‪Nice little slope. Rent your equipment outside, as theirs is dated and not clean, and arrive early, as they are still working on organizing a line, (it takes hours and hours sometimes, no joke). The ski school is just a bunch of kids that can snowboard/ski, but have zero aptitude for instruction, but are nice enough. The lift lines get looooong during peak days and lift speeds are very slow. The crowd seems mostly first timers/beginners, so the obstacle course is REAL on a busy day. On an off day in February, however, it’s an amazing place to play with friends. Really no local or traveler presence, just workers standing around and an open mountain, with a lift ride long enough to get lifted.‬

‪Surprisingly good spot considering the price. Better experience then at Beech Mountain in the same area. Snow wasn't bad considering it was all man made and the trails weren't bad either. Good for a day trip. Enjoy!‬

‪Cataloochee is a pretty easy drive from most places in the Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, western Virginia area. That's a huge plus if you don't want to spend $1000 on just the plane ticket to get to a big time ski slope out west or even in New England. For less than the price of a plane ticket, you can drive to Cataloochee, check into lodging, ski for a couple of days and eat. Ski rental included. And, the skiing is pretty good if you time it right.

One thing I generally dislike about East Coast area skiing is that most resorts are hell and gone from civilization. Once you get to other resorts you're stuck, and if you have non-skiers with you they have nothing to do except hang around the ski lodge. But, Cataloochee is located just "up the hill" from downtown Maggie Valley and a short drive from Asheville. Not downtown NYC but who wants that anyway? Lots of little shops to check out, a few restaurants, and a couple of wine shops. I'm not a huge fan of Asheville, but if you insist it's only about half an hour down I40. Easy drive to Biltmore Estate or whatever. But, let's get back to skiing.

From the main drag, it's about 3-4 miles up a windy road to the Cataloochee resort. There are three main parking lots, all uphill from the lodge, rental and lift area. Even on a fairly busy holiday weekend I was able to find a spot, but it's a hump to the lodge from even the closest spots. I wouldn't do it in my boots (some do. . . ). I'd bring some walking shoes and plan on getting a locker to put them in at the lodge. Remember, it's a downhill hump from the parking lot to the lodge. But, at the end of the day, when your legs are tired from skiing, it's an uphill slog, carrying your gear, back to the car. Think about that if you go.

One thing I love about Cataloochee is that they limit lift ticket sales per day. You need to reserve your tickets at least a day ahead or risk missing the boat. This has the advantage of keeping the crowd on the slopes down to a reasonable level. That's not to say it doesn't get a little crowded. Lift lines when I was there were a tad long. And, I don't remember skiing anywhere that stopped the chairlift as often as they do at Cataloochee. Nice if you're a beginner and fall trying to jump out at the top of the hill. Not so nice for everyone waiting in line. Some of the staff manage the lines really well and get singles matched up to fill the chairs. That helps. Still, on a busy day I spent quite a lot of time standing in line at the chair lifts. (There are two main ones and a third over by the bunny hill.)

Back to lift tickets. Couldn't be easier. I love the system Cataloochee uses. Order online and pay. You get an e-mail with a QR code. Bring your phone to one of the kiosks on the bottom floor of the lodge, open your e-mail, scan the QR code and a nice laminated lift ticket pops out. There are plenty of zip ties stashed around. Couldn't be easier. (You may want to have your e-mail pulled up on your phone ahead of time; I had adequate cell signal to open my mail, but it was a little slow.)

The hill is about what you should expect on the eastern side of the US. Longest run is probably around half a mile? I'm guessing. Took me less than three minutes to ski down from the very top at a moderate speed. Again, very rough estimate. Even the steepest slope is manageable for an intermediate skier. There's a short stretch with some gentle moguls. They say 18 trails but in reality it's more like six main lines down the mountain. (I've never believed that you can fairly divide a single line into segments and call each segment a "trail.") But, you can sort of mix and match to make several different lines to keep things interesting. Even with the large holiday weekend crowd I pretty much covered every possible line in an afternoon (one section was unfortunately closed due to lack of snow the day I was there). It's a decent hill. Maybe a little smaller than some but good enough. The bunny hill is pretty good for beginners and has an easy chairlift. There's an even "bunnier" bunny area with a magic carpet lift for real beginners. Oh, and a terrain park if you're into that sort of thing. I can't really comment on the terrain park because I'm not into that. I saw it, it's there, that's all I can tell you.

