We found the Farmers Bank completely by accident, and I am so glad we did! Even though the site does not officially open for the season until May, director Arnold Smith kindly opened it for us and gave us a personal tour. He was so gracious with his time and so very, very knowledgeable about the Acadian community on PEI. The site has a very interesting museum display about Father Belcourt and the community bank -- really the first credit union in North America. They also have a reconstructed Acadian home from the 1700s. Stop into the church nearby too -- the wood lath ceilings are beautiful and there is a little historical display about the first Roman Catholic cardinal from PEI.

Un endroit peu connue mais qui vaut la peine de visiter et de reserver pour un repas acadien. La maison Doucet qui date du 18e siècle est l’endroit ou le repas est servi et ou l’on nous explique les coutumes des acadiens à l’époque.

Located in the area near Cavendish and Green Gables, The Farmers' Bank of Rustico Museum and Doucet House are a must see for anyone interested in the history of Prince Edward Island. The Farmers' Bank is a small gem of a museum filled with the story of early banking among the Acadians. The museum contains geneological records for early settlers of the area, and the staff was helpful in accessing those records. For our family, though, the dinner at the Doucet House was the highlight of our visit. The house has been authentically and lovingly restored, and serves as the setting for the Acadian Dinner that we enjoyed. Arnold, the director of the museum, is a treasure trove of history and joyfully shares his knowledge of the region. My 10 year old granddaughter loved making butter and churning ice cream. This was a high point in our visit to PEI!

I really enjoyed visiting this place has lots of history made me feel like home. It's a little remote so make sure to fill up on gas before heading out.

the property was still closed for the season but we had an opportunity to visit with a local guide. The history of the area and the local village and people was very interesting and well worth the time. Plan to visit the museum next time you are on the Island.

Learned so much about a servent to the Acadien people. Had little idea of the impact this small bank/credit union had on the Acadien people of PEI and to a larger population

We visited museum and Doucet House Farmers Bank in Rustico as part of a Caravan tour and found it very interesting . Also visited the adjacent St. Augustine Catholic Church. Would recommend a visit.

It was interesting to explore the Farmer's Bank which essentially created its own currency so the local farmers could transact business and get loans. The museum also enables the viewers to actually print sample currency (not negotiable, however). It also explains how and why the bank came into existence. Well worth taking the brief time to explore this most interesting aspect of PEI history.

This incredible building is a heritage site for a good reason but I won't spoil it for you. All you need to know is that the history behind it is fascinating and incredible. Some of the local Acadians also come at times to play the accordion and fiddle for you. A must if you're a history buff!

We recently enjoyed our visit to the Farmers' Bank of Rustico Museum and the Doucet House. The staff was very pleasant and informative telling us about the first people's bank in Canada which operated from 1864 to 1894 and provided cheap credit and small loans to the predominately Acadian farming community. There are interesting displays and the staff also explained the hardships experienced by the Acadians at that time. Also on the site is the Doucet House, the most historic building on PEI and the oldest house in the Rustico area and probably the whole province. It is a great example of Acadian construction techniques. This is a beautiful spot and well worth a visit.
