‪The grounds and the exterior of the house are the main things to see here as the interior of the house is closed for tours. Not sure if it is closed due to Covid or if they ever plan to reopen the interior.

The house is beautifully proportioned and one of the finest houses of the very early 1800’s in the South. A nice one mile loop walk that goes along the Eno river and a pond is a restful activity on a nice day. This was a plantation during its day but none of the outbuildings are left.

No bathroom facilities or trash cans on the grounds but they do have a few picnic tables.‬

‪Ate is a beautiful house just outside the historic town of Hillsborough. As indicated by other reviews was built in 1815 by a Scottish Merchant

We did but take the tour which wasn't offered when we were there. However the house and grounds are beautiful. There are chairs to sit in behind the house to enjoy the view. They also have a picnic area. Unfortunately there are NO restrooms.

The Poet's Walk is a one mike trail and goes by the Eno River. You can actually see the river from the back of the house.

Nice parking area if you visit Hillsborough this is a must. Not very well known but with the visit!‬

‪Ayr Mount is a Federal style plantation. Ayr Mount was built in 1799 when William Kirkland bought 500 acres.. I could give you lots of history about Ayr Mount, but would rather tell you every time I take company there it is fun to see how they react to the beauty of the place. There is a small fee to see the house but the Poet's Walk is free to use and it makes for a good hiking trail. Enjoy.‬

‪This spacious and well-maintained property is an ideal place to relax, enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise on its wooded pathway, following the banks of the Eno River. It is never crowded but is busiest on warm spring days. It offers plenty of parking in a gravel lot, and you can enjoy a guided tour (fee required) of the federal-era brick plantation house in accordance with its published schedule. The site is open daily; hours vary by season. It is so appealing that we visit throughout the year.‬

‪Secluded historical site with a Large amount of quiet outdoor space to enjoy nature and collect your thoughts. The home tour is very interesting but a bit pricey (and perhaps boring) if you have little ones. Picnic areas are available (no concessions) but the fantastic Weaver Street Market is just down the road back in Hillsborough if you want to pick something up.‬

‪My wife and I were the only two for the tour. Our guide was delightful and very informative. Our picnic on the grounds was solitary except for the song birds.

‪My husband and I visited Ayr Mount on a whim and are so glad that we did.

While waiting for the house tour (at 11am and 2pm almost every day), we rocked in the rocking chairs and enjoyed the rolling hills of Hillsborough. We strolled down to the pond to take it all in.
Well worth the visit for such peacefulness.

The house tour was lovely... we could tell that the caretaker had deep respect for the Kirklands and Richard Jenrette ,the man who bought, restored Ayr Mount, and hired him to watch over it all. The house is well loved and in the Federalist period.

We'll be back to walk the Poets Walk and for special events!‬

‪I toured Ayr Mount in early March 2019 with a group of 18 college students.
This comfortable c. 1815 home is well worth a visit. Our guide was very knowledgeable and she took us through the entire house on our private tour. The furnishings, moulding, and floors are all original. The lower floor has large, framed period maps that help guests to understand the history of the house and its strategic location along an ancient Native American trading path.
I would say the prize possession of the house is the pre-1800 pianoforte in the music room.
The broad expanses of lawn surrounding the house contribute to its prominence and beauty.‬

‪We really enjoyed our walk on the Nature trail along the Eno River and even spotted a snake. We didn't allow enough time to tour the house but we will.return to do that soon.‬

‪We enjoyed the beautiful home and grounds. The history of the family and the home were very interesting. Our tour guide was exceptional. We had the opportunity to ask questions in each room. We would definitely recommend this tour!‬
