FYI, for perspective: I have not been on this ferry in a Long while.
Went both ways to and from Port aux Basques. Got a 4 bunk room. It was very skinny and small (only one of us could pass at at time) but it did the job. And, I was surprised that there was a tv.
No wifi. Slept very well. Pillows and comforters were comfy - Room is worth it if you are driving the next morning and planning to sleep IMO. As we spent the whole time in the room we cannot comment on the food or whatnot but I can say that it Looks like a cruise ship on the passenger floor now even the staircase . . . not like the olden days where it looked more like a fancied up crew level. Wow! What a difference!

I booked a reserved seat, for both to and from Port aux Basques. I had an ocean view seat on the way to Newfoundland and a wall view seat on the way back-but no matter, I had a good book along. There are plenty of vantage points on the ship, for ocean views, regardless of seating, as well.
The restaurant was excellent and the servers, second to none. In addition, the terminal has a clean and comfortable cafeteria, which was very handy, as the line-up of vehicles begins two hours before loading. Security is excellent at Port aux Basques, so there was little chance of anyone breaking into my locked vehicle, while I was in the cafeteria.

Took the ferry from North Sydney to Port aux Basques and from Argentia to North Sydney on our return. To/from Port aux Basques is roughly 7 hours, to/from Argentia is roughly 16 hours. Best to have a cabin and do the overnight trip to/from Port aux Basques and definitely book a cabin for the Argentia trip. Cabins are small but comfortable and have private bathroom/shower and definitely better than spending the night sitting in a chair (no sleeping allowed on the floors or couches in any areas) - but you definitely MUST book early to get a cabin, as they go fast for most sailings, and you won't get one, at the last minute, when you board. Port aux Basques route cancels sometimes when weather is bad. Argentia route only runs June to Sept. We sailed the Argentia route in the worst weather I have ever seen on any ship, anywhere in the world (and I sailed many ships) and they still kept to schedule for leaving and arrival.

This was my first time traveling via Marine Atlantic. I found the Stewards/Stewardesses very helpful. I had a 2 person berth and it was clean, as well as quiet

Didn’t realize they might have cabins available at customer service if you were not able to book one before your trip.

We were on the wait list for a cabin and got a quad cabin with private bathroom equipped with a shower. It was super cozy. Crew was super friendly and helpful. Very efficient boarding process.

The room we had on the Blue Puttees ferry from Port Aux Basques was very very musty. Nose and throat irration was terrible from it, TV didn't work. The carpets need to be removed from these rooms
Ride to Argentina was fantastic, room was great but over priced for what you get, but it's the government so what can you expect.
The advertised WIFI is non existent and according to staff has never worked

Honestly it's hard to give a true review here because of all the covid restrictions. We didn't have a cabin so we had to take a seat and stay there for the duration of the trip. All the amenities(movies, bar, restaurant) were all closed. However the staff were very nice every step of the way and super friendly. The trip was also very smooth.

Due to Covid the ferry requires passengers to stay in their seat or cabin for the entire trip so we decided to get a cabin. There are no amenities open on the ferry at the moment. The cabin we got had two sets of bunk beds, a window, a tv, 2 pillows, 2 blankets, one plug, a desk, a stool, private bathroom - toilet, shower, sink, 2 towels, 2 face clothes and a couple of barf bags... I was told the four bed rooms have windows but the two bed it’s the luck of the draw. For the $5 more I’d pay it to have a window! They gave everyone a boxed lunch with a chicken sandwich, water and a piece of fruit. The ocean was calm and the trip went well but it’s a long day with lots of waiting.

My husband and I have been visiting Newfoundland for about 25 years. We drive from our home in PA to N Sydney NS and take the ferry to Port aux Basque. Our drive is 24 hours with stops for gas and switching drivers . The morning we arrive in NL we want to be rested so we book a cabin. You can get reserved seating much cheaper but the chairs, while they do recline, don't lift your legs so your legs are hanging like you're sitting in a chair. This is not good for older people. The cabins cost about as much as staying in a motel and the crossing is about 7-8 hrs. The room and bathroom are clean. You get a bunk type bed with a nice duvet, a TV, and a radio. There is a loud announcement to wake you in time to eat before disembarking. The bath is small but clean with a toilet, sink, and shower. Soap is provided. We wake up refreshed and ready for the day. I highly recommend getting a cabin but book early because they are in demand.

Hi, from Port aux Basques to Sydney, how far in advance do I need reservations for a vehicle? I'll be traveling in mid-September? Can I reserve just a few days in advance when I know the exact date I am traveling or should I reserve weeks ahead of time?

It depends on when you will be travelling. This summer with more people getting away, after years, rental cars are in very short/tight supply almost everywhere. Check on prices ahead of time and book a good price when you can - you can always cancel at a later date if plans change, but at least you'll have a vehicle waiting for you where you want (most car rental sites will let you cancel up to 1 day ahead of pick-up, for a full refund). I'd book early, then you have one less item to worry about.

For the Port Aux Basque - North Sydney Sailing it depends on if you are on the day or evening sailing. If you are on the evening sailing the restaurant will only be open for breakfast (I believe it opens at 6 and serves until just before docking). For the day sailing it's open for almost the entire sailing serving lunch/dinner (It might close for a short period between 2-4 I can't remember)
Do the highlander have wifi?
Hi there. Our vessels do not, but our terminals do offer complimentary wifi.

All rooms DO NOT HAVE view of water. There are interior rooms and external rooms. Not clear to me whether there is a choice or if just assigned. We crossed over and back, both times at night and had interior rooms both ways. Obviously didnt matter at night.
