The trail is probably 30 miles long (?) and partially completed so didn't do the whole thing. Trail runs along the Taconic Mountain Range which runs north/south along the MA, NY and CT borders. Had great sunny weather and gorgeous views. There were a fair amount of people out this day, riding/walking/running. I did several miles and once they complete the section at the southern end where I went and connects to an already open trail section, I'll head back.

We went over the hudson with our bikes- it was gorgeous.
Avoid the holidays in nice weather- it can be really crowded.

This is a nice, easy bike trail through scenic Dutchess county. I rode the section from Millerton to Wassaic, about 21 miles. I was hoping the section from Millerton to Under Mountain Rd would be completed, but alas no luck. Maybe next year. The trail is paved and wide enough to pass walkers and other cyclists safely. The trail runs across several roads. Road crossings are well marked, but some of the roads are busy so be cautious. Everyone I passed was friendly and smiled hello, making it a lovely ride.

Bring your bike along, and bike north to Millerton and back. It is an asphalted path where the railroad used to continue north, and lands you in Millerton with many options for refreshment.

Starting (or ending) at the terminus of the Harlem Valley Line, a commuter railroad out of Grand Central Station, this lovely, lightly used asphalt trail connects villages and disused train stations through farms, meadows, and wetlands all flanked by two old mountain ranges. The villages of Amenia, Millerton, Copake Falls, and Hillsdale offer refreshments, food, shopping, and lodging, with camping in the Taconic State Park system next to Copake Falls. The trail extends about 25 miles, 9 miles of which is country road until this second is finished, reportedly in late 2019. Access points with small parking lots occur at nearly every road crossing. Motorized transportation is verboten.

Great 11 mile ride from Wassaic NY Train station to Millerton--ride past ponds, fields, in shade and sun. 300 feet total elevation, so not strenuous. Millerton offers bookstores, coffee shops, ice cream, etc etc--great place for lunch before you head back. Or start in Millerton and save your eating for after the 22 mile round trip.

Hello, we are a family of 4 with 2 teens who have biked a lot. We would like to do this bike train but it is confusing to work out the logistics of it. We live in Manhattan and would need to take train to a point in the trail where we can rent 2 bikes (we have 2 already) bike for 3+ hours and then return on train back to nyc. Where do we take train to, where should we bike to from there, can we take our two bikes on train, would it be better to rent the 2 bikes in the city so that we have more flexibility where we start and end the bike ride, which parts of the trail are nicest to bike….any advice would be really appreciated.

Is the section from Millerton to Undermountain Rd bikable? On the website, it looks like it's still under construction. Is is possible to bike all the way through from Wassaic to Hillsdale yet? Our bikes are hybrid road/mountain bikes, so it doesn't have to be paved as long as it's accessible and not dangerous. Thanks!

Hi all, planning to drive there & bring the bikes w/ us instead of taking the metro north train. Any suggestions where we should park the car ?
1-Preferably not too far from a town or village where we can grab a bite after our bike ride.
2- And the most scenic route to see the autumn foliage on bikes?
Thank you!

I would suggest you park in Millerton, NY. It is an easy drive up Rt 22 to Millerton. Turn right and there is a parking lot to the left. There are many nice places to eat within walking distance of the trail. You have the option of riding south or north from this point. Look up MIllerton and you will get a list of the many restaurants. It is a really nice little town.

We are flying in so won't have bikes or a bike rack. Where can we rent bicycles? I've already asked bicycletourcimpany but they cannot this time of the year.

You didnt mention when you were coming, but there is a bicycle rental at the Copake Falls entrance. It is off of Route 22. You can then bike north to Hillsdale or south to Millerton and beyound.
