We've seen many Vanderbuilt homes, so I found the Rockefeller home an interesting contrast. While certainly large and ornate, it is understated by comparison. Our tour guide was very good and very knowledgeable about the property and the family history.
We took the Classic Tour, which is about 2 1/4 hours. You have to take a shuttle bus to get to the property and you aren't allowed to wander the grounds. That is disappointing - the grounds are extensive and beautiful. Part of the Classic Tour includes a tour of Nelson Rockefeller's art collection, which spanned classic to modern. As we don't have an appreciation for modern art, we didn't really enjoy that portion of the tour.
Part of the classic tour is a visit to the carriage house to the see the extensive collection of horse-drawn carriages and automobiles. I found that very interesting, but my wife was less excited.

We opted for the Classic 2 hours tour and you cannot go wrong with this level of tour. You get paired with a very knowledgeable guide (ours was Barbara) and you get to see the opulent main floor, sprawling gardens, the carriage house, and the art gallery on the first floor. Barbara was very thorough and engaging and we really enjoyed the comprehensive understanding she gave us of the Rockefeller family. As an art lover, I really appreciated the description of some of the pieces of art, how they were procured, and the meaning behind their placement among the rooms/gardens. A really enjoyable experience.

Try to get a tour with Karen Zaslow- she is highly knowledgeable on all aspects of the tour and she is delightfully personable as well. Three hours of pure delight viewing the incredible home and gardens in this hidden gem. It's a must see, you will be spellbound. Art and beauty every step you take, in every direction you look.

There are several levels of tours available and we have had 2 of them both outstanding.
Great information and the history of the property and surroundings were freely shared.

Our tour guide Kelle, was tops! She answers all of our questions and we had a lot of them.
She was pleasant and knowledgeable. Kelle made the place come alive for us.
She showed us where to stand to get the view of the artist or architect. It was a great tour.

It is a beautiful estate that will make you gasp. Our group enjoyed having Kateri as our guide since she gave us so much useful information.

Beautiful estate with lush gardens. I thought enough time was given on my Classic tour to appreciate most areas. It was nice that we went outside in-between different areas - saw the gardens and sculptures before visiting the art gallery in the basement. I hadn't noticed that we were to visit the coach house which was interesting but my main focus was on the house itself.

My husband and I had Grand Tour on Saturday afternoon in August. It took almost 3 hours, and it totally worth it. it is too sunny and hot outside, but we still really enjoyed every bit of tour. I highly recommend this tour.
Make sure you put visitor center address in your navigation, not Kykuit. You will be there in Shuttle bus from visitor center.

I took your magnificent Grand Tour a few weeks ago. Our guide, Brian, was superb in every way. All was wonderful until the end, when we were faced with the giant Black Lives Matter mural in the car garage. As Brian explained, John D.'s wife was active in social equality, which was terrific. But to have the BLM mural and a Critical Race Theory poem, which derided people with white skin, in the car garage was highly inappropriate and disappointing. They removed us visitors from the estate's beauty and time period and threw us into today's specific politics and social issues. It tainted the tour for me, and I overheard others in my group say the same.

Kykuit combines a grand estate, fascinating people, lush gardens, and an impressive classical and modern art collection into an outstanding experience that is well worth the price of admission. We opted for the three hour Grand Tour option and were not disappointed. Our guide skillfully combined comprehensive knowledge of four generations of the Rockefeller family with a multitude of details and nuances of the house and grounds. While pictures of the interior of the house were not permitted, there was more than enough opportunity to photograph the pristine gardens, pavilions and stunning views of the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades. I came away thoroughly impressed by a family that seemed to realize that their wealth brought with it a responsibility to use it to benefit as many as possible.

No. It's essentially a museum with extensive antiquities and valuable art, tapestries, rugs, furnishings and sculptures. No place for pets and I doubt service dogs either.

My wife and I would like to take the Grand Tour. Do you recommend buying advance tickets, if so how far in advance?

This site is saying that I cannot include a website link but if search for Hudson valley and then find kykuit you will find all the answers to your questions and be able to purchase tickets if you can visit!

Can you take the Hudson River Ferry from NYC to Tarrytown to take a tour of Kykuit? Where do you get the Ferry, and where does it stop to take the tour of the Rockerfeller home?

I honestly do not know. I drove there. Was not a bad drive at all. Very smooth sailing. NOT congested.
