We enjoyed our little walk on a cold day in this lovely preserve. it is near where our friends live, and after our walk we went back to their place for coffee.

This is a big nature preserve somewhat near the University. It's a excellent park for a very long hike, a time to be out in nature.

Really nice place for a walk in the woods. Well manicured landscaping, and a recently renovated boardwalk on the Mill Pond trail, with convenient entrance right from the pond. Lots of trails - we didn't even get to do all of them. My kids liked the "Labyrinth", also a great spot for birdwatching - cormorants and wood ducks both breed there, plus goldfinches, hummingbirds, and bobwhite quails, among others. And it's free!

There are several different trails throughout the park with varying distances and scenery. We took the Forest Sanctuary trail through the woods, which is mostly flat with a few inclines. The changing colors on the leaves made for some nice photo ops.

What a wonderful place to get away & enjoy a quiet woodsy peaceful area. Great hiking trails, easy to get in your 10,000 steps ! Easy to commune with nature & a lot to discover. A gem in the middle of Stony Brook.

So I love this park and for years I would go almost every day to run through all 3 of the park areas in the avalon. I haven't gone in quite awhile for 2 reasons. First there are so many little tree nubs coming up from the ground that it is too dangerous to run - I fell 3 times before I called it quits. Secondly, there are dogs in the park - some areas I think its ok if they are on a leash and some they don't have to be on a leash - in any case the dog owners don't pay attention to the signs and there isn't enough park security to enforce the rule. Im sure the dogs are all nice but you just can't know and when you're running and a dog starts running after you its not fun. If they put down mulch or smoothed out the paths and enforced a "no dog" policy - this would be a really beautiful place!!

Hi I plan on going tomorrow. I know there are no bathrooms here. Are there any public bathrooms in town we could go to like the Village Center?

Hi, There are a few restaurants in the Village. The Three Village Inn is easy to walk in and use the bathroom. It's a hotel and pub/restaurant. There is a gas station that may have a restroom.

How long will it take to walk the park??

At least one to two hours
It says trails are well.maintained and some are paved but is it ok to use a jogging stroller in any portion (at least a mile). I go to belmont lake alot with stroller and unpaved trails are fine but if its too rocky or too many hills Im not sure I would manage well.

I don't think you could run with a stroller on any of the trails--just too bumpy: roots, rocks, stairs, and such. There are stretches on the road, and maybe near the pond, but nowhere close to a mile.
Is it possible to bring a stroller ?

Yes. But please have them on a leash. There have been dog fights in the park.

There are 2 areas to visit at Avalon: the garden, which runs along the Stony Brook upper mill-pond and then climbs up steeply, eventually leading to the preserve (which is contiguous with the Nature Conservancy property).
If you wish to visit the preserve, there are several crude parking areas along Shep Jones Lane, a main one near Harbor Rd, 2 smaller ones further south along Shep Jones, and then one on the Nature Conservancy/Avalon border. The main one is rather rough, and of course the northern end of Shep Jones itself is a rutted dirt road (part of its charm).
To visit the garden, one parks on Harbour Rd, near the grist mill.
