I loved the work they have been doing to improve the golf course. That being said, I think there is more to do. The Bermuda had not quite emerged from dormancy and as a result the course was not as challenging as it had been in years past. The course and pro shop still look amazing, the staff was very friendly and helpful, the pace of play was very good for a public course.

A group of us traveled to the area on a golf junket. The course has a great layout and we all enjoyed our round. I must admit that the number of sand traps were a bit overwhelming. The sand in the traps was not consistent. We were told that the course will close soon for major renovations. In my opinion, everyone who plays golf should play this course. I would like to go back after renovations are complete.

This is a nice course in Tanglewood. Easy to get a tee time, and the course is in good shape. Took me a while to get used to the clay in the sand hazards and the weather changes make it difficult to predict the greens. Overall a nice place to golf.

We played both the Reynolds (Sat June 3, 2017 - 54 holes) and Championship (Sunday June 4, 2017 - 36 holes) Golf Courses . Before the review - a note: If using GPS, set it to the front gate of the park. If you try to go straight to the course it takes you to a back entrance that is closed 90% of the time.
They had just aerated when we played there so the greens were a little bumpy. But they were not bad at all and they had significantly reduced greens fees to compensate. As stated above we played 54 holes Saturday on the Reynolds course then 36 holes the next day on the Championship course.
We completely enjoyed the courses. The Reynolds course is not as long but it is tighter and requires a bit more shot making. The Championship course is all about the approach shots and the greens. The fairways are pretty wide open for the most part. Lots of sand traps strategically placed and the greens have a lot of character. The only issue we had was that some of the sand traps were not in the best of shape - some standing water, little sand in some. But we understand there are plans to do major work on them.
The staff both in the pro shop and the snack shop were very friendly and welcoming. The could not have been nicer. Food was good too!
I would recommend these courses to anyone looking for a reasonably priced, high quality place to play golf - we paid $36 for the first rd then $11 for replays due to aeration - regular price is $49 and $17 respectively. Also, you can find discounted greens fees on line through sites like Golfnow.com.

I love this golf course. The cost of the round doesn't match the beauty of the course. There is water around you but doesn't challenge your game. The greens are in great shape. Wildlife varies and adds to the beauty. Love this course.

Championship course is a very good layout, in good condition for the most part. The sand traps, especially when wet, are basically unplayable. Rates for the weekend are $49.00, a little pricy for the area.
Reynolds course is not in as good shape but playable, once again the traps are unplayable. It is a lot tighter.

Played here many times. Always a great time. Like the Reynolds course better because it's a tighter course than the championship course. Well kept and just a few miles away.

I covered professional golf for the Chicago Daily News in the 1970s and it was a hoot. The first tournament I covered, Lee Trevino beat Jack Nicklaus in a playoff for the U.S. Open championship at Merion in Philadelphia in 1971. How good is that? In 1974, I watched as Trevino beat Nicklaus by one shot to win the PGA championship at Tanglewood in Clemmons, North Carolina. You've probably never heard of Tanglewood, right? I hadn't, either. But next to Pebble Beach in California, Tanglewood could be the best public golf course in the United States. It hasn't changed much since Trevino used a putter he found in the attic of the house he was renting that week to beat Nicklaus. He won $45,000, a pittance by today's standards. The reason most people have forgotten about Tanglewood is because on the second day of the tournament Richard Nixon resigned from the presidency in the wake of the Watergate scandal. But if you love golf, you've got to visit Tanglewood. Established in 1951, the property dates to 1584 when Sir Walter Raleigh claimed the land for Queen Elizabeth of England. The championship golf course, designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., is part of the Tanglewood recreation center and park. It is host to the "Tanglewood Festival of Lights" and includes two golf courses, horse stables, a public swimming pool, Mallard Lake for fishing and paddleboat renting and the Tanglewood Park Arboretum and Rose Garden. The beautiful golf course is nestled among rolling hills along the banks of the Yadkin River in the heart of the Piedmont region of North Carolina. It features 98 bunkers and five sets of tees for golfers of all sorts. It has been named the No. 1 public golf course in North Carolina, a golfing mecca. But I still recall the 1974 PGA championship, four rainy days amid a backdrop of a national political nightmare on a golf course that nobody ever heard of at the time and decided by one shot between two of the greatest golfers of all time. It doesn't get any better than that.

Like the beach and long par fives? The Champions' course is for your. A relatively flat course that will challenge your skills is waiting in a pristine country estate setting. Many activities for the whole family & your pets await. Enjoy plenty of nature as you play.

HowardMeridith hit the nail on the head in his recent review: This is a true championship layout that is not in championship course condition. Not that it is in bad shape on the tees, fairways, and greens. But as you play you can imagine what it must have been like when they played professional events here.
One of the features I like most about this course (especially in this area) is that it was designed to be walked. No quarter mile walks from green to tee, no extreme elevation changes (though the course is hardly flat).
There is alot of sand on this course, but if you play the right tee box and think your way around you can avoid alot of it. At the same time, the biggest liability of the course conditioning is the EXTREMELY uneven condition of the sand - hard, soft, white, red, rocks, smooth. Since the sand traps are one of the biggest features of the course, this is particularly frustrating.
In the condition it is in, I would not pay the "rack rate" to play Tanglewood Championship, but we often find good discounts on Golf Now which make playing here a good value indeed.

Hi Taylor B, I was looking for some history about that park and golf. Wow! Hit the jackpot here. I want to rent my condo out and this is great for advertisement. I live about a mile from Tanglewood Park. Recently, I went deer watching their with a neighbor. Who does that? I’m from Calif. and still live there with my elderly Mother. So I want to Airbnb my place in Clemmons, NC. I would lease it but I like to visit, my home there. Anyways, thanks for this history lesson. I am so going to use it!
Best,

To the staff: As of May 23, 2015, Is the excess sand still a problem??
Thank you for your question on Trip advisor. We are just a little unclear about the excess sand. Can you please elaborate?
We hope you visit Tanglewood again very soon.
