Stopped here on a whim - it's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth it. We had a "private tour" by the curator of the museum and she is a wealth of knowledge about this area of the Catskills. Absolutely wonderful! We are the type who typically just like to browse exhibits on our own, but I am so thankful that this time around we allowed the curator to point out all the highlights and add her insights (and humor) to the experience.

Highly recommend to stop by here if visiting the region. Learn the history of the area with a guided tour or just walk through on your own and check out the photos and such. Make this a pit stop as you won’t spend more than an hour here.

It was really a great experience the curator ofthe museum gave us a private tour very good Museum had
a lot of artifacts about the entire history of this part of New York State and the people from all the way back to the 1800 1700 midnight

WOW! I've never enjoyed nor appreciated a museum as much as I did the Shandaken HIstorical Museum.
A rainy Sunday drove us indoors and we thought we'd take a peek at this museum before we headed home We planned on staying 20 minutes or so and ended up staying 1 1/2 hours. Every minute was jam packed with information provided by Kathleen Myers, the museum director. She is an amazing advocate for this region and this museum. Her passion and knowledge is infectious!
The coolest thing is that as we drove south on our way home, we were able to identify so many of the hamlets that Kathleen had told us about. I definitely hope this historical landmark gets the recognition and funding it deserves.

Highly recommend this Museum. Intimate and comfortable however easy to drive by if you are not looking carefully! The staff here has curated an incredible exhibit regarding the history of Ulster County. We popped in on a whim and Kathleen very generously took the time to walk us through the history of the 13 hamlets that make up Shandanken.
They have an extensive archive of articles, photographs, and Ulster County memorabilia. Between Henry Jackson Morton (who decifered the Rosetta Stone), Neil Diomand’s early performances, the longest tunnel in the world (which carries NYC’s water supply), railroad history, the grand old resorts of the century, and everything else in between (!)....it is well worth the visit. Great if you’d like to learn more about the region.
We have been coming up to the Catskills on the weekends from NYC; mainly enjoying the scenery, hiking, food, beverages, campgrounds, inns, etc. However stopping in the museum has given us a very unique understanding of the area and it has left us so much more appreciative. Truly wonderful.
By chance we also took part in an event happening in collaboration with Big Indian Native American Cultural Center in dedication to the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee). Really enjoyed!

Phenomenal museum ... ! You would never believe what culture existed in this region of the catskills and the amazing cultural men and women of our generation that emerged from the area. Heck, Neil Diamond played his first gig ever just down the road from the museum ... It's a must stop. You'll have new appreciation for the area. And the enthusiastic director of the museum, a native American woman herself, runs you through a very descriptive and exciting narrative of the landscape ... the big hotels ... the railroads .... and the story of Big Indian .. standing well over 7' plus, the town Big Indian was named for him and how he was murdered for marrying a white woman. Interesting place .... It's a hidden gem in the area.