Snow was actually pretty good, especially considering how warm it was this winter. Evidently they can make their own blizzards at Cataloochee, but I missed that action. Apparently they made snow earlier in the day before I arrived. There was plenty of it - no bare spots (except that one closed section). It was a somewhat packed heavy powder consistency, some loose stuff to kick up but not deep. I found it very pleasant. It warmed up considerably on my second day and things got messy so I only used a couple of hours of my 4-hour ticket. (I noticed a lot of other folks were bailing out, too.) That's just a hazard of skiing in The South, especially later in the season. Timing is everything. Timing and luck.

I brought my own gear so I can't comment on the rental situation. I got a coin-operated locker for my shoes which was a simple matter of putting a bill in the change machine and dropping a few quarters in a slot.

The biggest downside to Cataloochee is the lodge. it's just not much of one. First, there's no real fireplace. You can't have a ski lodge without a big, stone fireplace. You just can't. Technically, Cataloochee's lodge does have a fireplace; it's one of those faux gas ones that looks like a screen saver which you'll have to look closely to find (it's tucked into the wall in the bar area). The main floor of the lodge is more of a cafeteria with a lunch line and a bunch of picnic tables in rows. It was packed. There's a nice little bar area at one end. I don't eat at ski resorts, so I can't tell you anything about the food or prices. Looked like mainly pre-made sandwiches and hot dogs. The bar had a decent dark beer and they made my wife a tasty Irish Coffee. Bar prices were pretty reasonable for a ski area.‬

‪We went the Sat of presidents day weekend knowing it would be busy and we were correct. I signed our 4 and 6 yr old up for ski school 2 weeks out and I was only able to get my youngest into the 4-6 yr old group as it was already full. I was able to get my 6 yr old in the 7-12 class as his skill level was higher and he was totally fine to be with older kids.

We got there around 7:45 (rental opens as 7:30) and waited 20 mins for boots but the wait to pick up skis was only 5 minutes which is in another building. By 8:30 when the slopes open the line for boot rental was out the door and remained that way till at least 10am so getting there early on busy days is a must.

The lift line for the beginner area was always long and I bet was up to a 45 min wait. We waited maybe 15-20 min for the upper lift at times. As busy as it was the upper advanced slopes weren't super crowded like the others. The 4 person lift line would have gone A LOT quicker if people actually paired up and 4 people rode the lift at a time but the workers didn't care at all that only 2 and sometimes even 1 person rode the lift and not 4 like it could hold. It got annoying watching how many empty seats remained unfilled as we waited in line.

The lift tickets did sell out so it was very crowded but we had low expectations and our kids had a good time even though I don't know how much actual instruction my 4 yr old got. It got to 50 degrees so super slushy and hot but can't expect too much for east coast skiing. Decent for what you get and bigger than Gatlinburg.‬

‪PLEASE READ-I am a big review reader and I want to detail our experience-Location great-views beautiful-Bought tickets in advance which I recommend-But once we arrived at the location not 1 single person who was employees here spoke to us willingly it was as though we were an annoyance by making them complete their job-we checked in via our qrcode at a window and then next went to collect our gear and was rudely spoken to and offered no additional directions-proceeded to get our boots(check in boot booth) and the girl was more consumed with her phone call vs helping us-next employee was consumed with her boyfriend did not in any way assist with tips for boots or offered any interaction-lastly to get our skis and the employee their was the definition of what not to do-we advised we were new to skiing and he provided our skis and literally walked away from his computer and offered no details about wearing skis and/or how/where to collect poles-We had to ask almost every step we had to go through-It was a costly experience with the worst customer service-I am a firm believer that if a person is an employee it is a direct reflection of the business/employer and this was a disheartening experience-We spent quiet a bit of money($$$) for this experience and I regret so badly that it was wasted at Cataloochee Ski-I would NEVER return to this location or recommend‬

