You will not find a better informed wild life expert than Steve Hall, the owner here. He with his wife Wendy have rehabilitated scores of animals over the years, and published several books on the subject. Tragically there was a licensing crackdown, Wendy passed away, and most of the mammals were removed.

Thank you Candice. It's been a rough year with Wendy passing away in January, as the DEC lifted her licenses for rehab and education. but while mammals have been rehomed to Refuges out of state, there are still many interesting things to see and learn about at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. Why are insects in decline, and what does that mean for the rest of living creatures on earth? What makes crows and ravens and other members of the CORVID family the smartest birds on earth? What makes owls probably the greatest predators in history? (Thank God we're large and they're relatively small.) Why are all jet fighters based on the peregrine falcon, and what other conservation roles do peregrines perform for us? How old is the universe, and how long have homo sapiens been on earth, and what does that tell us about many of our most cherished beliefs?

DON'T GO! Just don't. Even if you don't make an optional donation, you will leave disappointed.
I gave it a great review years ago, but it's nothing like it used to be. A couple years ago they lost their license to keep wild animals, and every single animal of interest is gone. There are a couple birds, three goats, and a few pet-shop reptiles. No wolves, no bears, no foxes, no cats, nothing that you want to see. Honestly, you will have a better animal viewing experience at a decent aquarium supply store.
But of course, they don't tell you that when you enter the new visitor's centre, nor have they taken down the trail signs that say stuff like "Wild animals this way", "wolf enclosure", and "Predators, mammals, birds of prey -->". The owner told me that there are "more animals down the hill past the goats," and when we got there, all they had were two owls, four ducks, three chickens, and some kind of jay.
And as it turns out, even back before the changes AWR was operating in an extremely sketchy way, including unsafe cages and lying to government regulators about BEAR ESCAPES (do a google search for news articles about this place from 2021). So despite my disappointment about this visit, I'm glad those poor animals are now housed in proper facilities.
I can't express enough my regret for having visited AWR. I can only hope that by warning people, others will avoid the let-down of this place. Don't go.

If you're looking for a roadside zoo, this is not it. This review gives a very once sided view of what actually happened, and what we represent today. It's been a rough year with my wife and co-owner Wendy passing away in January, as the DEC lifted her licenses for rehab and education. More on Wendy at http://www.adirondackwildlife.org/Wendy-Obit.html. More on what really happed at the AWRR with the DEC at DEC-AWR-100121.html. This is the same DEC that denies folks ever see cougars in the Adirondacks, the same unit that was just caught red handed lying about the gray wolf shot near Cooperstown last year. Apparently they didn't realize that the conscientious hunter who asked the DEC to assess the wolf's DNA, had also supplied DNA tissue to a group of non-profits, who had two different reputable sources identify the DNA as gray wolf. This is the same unit which wants to mentor your ten year old to become a trapper, the cruelest of out door sports. In addition, even though we warned the DEC that half of these rehomed mammals would die, which in fact happened, they said "how unfortunate", as though that had nothing to do with their decision.
On the other hand, while mammals have been rehomed to Refuges out of state, there are still many interesting things to see and learn about at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. Why are insects in decline, and what does that mean for the rest of living creatures on earth? What makes crows and ravens and other members of the CORVID family the smartest birds on earth? The place has changed significantly from last year, a change in licensing rules does not allow them to have most wild animals in their care any more for now. Their work for now is as a refuge for animals whose owners could not take care of any more. There are goats, a large snake and tortoise, several lizards. They also care for two large eagle owls, a Saker falcon and a Magpie Jay. All that complimented by very informative and personal stories by Steve, an avid animal advocate and book author. Very well worth a visit, also after the changes.

They had very nice trails. The gentleman there was very informative. Problem was there were no bears, wolf's etc. Wish we had known that prior to visiting.

The website, as well as the FaceBook page makes it clear that all mammals were rehomed last October, as my wife Wendy was dying of organ cancer in home hospice. Some folks visit based on reports from friends, and we apologize if anyone is disappointed by recent changes. there are still many interesting things to see and learn about at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. Déception.
No more wolfes, Bears or fox.
Only 2 owls, some ducks and a exotic turtle.
NO SIGN at the entrance saying that that they have no more local animals like announced on their web site.
Many persons were seiking wolfes.
Only positive point is the trail and view at Whiteface Mountain.

