The colors were amazing, and it was just after day of the dead ceremonies. Hard walking through as there is no pathway… and stay away from the restrooms. They are not good.

We just walked through this cemetery last night on our way home from St Remy's restaurant. It is old and has trees and lots of flowers around the grave yard and plots. This year due to the pandemic the cemetery will not have the traditional day of the dead festivities. It has been canceled by the Governor of Jalisco.

This is what cemeteries used to be like, at least culturally, about 100 years ago in the states--A place where families would gather to celebrate their predecessors. The week before dio de los muertos, families will picnic amongst the graves, and celebrate. Really a "must visit" place in Ajijic!

This is an authentic Mexican Pantheon with elaborately decorated tombs and gravesites, expecially before and during Day of the Dead, Nov 1 and 2. On the first there were musicians playing precolumbian and more modern Mexican music, complete with the mournful strains of conches. When we discussed getting a shovel to shovel back dirt that had fallen into the gravesite we were clearing and decorating, a young man came with a shovel and worked for 1/2 hour in the hot sun, digging out the fallen earth and stones, then asked if there was more he could do. I said no and when I tried to pay him, he refused payment. Someone later told me the boys in his class at school had all come as volunteers to help people out. People strolled by and talked. All around us, families were arranging elaborate huge vases of flowers, coming by with warge pots full of food for family members. On the 2nd, Mariachis and smaller groups walked by playing music and gathered at gravesites where families gathered. For the past few years, I have decorated graves that no longer have family members to care for them--in particular one that turned out to be three Americans, the last of whom was buried in 1970. Since then I have discovered a bit of the histories. When I said I was going to make a marigold cross on the small grave next to the plot I've adopted, someone said no, that a young Mexican girl who had been looking at "my" graves when I arrived and who had asked me their history, had said she was going to decorate this nearby neglected grave. It is a wonderful experience observing the dedication of family members to their departed ones and I feel privileged to be a part of it for these last few years.

Note the entrance murals by local artist Javier Zaragosa. He has Chapala history mural in nearby town and several murals in and around Ajijic

To visit the cemetery during Day of the Dead observances is an awesome amazing absolutely extraordinary experience! The music, the food, the people, the specially designed and decorated shrines by families for their lived ones who have passed away. Just amazing! It's sad but at the same time it's a wonderful celebration of love that goes beyond the grave.
This is a MUST SEE!!

A peaceful cemetery full of personalized grave sites honoring loved ones. By the recent additions of flowers, ornaments and mementos, it is obvious the departed are still in the hearts and minds of those left behind. Very touching.

Though I am not a Catholic, I love the peace and beauty of the pantheon, including the Misa or Mass. On Dia de los Muertes (Day of the Dead), Sept. 2, memories of the beloved departed, brought forth and celebrated all night are amazing. The entire grounds are softly lit with many candles. Every grave site is surrounded with flowers, food, family members and friends. There is all night feasting. Possibly the only foreigners there, we felt privileged and popping with food as courtesy required that we dine wherever we were invited. So many village friends made us warmly included and quite teary eyed.

Growing up in Chicago I had three different cemeteries surrounding my house. I played inside of these cemeteries by myself and with friends and was fascinated by the history of the sides and those buried in the grounds. Going to places like New Orleans and seeing the above ground burial plots and the celebration of life passed within these places always peeked my imagination. Going to a Mexican cemetery in Ajijic made me realize even more why I love Mexico, it’s culture, and people. They celebrate life and death equally and respect those that have long passed preserving the memories and the spirit of those who came before them!

This cemetery is within walking distance of Hotel Danza Del Sol. If you are from the US, as I am, it will be an interesting contrast in cultures. I am used to cemeteries being neatly trimmed and sterile. This cemetery, with its bright colors and decorations, gives demonstration of the ongoing devotion and love of families for their loved ones. There is much artwork in Ajijic, and the cemetery is no exception.