‪Great little ski area. Instructors and staff and friendly and knowledgeable. Food is good and rental equipment seems of good quality. It was our first time on the slopes and everything was easy to navigate.‬

‪We went on MLK weekend. We chose to ski on Monday, hoping many people would already be heading home and the crowds would be better. We rented our equipment in town after reading horrible reviews about the lines for equipment. On Monday morning, we arrived 15 minutes before the ticket office opened (1 hour and 15mins before the mountain opened), and I was the first in line. I was able to book a lesson without issue. When the mountain opened at 8:30, hardly anyone was there. The lift line grew longer as the morning wore on, but was never very long. When we left at noon, the equipment rental line was really long. Getting there early is the way to go. If I had it to do over again, I would just rent my equipment there instead of in town. The equipment we got in town was poor quality and ill-adjusted, and we just had to live with it whereas we could have taken it in for adjustments if we had rented it on the mountain. ‬

‪First off it was very promising. Went on a Friday for night skiing. They had a bad storm so we couldn't get up the mountain. They kindly changed our tickets to the next weekend. The lady i talked to said it was fine for us to come Sunday morning. We drove 4 hrs only to be told that the tickets were only good for night skiing. Asked if there was a way we could pay the difference to go this morning. I was told " You came for night skiing before, so it shouldn't be a problem for you to drive home after you're done skiing." I explained that it was on a Friday and we rented a room. Told me to buy day tickets if i wanted to go. That would be almost another$ 100 each. So I would have lost $250 for the first ticks and another $300. I would have been glad to pay another $60 for the difference. So instead we left and drove another 4 hrs home. wasted gas, and a day to spend with my kids on the hill.‬

Thank you for taking the time to write a review! Your feedback is appreciated; we are always looking for ways to improve the Cataloochee guest experience. We do honor tickets purchased for a different date when a guest is unable to use them. The difference in price for a Friday night ticket and a 6 hour weekend ticket is $35 and payable at the ticket window. I will direct message you for more information on the circumstances. Hopefully we can resolve this misunderstanding.

‪I've noticed alot of bad reviews so I want to counter them with a 5star review! We had a GREAT FIRST experience at Cataloochee! We have a large family that varies from toddlers to adults. Every single thing went smoothly. Staff was so freaking kind and helpful. We went January 2023. We purchased our tickets and rentals online to skip lines...didn't take long at all to get our boots ,boards and lockers. We packed in our own snacks and drinks for the kiddos. We will definitely be back again next year!‬

‪CONS

The lines are painful. Could they have more than two people handing out ski rental equipment? Probably. The food line is also painful.

But nothing is as bad as the lift line for the easy run. There has to be a better way to get people off so it doesn't constantly stop. What to know how slow? There was a man walking up that mountain under the ski lift who got there faster than us on the lift. Honestly. We watched him the whole time. When people have to walk up the hill to get a decent experience, your system is broken.

Also, they need another area for beginners. One area is reserved for the very crowded ski school. The other is then very full. This then forces people to the green run which got unrealistically crowded with people falling and just standing in the middle of the run.

PROS

But, it was fun for what it was. My advice? Get the four hour lift ticket and get there as early as possible.

Four stars because the ski school was good‬

Thanks for taking the time to write a review, and the 4 stars, Laura! Also, thanks for the shout out to the ski school. As a southern ski area, the holiday season is a tricky time to accommodate all the families wanting to experience snow within their reach. We do our best to fulfill dreams and keep up with demand, but it's true, there are longer wait times during the holidays. Hope to see you again soon!
