This was our first trip to Sugar Mountain. My family goes to the town of Beech Mountain every year because they offer a free sledding hill for children. The sledding hill was closed this past weekend because it had been so warm the week prior which is something I did not know before getting there. So I had to find activities for my children to partake in to get a winter experience. Tubing at Beech Mountain Ski Resort was closed due to rain so we went to Sugar Mt. When we got there, we were directed to park in a lower lot because the upper lot was full. No one asked us why we were there. We took the shuttle, which drops you off near the main ski entrance and then had to walk a ways to get to where the tubing and ice skating is.
Once there, I discovered a nearly empty parking lot that is there for those activities and was also in close proximity to where we had to park our car to take the shuttle. It would have been helpful to know this if anyone had asked why we were there to begin with. I paid over $130 for 3 children to tube for less than 2 hours in dirty snow while being yelled at by staff. I attempted to take a picture of my children by walking on a path that starts at nearby condos. A man on a microphone at the tubing ordered me to return to the parking lot. Once I walked back up, I tried to ask an employee with red hair and glasses why I couldn’t stand there to take a picture. He did not give me an actual answer but repeated twice that it is a golf course. He was extremely rude to me and acted like I was bothering him by asking a question. If you want to take a picture of your children sledding, you have to pay for another tubing ticket. There is no other way to take a picture that will show tubers. The following day we went ice skating. I was required to buy my own ticket because of my 8 year old’s age. She knows how to skate and I don’t. So the policy seems a little strange. I couldn’t skate with her; I just slid along the side. My two older children were there to help her if she fell, bc I would have just fallen with her! The policy like more of a money grab than anything else. The man monitoring the skating rink explained to me that the golf course next to the tubing spot is private property. Seems like a simple explanation and he was very kind and professional, unlike the tubing workers. Overall, I was very disappointed by the whole experience with Sugar Mt and will not be returning. For the amount of money you have to pay for short activities, they could at least hire people who like their jobs or can at least pretend they do.

Had a really negative experience our first time here on 2/23. First, the live slope cams don't work on mobile devices to see the conditions before paying. Second, customer service is very bad, from first paying, to equipment rental, to trying to get a response from mgmt. Their policy is that all questions or concerns for an administrator must be submitted by email, and then they don't respond to emails or phone calls after you leave.
Primary concern was slopes were poorly maintained and unsafe on our visit. There were wet and nearly bare spots. Kids were getting injured and taken out in ambulances. We left after barely an hour. And it was NOT the weather because we went to Appalachian Ski Mountain the same day and they had very nice snow depth and wasn't mushy. (We ended up skiing there all week.) Second concern was we were double-charged for all of our passes (not the equipment). It's been three days and they still have my extra $300.
My recommendation - do not go! If you must go, ask to see the slope conditions before you pay. Also, do not leave the premises with an unresolved issue.

I can't even explain how horrible of a ski experience this was. So many others complained including folks who lived in the community. The owners are destroying the town and this ski mountain. It is archaic and poorly run. No online ticket system, long lines and impossible for families to manage with the "resorts'" poor planning. Absolute waste of time and money.

Having skied NC slopes my whole life, I’ve learned a few things:
- People who have skied out west have unreasonable expectations with regards to NC ski conditions.
- All slopes have lines
- For the average, once a year, recreation skier, NC slopes are a great place to learn and challenge your skills.
This trip, my wife and I (both competent skiers) brought our kids and their Aunt. One kid and the aunt had never skied, the other kid only once before. About an hour on the bunny slope for the newbies and they were off to Easy Street.(Basic Green) By mid day, 2 of them were mixing in side trails with some other greens and the occasional blue. The other rookie was able to conquer a green without falling by then as well.
For those seeking a little more thrill, it was easy to bonfire up the mountain and then ski down to join the rest of our crew on the lower slopes.
Even on a typically packed holiday weekend, we were able to get 6-7 hrs of skiing, find a table on the deck for lunch (it was 50°), navigate food lines in under 15 min, and parking in the top lot.
The key to Sugar (or anything in life), plan ahead, get there early, and don’t assume you are the only person who is on vacation and looking for the best, fastest, cheapest.
If you are renting equipment on site, get it and lift tickets the night before, arrive early for good parking, like an hour and a half before the lifts start running, get a locker for shoes and clothes you will want to shed as it warms up, And most important, take time to slow down and enjoy your company. In 30 years, no one will remember the lines or the crowds, or the snowboarder that almost killed you, they’ll remember the great time they had skiing with you.

It’s Presidents Day weekend. Big crowd. No one doing the tiniest bit of lift line organizing at the main lift. It’s a total free for all at the main lift at the base. People are just in a mob because the dividers are completely insufficient. They have a six-pack lift, but no one there to put groups together. No one at the top helping skiers/riders who fall getting off the lift. But it’s been this way for years. Dunno why I would think it would change. The folks at the Oma lift today were on the ball, though.

AVOID at all costs. Everything is first come first serve, you can’t book ahead. Lines are so long and they sell in sessions, so you have to wait for the next session to be made available. Waited all day and was never able to do ANY activities. None. We drove a long way to go tubing and ice skating with kids and left at 7pm with some very sad kids (after getting there before 10am). Worst vacation experience ever. We were thinking about planning next years “snow” vacation here instead of wolf ridge, where we stayed this trip, but hands down I’d do wolf ridge again way before going to this train wreck.