I will confess that we didn't spend very long here. That's because we left my other daughter and my husband in the car, because she uses a wheelchair and this is not particularly wheelchair accessible. I do think that you could probably get a wheelchair in the welcome center, but there's not a lot in there. I did see some pelts and I think there were a couple of other small exhibits. Mostly this is a walk on a wooded trail to see some animals in enclosures. We saw a wolf, a coyote, two bears, a Eurasian lynx, a red fox, a porcupine, and a Eurasian hawk owl? Eagle owl? Google isn't really helping me out here. I'm a little confused about why a North American rehab facility is displaying Eurasian animals. The enclosures seemed fairly par for the course for a small zoo. My tween was bored, plus we wanted to get back to the car, so we turned around at the end of the animal enclosures, although I think there was more trail. Reading the other reviews, it probably would have enhanced our experience to talk to someone, but the man by the bears was talking to someone else and a lot of other people seemed to be occupied with the building of a perimeter fence. So ultimately, our experience was a fairly short visit to a small, not-wheelchair-accessible zoo. Your mileage may vary.

There are many types and sizes of wheel chairs, and we do have folks in wheel chairs visit regularly, and we make allowances in more convenient parking down below for those who have wheel chairs which struggle on the viewing path. For a full experience, speak to the folks who work at the Refuge.

Don't miss Steve's 10am talk about wolves. He's a great speaker and the talk is informative and engaging. He is clearly passionate about these beautiful animals and knows his stuff. I also appreciate his political views. I want him to be my best friend. It's a great place to see wolves, bears, owls, foxes, etc up close in very humane conditions. It's a must if you are in the Lake Placid area

We were told about this place at our motel and we had a great time. It was a cold overcast day and this was a great spot to spend time. They take care of animals and such that have problems or are rehabilitating. We say Lynx, bobcats, wolves, fox, bears, porcupines and much more. Great volunteers to give you plenty of information. This place is free and accepts donations which we were glad to give.

We were rerouted here when we decided against the drive up Whiteface due to it being too cloudy to see anything. I must say, I was skeptical going into this place and assumed I was walking into an episode of Tiger King. However, they proved me wrong and we loved it and had a great experience. The animals seem happy and healthy with a good amount of space. We got to see a bear 60’ up in a tree which my kids loved. The couple who runs it were very nice and knowledgeable and seemed to truly care. The guy gave a good history on how legislation can impact wildlife, although while I agree with him on the current events of politics, I could have done without his political arguments which added 5 extra minutes to his talk. Without the politics it would have been 5 out of 5.

A group of us visited the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge in October 2020. We are so glad that we did. We were lucky enough to run into Wendy, the founder of the Refuge. She shared so many wonderful stories with us about the animals and educated us on the work that they do there. We were able to get up close to a grey wolf, a bobcat, Mary - the grey fox, a red fox, bald eagles, a porcupine, and black bears, etc. It was a really wonderful experience and we were so glad that we stopped in. We will certainly revisit with other friends and tell others about our experience there. Thank you Wendy for running such an educational and wonderful organization.

Are there restrictions or prohibitions on bringing pets if we are staying at the park?
Stephen H

AS long as the dog is not aggressive, and you have full control over it, you're fine. It's hard to predict which dogs the wolves will like, as they respond to smell and demeanor, so the only drawback is that if the wolves react aggressively, you won't want to have the dog near their enclosure, as it will distract from your enjoyment of the facility. There are plenty of trails at the Refuge, so even if the dog doesn't work out near the wolves, you could just place the dog in the car, for that part of your visit. Steve

Hi, this sounds like a lovely place and would to visit. Is it suitable for younger children (I have 3-year old twins and a 7-year old), or is it better for older children?

Good for all ages. It is in a very natural setting in the woods and not too large. Maybe Steve will walk in the woods with you and the wolves!!! This is quite a place. Where appropriate clothing and shoes for being in the woods.

How accessible is it for people with difficulty walking?

There is a rough path to the wolf enclosure, which is right below the parking lot. If the visitor is disabled, we suggest that someone drive the group down to the Refuge, where the rest of the enclosures are, eliminating the 500 foot walk down the driveway. If it's a relatively busy day, the driver can then go back and drop the car off in the parking lot.
