My husband, teen daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the Discovery Wetlands Cruise given by the WMHO. The naturalist on board was amazing. It was great being around someone that is so passionate about the environment. We learned so much. The boat is spotless and the captain was super nice. Such a relaxing 90+ minutes on the water seeing egrets (two kinds!), osprey, swans, turtles, Canada geese (not Canadian..I've been calling them by the wrong name my entire life) and herons. Definitely bring binoculars and a camera. I suggest calling in advance to make a reservation. Our Thursday morning tour was fully booked. The tour schedule varies each day because it is based on when the high tide is. There is a huge parking lot near the boat. Enjoy!

We're Long Islanders who learned a lot from Suzy the naturalist onboard about our own backyard and the birds that live among us. Very informative with regards to history and the habitat. We saw osprey, blue and white heron and all kinds of gulls. The pontoon boat was very clean and smooth sailing. Suzy was so well spoken, interesting and personable...the Captain not so much; we asked him to take a picture of our group when we docked and he could barely be bothered and the one and only one he took came out poorly.
Would recommend sitting on the right side of the boat as that is where the majority of the action is. Cruise was scheduled for 1.5 hours but we were on the water more like 2. Suzy is very passionate about what she does and went out of her way to include our 12 year old boys who were the youngest people on board. Would recommend this relaxing outing through the wetlands to anyone who enjoys being out on the water, history and or bird watching.

One of the programs offered by The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) is a cruise on a pontoon boat to discover the salt marsh wetlands. We booked in advance to get a discount admission on the telephone. The pontoon, which is is clean, covered and comfortable, leaves at high tide so the departure times vary each day. The cruise was calm and at a slow pace- the most lively moments were, in a competitive spirit, twisting our necks, scanning the marsh grass to spot a bird before the guide or another passenger remarked on it. Our knowledgeable, friendly naturalist guide pointed out the varieties of birds while explaining details about their life cycle and their habitat in a manner that appealed to both adults and children. Photographers seemed to appreciate the pace and the opportunity to get close up to the birds. The hour and a half was well-spent. If you are in the area or planning a day of exploration near Port Jefferson, it is a memorable activity on the water without the effort of kayaking or paddle boarding (see another’s Trip Advisor review in Stony Brook). Because no food or drink -except water - is allowed, I recommend you use it as an excuse to head to a restaurant in the area or have a picnic on a nearby beach to muse over the beauty of nature on West Meadow Creek on the North Shore. We did not visit the WMHO Educational and Cultural Center itself; clearly, I had not looked this up in advance in Trip Advisor, otherwise we would have investigated.

I have seen some great exhibits here. The current exhibit of Nikola Tesla's life and contributions is unique and informative. It's a slice of LI history that I was not familiar with. Everyone should gain a better understanding of this man's contributions to science by visiting this exhibit.

We have a couple coming from California. The Tesla exhibit sounds interesting. Can you tell me more, what the hours are, and if there is a lot of walking?
