Their displays of local history is interesting. They have a small train display being very details of quality workmanship, very impressive. You can have a guided or self tour. We spent 2 hours going through the display rooms explaining living in Ashe County. I would recommend visiting their museum.

Local history in the old courthouse. Love the old squeaky wood floors. Too bad the second floor, which is the courtroom is not open at this time. There are rooms with WW 1 history, as well as history of the Vietnam War. They have a nice model train set up ,and a room on local mining history. Well worth a visit!

My husband and I stopped in today while exploring and so glad that we did. The exhibits range from old NC ..complete with a real still, antique local furniture, to rooms dedicated to the memorabilia of the Civil, WW1, WW2, and Vietnam wars.
The museum is free to view, donations requested. We read alot so the tour..with our personal guide took us a little over an hour.
Worth the trip!

I love all aspects of the displays but I really enjoy the train display through the years for the Virginia Creeper. Bill Baker worked on that and he did an outstanding job.

The Museum of Ashe County History is a wonderful experience for the whole family. I recently visited with my daughter and grandchildren, age 9 and 3. We enjoyed it very much! The train room was my grandchildren's favorite area and the curator allowed them to blow the train whistle. There is so much history captured here and displayed in ways to peak your interest. The displays change from time to time so it is worth visiting more than once a year. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They helped me with some family information while I was there and were happy to do so. The admission is free and there is a gift shop with some very interesting items for sale. We had a great time visiting and I'm sure you will too.

Free museum, super friendly staff! Make sure to do the railroad search game- my kids (age 10 and 11) had a great time doing this and also learning about the mining! If you are in the area, it’s worth the stop!

If you’re interested in the Ashe County area, this is a very good stop & worth your time. The curator is very passionate about the local history, and made iur visit even more special.

Great place to "walk" through history of Ashe County. Beautiful historic courthouse. Will visit again.

The history of this region is presented authentically with detailed and meaningful displays of artifacts and photographs. The diorama is exceptionally well done - kids and adults alike will enjoy the train which runs through the scenes and the chance to seek and find a la 'Where's Waldo' in the charmingly recreated scenes of the area. The exhibits are thoughtful and more professional than a regional county museum might first suggest. Special attention is paid to the early American period as well as WWI/WWII with a replica of trench and presentation of trench warfare. Free admission seals the deal and it is easy to park; the rooms of the museum are easy to maneuver strollers and walkers through. There is a small but cute gift shop selling local arts&crafts, local honey, and books on regional history. Volunteers, personal stories on display, and arresting artifacts have made this a local gem that is worth a stop when in the Ashe County area. The docent told me that they have plans to finalize restoration of the second floor - if you ask nicely and can climb stairs, you may get a behind the scenes peek at the turn of the last century architecture of original courtroom.

Very well done, free, and informative.Excellent way to understand small town Appalachia in older eras. A good spot to visit with children.Staff was knowledgeable.
