We went in via Black River Road access point (the single lane road was fine with a few, rough spots to creep through. There were a couple cars in there as well as 4x4s) and did the Montgomery Creek side trail loop. A very good hike...not a smooth and flat by any means, but lots of up and downs, over rocks, crossing creeks. Lots of variety underfoot, and a very scenic walk with an ever changing landscape and some really nice look out points along the trail. Approx. a 10k loop and I didn't see a soul. A very good hike, with the option for much longer hikes there as well. Another reviewer suggested Algonquin as a much better option. Algonquin is great, but very well worn trails and can be very busy on trails and even in parking lots. This place is much more 'back woods' if you're looking for a more authentic, adventurous walk in the woods.

A great winter camping adventure as we made our way back into the park for an overnight in a hot tent. What a beautiful place!

Are we lucky, or what? To have this wildlands reserve is a wonderful thing. I first "found" this place when looking for new places to canoe, likely about 15 or 16 years ago. That day, I traversed maybe 6 or 7 rapids, and spent almost a whole day on the Black river without seeing another person or boat. Birds, fish, even a bear from a distance, but nary a person. Wow. This is a beautiful place. I come at least once a year for a kayak, a swim, a picnic, with or without friends in tow. My only single beef?? A few reckless, feckless, irresponsible boobs leave beer bottles, garbage, tissues, papers....c'mon you thoughtless idiots! This is a beautiful treasure. We all have a responsibility to keep it as preteen as we are able. Pick up after yourselves!

Come prepared and you will enjoy yourself!
Yes there will be bugs, swamps, potential for bear encounters and many other things that you should be prepared for when going out for a wilderness experience.
This place is beautiful if you're willing to prep properly and want to enjoy some untouched nature.
There's a couple different ways to get in but for the moment this park is unmanaged which means there are some designated camp sites but no officials who regularly manage it and free of cost because of that. I believe this might change in the near future and the ministry will turn it into a managed park which means more visitors and entrance fees.
In the southern end of the park you can enter by portage through Head lake which will lead into the Head river, this will require a canoe and some portaging over land so be prepared. This route will bring you to Fishog lake and from there you can portage in a couple different directions or just camp on the few spots along the shore but be aware long weekends this lake gets busy and these spots can fill up quick it's first come first server since there's no fees. (You can pay the motel along Monck rd for parking and across the street launch your canoe or there's free parking and a little launch alone suter dr)
On the eastern side of the park you can enter through the Devil's lake access which has a nice size parking lot with no fees. This route is mainly for Hiking in unless you decide to paddle across Devil's lake. If you hike in the trail is well marked, be prepared to cross beaver dams and potentially get wet.
Many people go hunting in the Northern end of the park so be cautious if you decide to hike along the Victoria Falls section.
In the winter or the summer this place is beautiful.
Personally I love this park and anyone looking for a real wilderness experience will too. Be safe if you canoe Head lake it gets really rough when the wind picks up and people have had their canoe flip on this lake.

the road to get in is very rugged filled with potholes and gravel, expect your car to take a beating. it's nothing majestic, literally a wild land with nothing, swamps with mosquito, black flies etc. if you want just dark sky there are better places with less bugs, if you want better view points go up north for half an hour and head to algonquin. if you want seclusion you can have south of it in the middle of nowhere.

We drove up to Sebright from Orillia and turned left and drove to the bridge over the Black River. You turn right here and the park starts right there. There are signs telling you that you are entering the park and that there is no camping from that point onward. The road is very narrow in sots and very rough in spots. It is open from 8 am to 10 pm. The road today was a bit flooded in areas, but usually is not. It is 13 kms from the start into Victoria falls which a very pretty spot to stop and see the falls and enjoy nature. There are no facilities, but a great place to take a picnic. You can also come up the Cooper Falls road along the Black River road from Washago. We do this tip about every 4 or 5 years because my husband grew up in the general area. About 10 kms in, there is an area called Rugged Rapids, but it is a mile approx in from the road and there is no signage so the average person would not know it was there. Right at this area there is also a road off to the left that years ago went to Lewisham which does not really exist any more but is unpassable especially since it is so wet this year and also due to beaver flooding.

Beautiful, Secluded, Gorgeous Views. I met my friends and hiked in at night from devil's lake to Sheldon lake and woke up to a gorgeous view! Fall colors were amazing! Trails super challenging. This was my first backcountry on thanksgiving weekend and it was cold -2. Super awesome! Can I also mention that the privy box was clean! Amazing compared to Bon Echo and Bruce Peninsula car camping, backcountry is definitely the way to go. Pack for the weather and you'll have a great time! My boyfriend caught some fish too!

Not worth your time. Nothing interesting. No scenic views, mostly just mosquito-filled swamp land. No facilities, nothing interesting. Lots of bears too, our food got eaten at night. Do not even try driving down Devil's Lake Road if you dont have a pickup truck, it is filled with potholes. I don't understand the good reviews, its absolutely not worth your time coming here. Drive another hour north to Algonquin, you'll thank me for it.

This park is tucked away North of Toronto. It can be tricky to even find the entrance.
Pros:
- very secluded. There are no bathrooms or service stations. If you are looking for seclusion away from the crowds, this is your park.
- the park can be challenging and rudimentary. You can choose your own adventure
- lots of nature to see. From frogs in a stagnant lake to birds to different topography. All without the nuisance of big crowds
- did I mention, no crowds!!!!!
Cons:
- it is very secluded with no service. If you are use to "glam"ping, this is not a park for you. If you are looking for rugged, back to basics hiking and camping, this will be awesome.
- lots of bugs. Bring lots of bug spray. There are a ton of stagnant lakes which breeds a ton of bugs!

We parked the car at the Devil's Lake canoe landing out in the East, and went on the Ganaraska Trail that took us into the park. The trail is not particularly challenging, and is clearly marked by white labels on trees or on the ground. If you find yourself deep in shrubbery you know you're off track. One great thing about this park is that even though it's just 2 hrs away from Toronto, we met just 4 other people on the trail through 3 hours of hiking. It is truly an untouched, pristine wilderness that deserves a visit. However, the bugs are indeed brutal during summer time, so either load up with bug repellant or wait till the fall to pay this park a visit.

How rugged the trail is from Devil's lake to Sheldons? Is it possible to slowly ride or maybe walk a bicycle to a campsite?

I searched Google Maps and I can't find a motel on Monck Rd. Can someone help clarify? Is it one of the Trailer Parks or is there a motel? What's the address of the pay to park on Head Lake?

Was there a limit for parking? Can I get a ticket if I park there for too long?

Hi Em! Just a questio, how do U book a space for camping? I can't find it at Canada parks... thanks on advance.

The sites are first come first served. This is an Ontario park but there are no staff for camping. You should try the Ganaraska Trail Association, Wilderness Section group for information.

Anyone hike from Devil's Lake to Victoria Bridge or vice versa? Do you take two cars and park on either side or is there an outfitter or friendly cottager that will give you a ride to the other side?
