Very disappointing and very misleading by staff who said that studios were open when they were Not. I was really looking forward to going there I've heard so much about it. nothing open we just walked around the garden for 15 minutes and then we left $35..which is ok if thats what you choose .misinformation all about $$$$$

Used to be free. Now they charge to enter. Cannot understand why. Gallery at entrance is free to view. Nothing bohemian about the place.

The lady that works there was starring at me to get her payment while I was taking photos on my wedding day, she could not even wait until I was finished like I was going to run away?
So I stopped my photo shoot and payed her and then she went off
She didn’t support us or even tour us on what we can do or where we can go she just left then I had to tell my photographer to go and get her all the way from her office
So after I took photos outside, we went inside to take photos then I saw a man playing the Piano in the main room where to take photos
And he didn’t have a bit of audacity to even look and see that there’s a bride and groom in front of him trying to take photos
So once the worker came back she was asking him to leave and he was being really really dry saying “ how long do they need is it 5 minutes or really 20 Minutes”
Are you kidding me ? I’m paying $500 a hour for someone to ask me how long I can take photos inside the venue?
As long you guys get paid no one cares ???
I don’t recommend this place to any bride and groom sorry

I visited the enchanting artists colony of Montsalvat for the first time in nearly 50 years! It's amazing structure, it's gardens, the geese and other birds make this an idyllic way to spend a day or two. The spirit of Justus Jorgensen the creator is ever present.

Entry fee is 16$. Nice place to visit the old building, art exhibit. Lot of car parking in front. A cafe inside, but lil expensive. You can walk around and explore the buildings. Loved the experience.

Montsalvat looks vaguely European but it s creation is the result of Australian ingenuity and selective recycling of historic buildings. Since Justus Jorgensen founded Montsalvat in 1934, it's been a hang-out for the bohemian set. These days, more than half the income that keeps Montsalvat going comes from hosting weddings in its grounds. Quite a change from being a bohemian artists' colony. The Covid virus has hit Montsalvat hard. The trip to Eltham was once a pleasant excursion, but recently the lack of maintenance and officious manner of the staff has been disappointing.

I have visited Montsalvat many times over the years and never once been told you cannot take a DSLR camera in there as a keen but very amateur photographer. It was a joke visiting an attraction that is asking for donations due to being affected by Covid and then coming across ridiculous and very precious restrictions.
Montsalvat was overgrown and neglected in parts and removing ridiculous restrictions would actually encourage people to visit which might contribute to some garden maintenance money.
The discrimination did not extend to mobile phones.
Their website does have conditions for commercial photography but does not say you cannot bring a DSLR in for personal use.
Service in the restaurant was non existent.
My advice would be to go somewhere else.
There are plenty of places around that are friendly and welcoming back guests but not here.

Could only give 1 stars for my experience today at Montsalvat.It looks abandoned and not welcoming at all. The beautiful piano in the main entrance covered over with a tarp, a few overpriced trinkets for sale and some interesting pieces of art on the floor and then to be told that we can't take photos unless I pay $165 per hour made it a long wait for our 2pm booking in the restaurant. The website reference's to photography and filming target the pro or wedding photographer primarily, not anyone carrying a camera (iphone allowed)and no pricing advertised. Gardens overgrown and not at all inviting. Their website asks for support due to Covid and we were willing with an entrance fee and lunch in the cafe but not $165 an hour. The cafe was understaffed with little to no service. Tables not wiped over , no cutlery or serviettes , water but no glasses and 6 or 8 menu items of mediocre quality for the price whilst taking a long time to get to the table. Not to mention forgotten drinks. I have been quite a few times in the past but this time left me cold.

Rip-off merchants. Years ago it was sufficient to pay the entry fee, then walk around and even take a few photos. This time I appeared with a child who wanted me to take a photograph to send to friends and interstate relatives for Christmas, as we do every year at other locations. Mont Salvat receptionist declared that because we were proposing to take a photograph using something more than an iPhone, we should be charged extra, and was disappointed when declined her invitation to speak with a Mont Salvat business manager.

Montsalvat in the 1970s and 80s used to be great. Free to go in. Buildings all filled with artists making and selling their work.you could stay in rooms around the pool. And sit and enjoy a drink there.plenty of art displayed in great hall. Now seems to be a wedding venue and access to pool not allowed

To the best of my knowledge, the main "baronial hall" had several buffalo roasting size fireplaces which obviously were used. Apart from that, no, I did not see any other heating.