Unacceptable. We got Scammed
On our first time up a couple of us clipped out skis to get the snow off, and the Patrol got angry at us. We assumed it was a warning and stopped. When we reached the top of the lift, they were waiting and clipped all five of our tickets, no warning, no signs that we weren't allowed to clip our skis. We then went down and asked, "why this happened and when we could do about it," but the Lady at the desk just firmly rejected any questions and sent security to usher us out. We ended up paying almost triple the original cost. And the only reason we were even able to go was because of a Security guy, who was the ONLY helpful and kind person. This was a complete scam of $250 off of us, and there wasn't anything we could do about it. I would NOT recommend going again.

Water fountain out of order so took my kid up to the restaurant for a cup of water. Can't give you water from the machine but I can take a cup to the bathroom and fill it up in the sink. No thanks. I won't be eating here or drinking the sink water.

Not a safe place to ski. The snow they make is not good and can be sticky causing terrible accidents. They know this and don”r care about safety. They don’t have a sales limit in tickets so slopes can be way too crowded and dangerous. We have skied all around USA and have never encountered such a disregard for safety. We are moving to the area and will only ski here when there is plenty of natural snow. Be careful!!!!

Not worth it!!!!! This was our second visit. We only came a second time because we thought our first visit was so terrible being a holiday weekend. Didn’t matter. Holiday or not! From getting tickets to skiing- THE WORST. No limit on number of people makes for ridiculously long lift lines, dangerous slopes because they are too crowded and people don’t know what they are doing. Save your money.

I am bringing my family of 10 over Christmas this year. Half of them are beginners and will need lessons. We are driving 8 hours and have a rental cabin in place. After reading reviews I am concerned about even getting lift tickets/ski rentals or food over Christmas eve and Christmas Day without it being like the hunger games for my family. My question: Is my concern valid?

Do not go there, it is very dangerous as it is a private mountain and NC does not have an enforceable ski safety law (nor is the mountain even regulated by the state). Sugar mountain knows they have no laws to worry about and if someone gets hurt they will stonewall and threaten you if you try to even get assistance. The man that owns the mountain is also the mayor. It is highly corrupt and no one has been able to successfully sue them for accidents even though the mountain is very dangerous. If anything happens, you have no recourse. I was threatened by their management after just trying to talk to someone about an accident, I could not believe it. This place is horribly corrupt, and it is a VERY dangerous place to ski. Drive farther north to Virginia and look at Bryce, which is a very safe and highly professional mountain for beginners and a lovely resort.

Hello,
Does anyone know if Sugar Mountain will blow snow over the Thanksgiving Week? Does it have to be a certain temperature? We will be up there the week of Thanksgiving and are trying to see about coming here or Beech Mountain.

It’s too early to tell. The weather in Avery County has been in the 60s during the day and 40s at night. Right now, we are experiencing record highs. In order to blow snow the temperatures need to be 32° or below. I looked at the extended forecast for Sugar Mountain and Beach Mountain and it’s not looking like the temperatures will be dropping anytime soon. The ski slopes will do everything in their power to be open the week of Thanksgiving. Hopefully, the night temperatures will start dropping soon and the slopes will start making snow. I hope everything works out and you have a snowy Thanksgiving week!

How are the crowds around New Years? Haven't skied in 30+ years and taking 10 year old to learn.
So I guess I'm asking : is this the place for us?

I agree with the first answer. BUTttt,,,try Appalachian Ski Mtn, closer to Boone. Also has a great beginner area and safer for kids & adults. Holidays are packed everywhere, but Appal. is a great starter & Refresher slopes to get into this time. ENJOY!!!

If you ski the morning or the evening, the lines are very short. On the other hand, if you buy half of the day which is from 1:00 p.m to 4:40 there are a lot of people. Usually after 3 to 4 hours of ski, I bet you all be very tired, do I would go for the evening which is from 6;00 to 10:00.

We are planing a trip for new years. Is there usually snow in December?? and are there places dog friendly?
karenhodgens

Typically there is snow on the ground in December; as with any southern location we always keep an eye on the weather in advance of our plans. I typically book places where I can change dates a few days in advance without penalty. Dog friendly places depends on where you are staying; hotel or cabin, commercial. Search dog friendly and there's a website that has pet friendly listings. Search for places to stay at Sugar Mountain, NC. There are rentals and hotels; also depends on the size of your dog. Best of luck; I am sure you will enjoy it.

We’re just looking to enjoy some snow with tubing and sledding... can we do it in one day or would it be better in two days? Not sure what else to do on the resort. Looking to go in Jan 2019

You could probably do both in one day. If you ski in the morning, eat lunch, maybe ski a little more, take a break and then tube, it might work. As a 40-something, it would be too much for me, but I am an avid skiier, so I would ski as much as possible :). I would say tube on the day you arrive, for an hour. Get good sleep and ski all day on the next day. Just my 2 cents.
Hi Eric thanks for the info on Sugar we are going up this Thursday and looking at Beech they only have 7 runs open and are not making snow like Sugar. Weather looks to be warm like you said are you back from Sugar a couple days ago? If so you think we will have some runs open still, We are worried they will shut down early.........I am watching the webcams but we have never been to NC to ski only Colorado. We are going up to teach son how to ski or board. Getting a bit worried with the weather this week, we are hoping we still can have a good couple of days.

IMHO, I would call the resort and ask. I've been there several times but never when it was as warm as it's supposed to be this week.
